Fred was born and raised in Croatia, Cheryl, in Iowa. They met at a university in S. California, where they both graduated with degrees in violin performance. Later Fred chose dentistry and graduated with his DDS.
Cheryl received her Master's Degree in violin performance from University of S. Calif in Los Angeles, and went on to perform and teach for 35 years. After practicing dentistry in Guam for 8 years and teaching on the faculty at his alma mater for 15 years, Fred (& Cheryl) chose to retire in the Black Hills of South Dakota, because of their wish to live in a quieter and more rural environment. They have never been disappointed with their decision, even though many of their family and friends wondered why they would ever want to 'move to South Dakota!!' As the years have passed, their family now understand why they were attracted to the Black Hills!! Fred and Cheryl designed a home with a vacation rental apartment, where they can host people from all over the world! They look forward to having you stay with them. They enjoy making their guests feel at home during their visit and they hope you will enjoy the Black Hills as much as they do!!
Fred & Cheryl purchased this apartment in 2014
We chose this area for it beauty and tranquility, and yet its close proximity to small city life and to endless beautiful sights and scenic places to visit, which are still quite unspoiled from commercialism. It's a known fact that 'The Black Hills are the best kept secret in the Nation!'
This lovely apartment is the entire downstairs of our new home, same floor plan, built in 2014. Mt. Rushmore is 20 min. from your door (Visible from our deck!) --- close enough for convenience, and yet far enough to avoid the tourism rush. At this quiet location, you would never know that there are over 3 million visitors that visit Mt. Rushmore each year!! There are great restaurants throughout the Black Hills, and of course, plenty of good shopping and never-ending sights to visit. We are centrally located - less than an hour to most popular attractions in the Black Hills.
We had a great time & truly enjoyed our stay. Cheryl & Fred have such special touches and went above. It was so nice to be home away from home!
The guest lodging was spacious and exquisitely appointed. The private drive and entrance was a welcome perk and the patio set and grill made it seem like home. We were sad to say goodbye to such wonderful and welcoming people, we would rent from them again in a heartbeat!!
We couldn't have asked for a more perfect place to stay for our family of five. Centrally located to all the Black Hills attractions and reasonably priced. Extra bonus points for the friendly fox who stopped by while we grilled outside and the tame mama deer with her twin babies who stopped by while we enjoyed our breakfast! We will stay again next time we are in the area.
We had an amazing time. What a relaxing place to return too after sight seeing all day. You never know what you may find when renting a place sight unseen and we were very pleased. The apartment is so clean and well kept, even the pillows and towels were awesome! We spent a lot of time sitting at the patio. My teenage children enjoyed the wildlife, we saw birds, squirrels, a deer family and our favorite the young fox. It was so quiet and peaceful you could hear the wind blow. Fred & Cheryl are very friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend staying with them. Thanks again! Brad, Kim, Kayla & Jacob from Lee's Summit, MO
Our stay was absolutely wonderful from the warm welcome including warm fresh baked bread, sparkling grape juice and chocolates and the immaculate furnishings. Cheryl and Fred were the best host and hostess we have ever had. We enjoyed visiting and talking with them. The property is so close to everything we wanted to visit including Mont Rushmore, the Badlands, and Rushmore Cave. We especially enjoyed the back patio and grill area. We will definitely be back to stay hopefully longer next time.
We had a wonderful stay! The location is ideal for exploring the Black Hills area. Cheryl personally welcomed us and provided us with some special treats. The place is immaculate, spacious, and worked perfectly for our family of five. The property is beautiful and we enjoyed the company of a Red-Tailed Fox right outside! We wish we could have stayed longer.
Mt. Rushmore is sure to be one of the highlights of your Black Hills vacation. The monument is open year-around; the summer months feature a spectacular lighting ceremony nightly.
Crazy Horse monument is another famous monument dedicated to the rich Native American history that exists in this area.
If hiking is your passion, you'll want to hike Harney Peak, which is the highest mountain, traveling east, between the Rocky Mountains and the Swiss Alps!
Museums are numerous.
There are also many caves in the Hills which attract visitors from far and wide.
The famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (first week of August) draws thousands of bikers from all over the world.
Whatever your particular interests, there is something to satisfy every member of your party, whether it's hiking, boating, golfing, hunting, kayaking, swimming, caving, bicycling, rock climbing --- you may find it all in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Perhaps you would prefer just a quiet retreat from your hectic life. No problem! We're happy to say, the Black Hills enjoys a smaller population which allows visitors plenty of room to enjoy the sights and venues without overcrowding. One can usually find accommodations, even at the last minute (with maybe the exception of Sturgis Rally).
There are too numerous sights to mention each one, but when you arrive, we will supply you with plenty of information to help you plan your holiday in the Hills!
