To help offset some of the new VRBO fees, we lowered our nightly rates!
The Red Barn Retreat is located 7 miles from downtown Durango and 20 miles from Durango-La Plata County Airport. It sits at 7,333 feet on 35 acres of a 200 acre conservation easement offering amazing La Plata Mountain views, abundant wildlife and almost complete seclusion. Built in 2012, the Red Barn features rustic reclaimed barn wood and rusted metal roof to give a genuine barn feel just without the hay and cow pies! You can gaze for hours at Silver Mountain from the second story deck, the chair lift swing or the new stone fire pit*. Or lounge in a hammock in the Oak Room, a shady private oasis under a gambel oak grove located just to the east of the driveway.
Inside, the three level living space features charming shabby sheik decor. There is a bedroom with a queen bed, a fun loft accessed via ladder with a double bed and a bunk bed downstairs. The open concept kitchen includes a large refrigerator/freezer, dish washer, oven and cook top, microwave, coffee maker and seating for six. Living room adjoins the kitchen offering big views of the mountains and a wood burning stove the keeps you toasty warm in the winter. Bathroom has a tub and shower. There is Wifi to stay connected to the world and no TV to stay connected with each other! Lots of games and books when you're not spending time outdoors. Washer and dryer downstairs. No air conditioning.
*When visiting in the winter, we recommend that you have good snow tires and front wheel or four wheel drive (true for any Colorado winter driving!). The Red Barn is located just 1/4 mi off highway 160 but there is a bit of an incline at the beginning of the road which, when covered with snow could be tricky in a rear wheel drive vehicle. The road will be plowed whenever it snows.
**The tap water was tested in 2016 and is safe to drink but has a slight sulfur smell. We have plans to install a $15-20K treatment system in early 2017. The smell should dissipate a little after running the water for 30-60 seconds. A reverse osmosis filter system for drinking water is available in the kitchen.
Durango has much to offer including four nearby ski areas:
- Hesperus Ski Area (5.8 mi, small but fun)
- Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort (34 mi, excellent winter skiing and tons of fun summer activities too)
- Wolf Creek Ski Area (90 mi)
- Telluride Ski Resort (102 mi)
Durango is also famous for our Durango & Siverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (7 mi) and many bike races such as the annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic in May where bicyclists race the train from Durango to Silverton, a total of 47 miles and an altitude increase of 6,700 feet! There are also several themed train rides such as the Blues Train, Wine and Rails, Brew Train, Cowboy Poet Train and the very popular, very magical Polar Express train ride to the North Pole and back!
Between the Animas River, Haviland Lake, Vallecito Lake, Lemon Reservoir and the much anticipated opening of Lake Nighthorse there are plenty of rafting, paddling, tubing and fishing opportunities. Not to mention the hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails. Plus, Mesa Verde National Park (29 mi) offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years.
Music and theater lovers will enjoy a continuous supply of live entertainment at the Animas City Theatre, Henry Strater Theatre, Music in the Mountains and everywhere in between! Golfers can enjoy some of Durango's best views from any one of our three golf courses (Hillcrest 9.8 mi, Dalton Ranch 16 mi and Glacier Club Private Course 25 mi). We have world-class artists in Southwest Colorado and their best work is on display right here. Restaurants range from simple to absolutely gourmet. And if you have a college bound kid, don't forget to visit Durango's four year college, Fort Lewis University (8.8 mi).
For our over 21 guests, Durango has six micro breweries: Animas Brewing Company, Brew-Pub & Kitchen, Carver Brewing Co, Durango Brewing Company, Steamworks Brewing Company and Ska Brewing Co - all serve food and children are welcome. We also have a distillery (Durango Craft Spirits), a winery (Four Leaves Winery) and many recreational marijuana dispensaries.
If breathtaking views and solitude with easy access to an almost limitless supply of Colorado goodness is what you are looking for, look no further. Great for families. The Red Barn Retreat is a hidden gem you don't want to miss!

After almost two years of searching, Eleanor, her daughter, Diane and husband Anthony bought the Red Barn Retreat in June of 2016. "We just couldn't get over the view...The plan is to build a home together, raise a few chickens, garden and soak in the landscape" They should break ground in the early spring of 2017. "It will be so nice to live on site because we will be able to provide so many more personal touches" And thanks to a large gamble oak between the Red Barn Retreat and the new build site, the two buildings will be hidden from each other.
Eleanor and Diane are from Chicago originally and Anthony is a Durango native. Diane and Anthony met in college and, together, found their way back to Durango in 2009. Eleanor currently lives outside Nashville but has visited Durango several times and is looking forward to building her dream home. "It is such a lovely place and we love sharing it with the people that stay with us."
Diane Zahorodny purchased this cabin in 2016
You are so close to town (10 min highway drive to town - no stop lights!) and yet feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. There are daily wildlife sightings of hawks, eagles, owls, turkeys, coyotes, deer and elk (surprisingly no bears or mountain lions).
You can sit around large fire pit in the 20 acre 'back yard' and roast marshmallows or relax on the second story deck sipping any one of the many local libations. The loft is a favorite among older kids, teens and adventurous adults. At night, enjoy the wood burning stove and more stars than you can count.
Except for the stinky (sulphorus) tap water, all was good, heaters worked well, beds all comfortable, nice kitchen, etc. great views and not difficult at all to get into even in the snow (though access road in did ice up under the snow)
with good parking. Plenty of good wood for fire and stove worked well.
The Red Barn does not disappoint! It is small but it was exactly what my family and I were looking for in our Pre-Christmas vacation. Secluded but yet close enough to enjoy everything Durango has to offer, nothing like taking the early morning drive to the Durango Dinner, we highly recommend this place if you find yourself vacationing in the area. Many rentals do not post pictures of the surroundings, only to find yourself disappointed with nearby neighbors. Well..... NOT THIS PLACE!! You will find yourself turning off the main road onto dirt/gravel road winding up to the barn, perfect. The kids enjoyed the open area the barn has to offer to run and play, following tracks left behind in the snow from wildlife. Everything is included in the red barn including fire wood for the beautiful room heater located in the living area. We found the BBQ pit to come in handy despite the cold weather. The Red Barn also includes many fun family games including a massive Jenga set that can be found downstairs in the garage. Our only complaint was the sulfur smell in the water, the renters note on the refrigerator states to run the water for a few minutes and the smell will disappear. Well this was not the case, the smell remained throughout our stay and it was found to be a bit excessive at times, the kids had a hard time adjusting to this. Owner advised they will be implementing a new water treatment system sometime this year, looking forward to it. We highly recommend the Red Barn if you are looking to get away and relax with the family, we will be returning for sure.
Loved how close it was to Durango – but you felt completely isolated, which is what we wanted. The fire pit was amazing. The house was amazing. The only downsides were the water smell and there was no hairdryer. But that's pretty minor. I know you are trying to mitigate the water situation- and getting a hairdryer would be pretty easy! Thank you so much! We'll be back!
Close to Durango yet secluded. Saw lots of wildlife and had an amazing view. Will definitely come back when I'm in the area again.
We had a very comfortable stay at the Red Barn Retreat. We were greeted by a nice sign that said "Welcome Slow Food USA" (our nonprofit), as well as views of deer, wild turkeys, and birds out the back door in the morning. Location was quiet and peaceful, the space was clean and well kept. They are working through some water issues (perfectly safe to drink and bathe in, but sulfurous smell). Owner provided great customer service, especially when my VRBO app wasn't working properly - very easy check in process!
We spent three nights here at the Red Barn Retreat outside of Durango and had a lovely time! I was traveling with my sister and all our kids for COUSIN CAMP 2016 (together we have 5 children ages 11 and under)! We pretty much maxed out the occupancy - and needed special permission to do so - but as long as you are ok sharing one bathroom - it worked fine! The view out the back was stunning. We delighted in spying a family of wild turkey each day, a creeping fox one afternoon and a beautiful buck one morning. We stayed here to do two big activities in the Durango area: Mesa Verde and the Narrow gauge Silverton Train. This place is a little bit to the west of Durango - about 10 minutes into town, and only about a solid half hour to the entrance of Mesa Verde. It fit our needs perfectly. We slept well, cooked in the kitchen easily, and had a great time all together. Many thanks to our wonderful hosts, we'd stay again in a heartbeat!
