We have been coming up north since my grandparents bought a home on a small lake near here 70 years ago. Some of my own fondest memories are of watching the stars, taking walks, kayaking the Crystal River, swimming, finding Petosky stones, skiing, eating ice cream and hiking the dunes. I hope that you and your family enjoy all that northern Michigan has to offer.
As a University of Michigan faculty member, active in children's health, I am also deeply committed to raising healthy and resilient children and supporting families. I bring this passion to both my work and my leisure.
I know how precious vacation time is with your family and friends. Savor the moment, these are truly some of life’s most special memories. Take pictures, take a walk, take moment to enjoy the breathtaking view from the deck and to just 'be” with your family and friends.

Gorgeous bluff view and Lake Michigan frontage as well as public access to Lake Leelanau. Home well suited to needs of large family with many private spaces; and outdoor buildings for art work or children's play spaces. This home also features art and furniture of local craftsmen. This location provides your family with many options for hiking, exploring wineries, biking, water sports, great food and breathtaking natural beauty.
The house was beautiful and had an amazing view, perfect for sitting on the deck relaxing. However, if you have kids, that's not always what they want to do. The picture of the two chairs on the beach is NOT from the house, it is from the beach in town. The lake level was high this year, and there was no beach at the house. We had to put our chairs in the water. Also, having kids that wanted to explore, you have limited sight lines to sit and watch them. The amount of Petoskey stones was endless, and we had a lot of fun finding them.
The house does not have air, which made it unbearable a couple of nights, bringing a fan is a must because not all rooms had them. Having the windows open was nice for the natural breeze, but expect some little pesky bugs to find their way in.
Not sure if the description of the house changed yet, but we were told we had access to the lake across the street. Our group brought our own kayaks, brought them to the lake the first night, let the kids take a quick paddle, then were told that because of liability issues we couldn't use the kayaks or the lake across the street. Huge bummer, kayaking was something all of us were looking forward to.
Overall, our trip to Leland was five stars, we took advantage of everything this town/area had; shopping, wine tasting, sight seeing. This review is only on the house. I would not recommend this place if you have kids.
This is our second year of returning to Sugarbush Lane or as the kids call it " The Micigan House" The layout of the house is perfect for our 3 generations family. The kitchen is open to all three family spaces. The upstairs loft area is great for the kids to have their space.. The bedrooms are roomy. Air conditioning would be a plus. There are 4 bathrooms. The large mud room is a plus as well. The laundry room is quite ample. But this year the biggest plus was the private beach that is only 90 steps away and allowed for several sunset swims. A plus to that would be a fire pit on the beach
We loved this property and all the area has to offer. Great location and I would give it a 5 star rating!
This house was perfect for our trip up north. The location on the bluff was amazing, with the beautiful lake view and sunsets available from nearly every room and stairs down to the beach. Although the lake is high this year, and there wasn't enough beach space to lay out towels or build sand castles, there was more than enough sandy beach to play in the water and find petosky stones (we found many!). We used the beach here every single day, playing in the waves and using the stand up paddle boards that we brought with us. The 100 stairs were not a problem for our group. I was a bit worried about that, as we had a toddler and other small children with us, but the landscaping and path to the stairs made it so that our children never got close to the stairs without supervision.
The location on Leelanau is also wonderful. We went into Leland several times for shopping and dinner, and also drove to the dunes, Traverse City, local wineries, and Suttons Bay. Everything was very close. A nice surprise was the Clay Cliffs natural area right down the road. We are runners, and every morning members of our group enjoyed running out the front door straight to this beautiful trail run.
The house is nicely decorated and very comfortable. We had three couples and four small children, and the layout of the house was ideal; each family had their own group of rooms and personal bathroom. The kitchen was nicely stocked and there was plenty of living space and dining space for our group of 10. It was a relaxing home to come back to each day after exploring Leelanau. I definitely recommend this house, and will consider renting it again if we come back to this area!
This is a beautiful home with a great floor plan for a larger group to spread out. Landscaping around the secluded house is charming and the high bluff view of Lake Michigan is framed with trees. It was all clean and well maintained. The beds were very comfortable. The only drawback for us was that the 95 steep steps to the lake made it difficult for our family with 6 young children plus an infant to go down there. The VRBO photo actually shows only half the steps. But since Lake Michigan is up this year there was little beach frontage and we mostly drove to nearby beaches. The area has lots to do - we biked and hiked and canoed. The area towns are full of quaint shops and restaurants. We had a great vacation here.
We came with our extended family and had a wonderful time over the Christmas holidays. The home has so many lovely and artistic touches; and has great spaces for family togetherness and board games as well as quiet reading nooks and crannies. The views are breathtaking and the home is sparkling and the beds are super comfortable. The stargazing from the master suite is great!
The wineries are terrific in Leelanau and the opportunities for cross country skiing as well as snow shoeing are so beautiful . Can't wait to return for biking and swimming in the summer. Jackie was on top of everything
Breathe. Relax. You are now Up North.
Enjoy the beauty of the Leelanau Peninsula all four seasons with stunning views over Lake Michigan. In summer, travel by bike through lush cherry orchards and vineyards; walk the beach, swim and fish. In winter, cross-country ski and enjoy family time by the fire as you enjoy the early sunset over the lake.
Our home sits on a bluff above Lake Michigan, with stairs leading to a sandy beach. Its wooded lot provides plenty of privacy. The property is also within short walking distance to shared frontage on North Lake Leelanau.
An airy 5BR/4BA retreat, our home can easily accommodate a family or a group. It features three fireplaces, maple wood floors, large bay windows, a back deck overlooking the lake, and finishes and furniture featuring local craftsmen. The kitchen has granite counter tops, custom cherry cabinets, and a gas range. The master suite contains its own fireplace, library and a lake view. Lovely details include ash beams and paneling, and several skylights. The rooms provide some quiet spaces for those wishing to read or for business needs.
In addition to the main house, the property has a large detached garage.
We hope that you and your family enjoy all that northern Michigan has to offer. It is truly a special place! In an effort to give back to this wonderful community, yearly, we plan to donate 5% of all rental dollars to help support its farmlands and dunes, and Michigan families with medical and mental health issues. Your choice in renting this home will provide monetary support to the Leelanau Conservancy, and to high risk children and families served by the University of Michigan in outreach programs throughout the state. Thank you for selecting this home to both provide you with a wonderful vacation and to bring back to the communities of northern Michigan.
