We had a lovely stay at this home. It's in a great location, but we most enjoyed the grandiose porch and fabulous view!

Nice. Beautiful view.

  • 4 of 5

Old nice home. Nice people. Great view. Just a few minor things so all would feel a little more comfy-Maybe fix the lower level bathroom door so it closes properly! Not much for privacy. We had to use garbage can to keep it somewhat closed. The 2 lower level bedrooms have no wall between them just louver doors. This may be to keep with the history of the house but if you are not comfortable with the people you are staying with then that will be a problem. You hear everything. Could use some paint & touch ups along with a good clean but otherwise nice time. Its a rental so If you like the view then its great. Thank you!!!

Perfect location on the water

  • 4 of 5

We had 6 adults here for a birthday weekend. The house was older but nice and cozy. The downstairs was not air conditioned but the 2 (and a half?) bedrooms upstairs had window air conditioners. The breeze off the water was perfect for sleeping - for me, at least, my husband was a bit hot. There are 2 connecting bedrooms downstairs. Everyone said they slept good! The 2 bathrooms (one upstairs and one downstairs) were decent size and clean. The time we spent at the house was mostly spent on the front porch enjoying the water views from the gliders. Yes, there are bugs as other reviews mentioned. I live in the country so this didn't really bother me so much but I could see how others would be bothered. You are on the lake and have open windows and doors. The only complaint abt the house was that the coffee maker wasn't cleaned out from the previous renters. I just cleaned it before we used it (and before we left). The refrigerator wasn't either. Wasn't sure if we were to throw the stuff out or leave it so we left it. Other than that everything was fine.

Great location - very close to downtown - def within walking distance to the shops and restaurants and ferry's/boat ramps of downtown. We rented a golf cart and rode around the island. Very pretty sunset from the pier over by the Glacier Grooves and beach area. The quarry had the bluest water, Caribbean almost.

Headed to Put-In-Bay for a day. Easy trip there and back.

The wings and pizza at the Caddyshack were good. Ice-cream from the trailer across from Bag The Moon was really good too.

Initially had some email issues trying to connect with Amanda but finally got squared away. She was very accommodating and pleasant. Would definitely recommend staying here and I'd stay here again.

The map on Homeaway had the house down by the Brewery but it's not marked in the right location (or the Brewery isn't marked right). It's barely a quarter mile from downtown and the Jet Express ramp.

The Old Nest is a great old house. We absolutely loved staying there! It was perfect for our needs!

  • 4 of 5

We have been coming to Kelleys Island for about 20 years. We've stayed in Marblehead and on the island. The Old Nest is THE BEST PLACE we have stayed. We loved it so much that we booked next year's trip BEFORE we left! We even have a friend who owns a place there, and we like The Old Nest better. We loved the old family feeling you get when you walk in, the photos and original charm of the place are terrific. It's so spacious and comfortable, the ten of us never felt crowded. The owners are great to work with, and the fact that there are so many amenities included, such as towels, paper products, cooking utensils, etc made our stay the best one in 20 years. It's close to downtown and a simple walk to everything. You need a cart to get to The West Bay and maybe The KI Winery (you could walk to the winery if you're a walker and the weather permits), but other than that everything else is close! The front porch and the huge sitting room inside make it easy for everyone to have fun while sitting around either inside or outside. One bedroom is small for two adults and the trundle bed needs some attention, but we made it work for us. We can't wait for our trip next year and especially our stay at The Old Nest. Thank you so much for sharing your old family home with all of us!

Old indeed - but comfortable and convenient

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 6 generally enjoyed our two-night stay at the Old Nest. PROS: The house has plenty of big rooms, and the owners provide nice sheets and towels (which was something we found many rentals on Kelleys Island did not). It even has a spacious laundry room off the kitchen. It could not be much closer to the restaurants in town, and it has a phenomenal view of the lake -- without even a dock obscuring your view from the porch. CONS: As many reviewers have said, the place is FULL of spiderwebs. I don't understand it -- every corner, ceiling fan, window frame, doorway, etc. had them, and they were full of (dead) bugs. It's odd because the house is otherwise very clean -- floors and rugs were clean, kitchen, countertops, all dresser and shelf surfaces were clean. Bathrooms were spotless -- except for the webs. The other odd thing about this rental is that I had no communication about check-in besides the appointed hour (4 pm), and I had no phone number to contact the owner. When we arrived at the house, there was no obvious driveway, and we didn't know to drive on the grass (eventually we just did, as we saw other homeowners on the island do this). The doors to the house were unlocked, the radio was on, and the beds were made, but no one was there. It was a little creepy. After a few minutes of calling out and walking around, we assumed it was OK for us to settle in, but a welcome note -- via email or in the house -- would have been helpful to confirm. And an understanding that we should not ever expect to lock our belongings in the house during our stay would have been good to know too. Overall, we enjoyed our 2 nights, but we would look for another place to rent next time.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write your thoughts about the Old Nest. For future informative purposes, please see the following: 1. Doors purposely left open to welcome arriving guests 2. Radio left on as a welcoming calming effect 3. You are on the water. Bugs exist. Must talk to God about that 4. The Old Nest is for those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship of bygone era 5. I am always available via email if vrbo does not give my phone

The Old Nest is in a perfect location. It is centrally located and an easy walk to everything in and around town. It has a beautiful view of the lake and a great front porch. The breeze off the lake and the home's high ceilings keep the first floor cool. Upstairs there are window AC units. Big, beautiful trees keep the front yard shaded if you don't want to be in direct sun. The backyard is huge and full sun. The house is beautiful and has so much character. It is an old home, so it could use a good cleaning. It is lakefront, so bugs do get in to the house. The positive aspects of the house far outshine those things. We try to spend a long weekend on the island every summer and in the past we have always tried to stay somewhere new. We will definitely be back to the Old Nest. The owner was very easy to work with prior to and after our stay. I would not hesitate to recommend the home to someone looking to stay on the island.
