Overview

About the property

Beautifully Renovated old Country Retreat Home with lots of character and charm

This charming and renovated country retreat home has been in our family for over 50 years. It was built on the coast to coast highway over 150 years ago. The house is a two story with numerous additions that have been added over the years. There is a summer kitchen which is now the laundry room. There are lots of cabinets in this room and serves as a storage room for numerous cleaning and household items.

There is an old windmill near the entrance to the house that used to carry water from the well to the animals. Out in the front is the old red barn, typical of so many older farms. A small distance from it is a loafing shed where animals could seek shelter from the weather. Beyond that is an old ice house, where people stored their ice before electricity and refrigeration were available. A small building behind the house was used for smoking meats, but has since been used for a tool shed or potting shed. An old chicken house has been renovated and made into a storage area. There is also a machine shed where smaller farm equipment is stored.

You enter the house through a breezeway that connects the main house with the summer kitchen. Through that area is the main kitchen. It has an stainless electric smooth top range, refrigerator with ice maker, dishwasher, microwave and other small appliances. The countertops are granite and have two heights for short to tall kitchen workers. There is also a table for four inside the kitchen and a small deck that leads to the yard.

The kitchen has lots of dishes, glasses, silverware and cooking utensils. Also provided are also kitchen towels, pot holders, dishcloths, dish soap, dishwasher detergent and paper towels.

A small charcoal grill is provided for your grilling pleasure (charcoal not included). It is lots of fun to eat in the screened in sunroom and look out at the old buildings and flowers.

The next room is the dining room which has a table with six chairs. You can see the sunroom through the french doors. The sunroom has seating for eight people, and you can look over the gardens through this area. This area is surrounded by a fenced yard where you can let smaller children play without having to watch them so carefully. There is an old rope swing in the yard that kids and 'kids at heart' can enjoy.

From the dining room, you can enter into the living room which has a couch and two chairs plus a gas fireplace. It also a seat in the bay window. If you wish to sit on the wrap around porch, you can go out the living room door.

You can enter the Library/Den through the Dining Room where you will find a queen sleeper sofa, a recliner, an oversized chair and an old refurbished trunk. There are many shelves with some books, puzzle and games, but they are begging for more books to be added. These will be added over time. The television is also in this room, and it has a dvd player and dish service is also provided. Below the television is a chest that houses all the bedding for the sofa. A door from this room will also lead to the wrap around porch on the opposite side, where you can relax on one of the rattan chairs or swing in the old-fashioned swing.

Through the den is a bedroom with a queen size bed. There are double bifold doors to privatize the bedroom from the den.

The bathroom is somewhat centrally located in the downstairs. It has a full tub/shower with a round shower curtain and rounded tub sides. The vanity is also rounded and has a vessel sink. Towels and washcloths are provided for your stay. This room was recently remodeled.

Up the stairs through the dining room and off the den, you will find a large bedroom on one side with another queen size bed. It has a door that leads out to a small porch where you can view the surrounding bluffs and crops during the planting season.

Across the hall is a smaller bedroom with a double bed. Off the bedroom is a half bath with a toilet and vanity.

Even though the property is rural, it does have city water.

All the beds have a bottom sheet, top sheet, pillows and cases, and at least one cover provided. Extra blankets are available if needed.

This house is along Hwy. 106, but you enter from a gravel road which is a short distance from the highway. This provides for more privacy and less traffic.

We hope you will find time to enjoy the country air while relaxing in our country retreat home.

Quiet in the country

  • 5 of 5

Sun Valley is exactly as billed -- a nicely renovated farmhouse with many interesting out-buildings and a screened-in porch to-die-for, surrounded by corn and soybean? fields and stately old trees full of birds. It's a pleasant two-mile round-trip walk to the small, very small, village of Kinderhook and a 15- minute drive to historic Hannibal. Throw in the low rental rate and an owner who is more than accommodating and you can't beat it.

Very Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We had a very pleasant stay at the farm house. The house is clean and the grounds are beautiful. It is a very out-of-the-way location yet very easy to get to, and only about 20 minutes from Hannibal and everything to do there. A great option for a Hannibal trip or just a relaxing stay in the country. We would definitely stay there again.

Thankful

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place for our family to spend Thanksgiving weekend. Extended family traveled to visit our daughter at Quincy University and this was the perfect place to be able to call our home base for the long weekend. Our dogs loved the surrounding countryside. The house is immaculate and has a great country charm to it. It is very spacious with its three rooms, two sitting rooms and two dining areas. Plenty of kitchen space and utensils/dishes to cook a home-style Thanksgiving meal for our crew. We would definitely do this again and recommend it to anyone wanting a quiet, secluded spot to relax.
