This property is inexpensive but not well maintained. There was a lot of junk outside the area as you are driving in. Driving into the property is an experience as the driveway is not maintained and has many potholes. The kitchen floor was sandy and the rugs were very dirty upon arrival. The picnic table for the property was positioned with a view of the propane tank at the back of the house and not anywhere near the lake. I asked if there was a grill available and the owner brought a grill that was filthy that I would not consider touching, let alone grilling on. There were very few cooking pans and bowls if you plan to do your own cooking. The bedroom light needed longer chains on the light and fan so you could turn of the light (and leave the fan on) without a chair or by jumping to reach the chain. As others have mentioned in prior reviews, the water does have a strong odor and the noise from tenants in the lower unit is very noticeable. We happened to have a fairly quiet group below us so it wasn't too bad but it is good to know about it before booking. The owner seemed to be offering me a very good deal on the cost of cabin when I let them know I needed to stay longer because of a family tragedy. When it came to paying for my additional days, they charged me their full price rather than the discounted price they had agreed on in an email. This property is in a beautiful setting and on a great lake and the upper apartment is very spacious but the property in general really does need some attention.
We enjoyed our view, the fishing, the cabin, the swimming...the only negative about being in the Upper was the bachelor party going on below us. If it weren't for that, it would've been a perfect get-away!
My wife and I were looking for a relatively quiet place where we could relax, rest, and enjoy lots of reading with minimal distractions. This certainly fit the bill. The view alone brought much enjoyment.
The upper part of the cabin was more than adequate in terms of space for sleeping, reading/relaxing, and cooking/eating. It is 2-3 notches above a "rustic" categorization.
We found this to be a good, central location for making fun day trips. We were able to travel to Fargo (only a two hour drive), enjoy the Taste of Dorset festival on the first Sunday in August, and spend significant time in Itasca State Park (the headwaters of the Mississippi River). We also took some nice walks/hikes on nearby trails.
A couple of slight negatives: 1) The noise of activities from the next door campground was noticeable in the late mornings and early evenings ... but not that big of deal. 2) The noise from those who came and went in the lower section of the cabin was also noticeable ... but again, to be expected. It's all part of being in proximity to other human beings!
Suggestions for improvement: 1) Do something about the smell/taste of the water. We are fairly used to well water situations/realities, but this is close to being unacceptable. It seems like some sort of filtration/treatment option(s) could improve things. We were glad to have purchased several gallons of bottled water for drinking, making coffee, etc. 2) Attend a bit more closely to maintenance details. Less clutter around the shed area, a coat of stain/paint for the upper deck, sweeping the roof/side of the cabin to remove spider webs and pine needles, and upgrading a piece or two of furniture are relatively "little things" that could contribute to an even more restful/peaceful environment. 3) Meet briefly (in person) with those who are on an extended stay. A brief appearance/conversation with the owner (or manager) would have allowed us to ask some specific questions and helped us feel a bit more comfortable.
Overall, we were quite pleased with our experience and grateful for a beautiful setting that enhanced our time of personal rest/renewal.
Very relaxing and quiet, just what I needed.
Beautiful view of lake!
The Heartland Trail is 10 minutes away for cycling, roller blading, walking. It goes from Park Rapids to Walker and is all paved.Check out the headwaters of the Mississippi, just 45 minutes away at Itasca State Park.
