About Carolyn Cardwell
Steve and I moved to France to live full time in January 2013. We had lived in Kingston, south west London for over 30 years and had our holiday home at Lacanau ocean for ten years before finally taking the plunge to move here permanently. Needless to say we have not regretted it and love the peace, the space around us, the clear bright sparkling air, the climate, the lovely people, the fascinating culture and history, the reverence for wine and respect for good healthy food, the sense of community and rhythm of life, the seasonal round of special events, i could go on and on!
Carolyn Cardwell purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why Carolyn Cardwell chose Montpeyroux
We chose this spot because we found a house which had the open spacious feel around it, the wide open country all round. We also specially wanted to be between Bordeaux and Bergerac because the two airports give such easy access with such affordable rates to fly to and from the UK.
What makes this Cottage unique
The seclusion and privacy, away from it all! The space and open natural country views all around you, The easy access, two airports to choose from and good road and transport links. Walks and cycling straight from the house, Surrounded by prestigious wine lands of Bordeaux, St Emilion, Bergerac. Walking, cycling or gentle country tours by car Walk or ride to our nearby leisure lakes with bar restaurants open in season. Great climate with sunshine (not absolutely guaranteed of course) Big pool pretty much to yourselves Adults only No multiple rental units

Great property, fabulous host.
Our only regret about Gite Eleanor is that we only stayed for a week. The property itself is extremely comfortable, has everything and more you could ever need, and Carolyn is the perfect host. Her recommendations on places to eat at and to visit were perfect. Very quiet with easy access to interesting places in the Dordogne.
Thank you Carolyn for a wonderful week.
And thank YOU for coming! You came for a quiet restful week but you buzzed about all over the place, your feet never touched the ground! You were great fun to have here and we loved meeting you. Of course we really really hope you will come again one day and thankyou for the brilliant review. Have a good time for the rest of your epic trip!
Beautiful Rural Gem
Gite Eleanor is in a lovely setting with a historical village.
Carolyn and Steve were great hosts. Lots of recommendations on places to visit and good quality restaurants all within a easy drive. Gite Eleanor felt like home from home which is the most well equipped Gite we have ever visited. The outside space available to us was amazing with a large pool a great shady chill out area and a beautiful setting. South facing dining area looking out over the fields with the sun into the late evening. Dining whilst watching the sunset and sunrise was a treat.
Gite Eleanor, Carolyn and Steve will definitely be seeing us again.
Perfect place to relax
Everything perfect ! The gite well equipped with great attention to detail to ensure optimal comfort for guests. Outside sitting areas and peaceful location made it ideal for relaxing.
Carolyn and Steve we found to be the perfect hosts, they really do deserve the highest rating ! We hope to return before too long !
Relaxing in comfort
A lovely gite with all the amenities, including a large swimming pool, in the quiet of the countryside. The owners, Carolyn and Steve were always available but never intrusive. Recommended!
A comfortable, well equipped rental. Carolyn and Steve are lovely people, warmly welcoming and extremely helpful.
Fantastic gite in a wonderful rural setting.
Right from the moment we booked , we were provided with the most comprehensive information we have ever received from a rental property.
Carolyn and Steve were most welcoming and were always available when you wanted them and not when you didn't !! Although the gite attaches to their own property , we went for 3 days without seeing them at all !!
The gite is beautifully finished and all the basic essentials are provided. We recommend a trip to a chateau vineyard and once again , Steve organised this for us before we arrived. After the trip , a visit to St Emilion is a must - beautiful hill town with lovely restaurants and many tastings available
Also provided in the gite was a wine rack of various local wines with descriptions and you can chose what takes your fancy and leave the money.
Swimming pool is also lovely and you have sole use when required.
Lots of good local restaurants nearby and big supermarkets not too far away.
We did a trip to Bordeaux one day and went by train from a local station (about €30 for a return trip for both of us) BIG TIP - when you arrive in Bordeaux catch the tram to the centre €1.70 each , otherwise it's a long walk through not the best of surroundings!
To sum up , fantastic hosts , beautiful gite , lovely surroundings and so much to do and see or just relax and totally unwind.
We hope to go back and you can't get a better recommendation than that !
Thank you Carolyn and Steve - you're the best !
We are set in the beautiful countryside on the Dordogne Gironde border, in the heart of the region of France which lives and breathes wine production. We are perfectly placed for the "Route de Vin" with vineyards and Chateaux all around, two even within walking distance. Bordeaux, St Emillion and Bergerac vineyards are all within easy reach mostly on quiet traffic free routes. We moved here seeking a place in the countryside where we could feel open space around us and that is what you will find when you come here! You will find us in the quieter end of the Dordogne where you will not fight with crowds of tourists but take a deep breath, calm down and completely relax. Our beautiful corner of south west France is steeped in history too from the 100 years war enactment at nearby Castillon de Bataille to the fact that the World War Two demarcation line crosses our road. We have a medieval chateaux in our village of Montpeyroux with its ancient church. We are fifteen minutes drive from Ste Foy La Grande an ancient town on the Dordogne river whose market was voted the people's favorite in France, a true locals market but with so much to explore and discover.... maybe to bring home some wonderful samples of special local cuisine to sample. Sixteen miles quiet and idyllic drive through the vines you will find the stunning unesco world heritage site of St Emilion with its medieval walls, monolithic church built into the stone, bell tower and the Kings castle keep. Visited by wine lovers from all over the world. Here you can immerse yourself in all things vignoble, visiting vineyards producing premier grande cru classe, visit and tour underground cellars, even take a train tour around the vineyards. St Emilion also hosts a fantastic summer Jazz festival as well as other special open doors events all year round.
Our spot is so tranquil and off the beaten track yet you can easily strike out in any direction to explore pristine countryside, bastide towns and villages, larger historic cities such as Bordeaux, Bergerac and Periguex are an hour or less away, in fact you can drive to Velines, a little village 8 miles away, to take one of France's famously punctual train services, for instance, into the heart of Bordeaux which is a wonderful vibrant city to visit. Bordeaux also has a very easy to use (and cheap) park and ride service.
Closer to hand a perfect walk straight from the house would be to the Lac de Gurson, well, two lakes, one with two lake side bar restaurants, sandy beach, children's playground and little boats to hire. The other is just for fishing (if you would like to fish then permits are easily obtained locally).
Not forgetting the fact that there are so many restaurants to choose from ranging from set priced "menu de jour" which include up to four courses, often wine and coffee included, to grand Michelin starred establishments.
If you are a golfer this is a brilliant chance to play the newly established St Emillionais golf course nine miles away. It is a parklands course wonderfully set amongst the vines of St Emilion. Steve plays there and loves the course, he can even introduce you and play with you if you like!
You will find that many local events take place all year round in our region. For instance, a highlight of summer evenings would be a visit to a "marche nocturne" an evening market where tables are set out, often in the market place, local producers cook and you can shop around and buy your evening meal from different stalls. Great fun to chose from dishes such as local oysters, moules frites, faux filet, confit de canard, crepes, glaces, fresh bread and, of course, local wine producers offering you to taste, buy and drink. Maybe you may find you are here for a local "Fete Cantonale" where the town will be decorated with brightly colored flowers strung up across the streets and festivity including marching bands, carnival floats, stalls selling everything from food to crafts, bric a brac, artisans wood carving, glass engraving and pottery. The fete activities start in the morning continuing through until music, dancing and fireworks after dark.
Eleanor gite is adults only and we have a pool on site which you are invited to use any time you like.
This is the area where there is just so much to explore and enjoy or, if you prefer, do nothing at all!
