About the property

Beautiful 3-Bdrm, 3-Bath home, infinity pool, spectacular views

Casa Vista Grande, a 3-bedroom, 3-bath home completed in April, 2014 sits high on a plateau just 6 minutes from downtown Atenas. We offer the most stunning and expansive views of the Central Valley including two mountain ranges and four volcanoes in the distance. From the coraline terrace, the infinity pool or the front bedrooms you can gaze out on Poas, Barva, Irazu and Turrialba, with the entire central Valley stretching out before you and San Jose nestled at the far end. You are surrounded by tropical gardens, frequented by colorful birds. At night you can enjoy the stars above and below, the sparkling lights of the Central Valley.

Situated in a private, gated area, the house is tastefully appointed with colorful tiles, beautiful native hardwoods, quality furniture and appliances. Broadband internet is provided with WiFi, and HD TV with Netflix on demand, and a land line phone for local calls. A prepaid cell phone is provided for your convenience with a fully refundable deposit.

Atenas is centrally located, just ten minutes from the Pan American Highway that runs North to the world-famous Monteverde nature preserve and Nicaragua, south to San Jose and Panama. The new Caldera Highway has an exit directly into downtown Atenas, putting you a convenient 30 minutes from Escazu—which features the huge Multiplaza mall and many first-class shops—and downtown San Jose. Looking west from the highway entrance, you are 30 miles (43 minutes) from the Pacific beaches. The house is 25 minutes from Juan Santamaria International Airport.

Nearby attractions include the El Toledo Coffee Tour, the Zoo in La Garita, the Botanical Orchid Garden in La Garita, Else Kienzler Botanical Garden in Sarchi and La Paz Waterfall Gardens Park on the slopes of Poas Volcano.

Comfortable day trips include Beaches: (Tarcoles, 50 minutes, 35 miles; Jaco Beaches - 45 miles, one hour and six minutes); Volcanoes & Parks: (Poas Volcano Nat'l Park - 22 miles, about an hour; Manuel Antonio National Park at Jaco; Arenal Volcano Nat'l Park - 50 miles, 2 ½ hours; La Paz Waterfall Gardens – 35 miles, 1 hour 11 minutes).

Your hostess Magda is very knowledgeable about the Atenas area and Costa Rica’s many attractions. She will happily offer information and services of every kind to make you feel completely at home. She will give you a guide to local restaurants that are sure to please any palate. The house is stocked with useful information including the latest guidebooks, maps, local directories and current books on native birds, animals and plants. You can take advantage of all the attractions, fun activities and tours Costa Rica has to offer: Beaches; rainforests; volcanoes; the wild, untamed Osa Peninsula; river rafting; surfing; zip line canopy tours; butterfly farms; coffee plantations, and more…or you can luxuriate in doing absolutely nothing, lounging under a coconut palm by the infinity pool, sipping a fresh tropical drink, taking in the beauty of Costa Rica while turning the pages of a favorite book. To help you unwind, a masseuse is available on request.

Enjoy the fresh air and breathtaking views while having your meals under the generous covered terrace which includes a gas BBQ grill, comfortable seating and dining for six. There are pool lounges for sunning and walking trails through the gardens. Make yourself at home in the great room and enjoy a movie or TV show on the high-definition TV via Netflix. High-speed internet is available with WiFi. There is formal dining for 6 and an island bar for breakfast or cocktails. Enjoy the fully equipped kitchen to prepare your own meals. A chef is available for custom meals on request.

The bedroom furniture is native hardwood, hand-carved by local craftsmen. All three bedrooms offer queen beds with Serta pillow top mattresses. There is an inflatable queen bed or twin bed available for more guests if necessary. Each bedroom has its own tastefully appointed bathroom with shower.

According to National Geographic magazine, Atenas has 'the best climate in the world.' The perpetual spring-like weather boasts daytime highs of 75-84 degrees F and night time lows of 65 F; in a word…perfect. The quaint central park is the heart of Atenas. The small town charm offers an open air feria (farmers market) every Friday morning as well as modern supermarkets, bakeries, hardware stores, drugstores, restaurants, internet café's, video stores, bicycle shops, chiropractors, dentists, lawyers, gift stores, beauty shops and more. You’ll fall in love with the warm and friendly people of Atenas.

Bus service between Atenas, San Jose and Alajuela is frequent, comfortable, safe and inexpensive. Taxis are also quite reasonable; the fare to Atenas central from the house is just $4 in the white taxis. We can offer the best deal on rental cars; our guests receive large discounts. We can also connect you with an exceptionally good tour guide who also does airport pickups.

Robert, the owner will provide you with a custom digital map to the house and directions in English and Spanish before your departure in Costa Rica.

The Costa Rican greeting, “Pura Vida” epitomizes the local philosophy. It means literally, “Pure Life,” referring to the shared experience living in a land where nature is beautiful, relaxing and unspoiled. Many locals also say “Pura Vida” instead of good bye. Wishing you a “beautiful day”. We invite you to come and stay with us for a delightful tropical vacation in paradise. It will be our pleasure to assist you in making your stay with us one of your best vacation choices ever.

Why Robert Cranson chose Atenas

Atenas is a very special place, and this location is even more special. The views are fantastic and the weather is great. The people of Atenas are warm and friendly.

What makes this house unique

The views are the best in Atenas! The house is very comfortable and designed with principals of ancient architecture to take maximum advantage of the sun. The flow of fresh air is maximized by the design of the great room, with louvered windows at the top. This allows for warm air to flow up and out of the house. The solar water heater provides plenty of hot water while minimizing use of energy. The infinity pool makes the water, earth and sky blend together.

The views are even better when you get there!

  • 5 of 5

Casa Vista Grande was all we needed for rest and relaxation. Driving up the side of the mountain to get to the house was fun. The mountain/valley views were beautiful. The pool was refreshing. Magda the property manager took care of all our extra needs and had lots of information to share when we needed it. Robert Cranson property owner e-mailed lots of information such as a map with directions to the house with all the details of how the house runs, also lots of information on the nearby downtown of Atenas. Lists of restaurants and fun things to do nearby in Cost Rica. My family really enjoyed our stay. Would like to go again and we will stay at Casa Vista Grande.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Lisa, for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Casa Vista Grande, and we look forward to hosting you and your family again, for your next Costa Rican vacation! Costa Rica offers so much to enjoy: beautiful beaches, amazing rain forests, river rafting, waterfalls, canopy tours, bird watching, butterfly farms, zoological gardens, lovely botanical gardens, volcanoes, sport fishing, working coffee farms to visit--that one could spend months here and still have plenty of places left to visit, adventures yet to take. And, there is also the joy of doing absolutely nothing, just relaxing by the pool under one of our palm trees, reading a good book or chatting with friends and family. Two larger swimming pools, a water slide, two jacuzzis and a tennis court also await you at the mini-resort next door. Magda and I enjoyed hosting you and we will be happy to offer more information on new and different places to visit, restaurants to sample, and adventures that everyone in your family can enjoy. We are happy to connect you with a private chef who can create a fabulous meal for a special occasion like a birthday, anniversary, or just a new taste adventure, Tico style! There is also a massage therapist on call to help everyone de-stress and relax completely. And don't forget the weekly feria (farmer's market) where you can find all the delicious, fresh tropical fruits, vegetables, coffee and other locally grown items for your dining pleasure. We hope to see you again soon!

Lovely home

  • 5 of 5

Lovely home perched on a hill with an amazing view of the lush jungle. Pictures on the website are very accurate. The owner was extremely helpful on every aspect especially about how to pick up a rental car. Before our trip we read all the nightmares associated with getting a rental car and all the insurance you must carry. Alamo was great, was not required to carry extra insurance. We highly recommend you rental something with 4 wheel drive because you will need it.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Barbara for your review. We much enjoyed hosting you and would be happy to do so again. "Lush jungle" isn't a description of the view that I've heard before, but that's OK. Most of the land that stretches out below the hills and into the distance is either farmland or residential, with the city of San Jose visible at the far end of the Central Valley. Surrounding this valley are the four volcanoes--Poas, Barva, Turrialba and Irazu--coming around from northwest to due east. And on the south side of the valley the Pacific Range frames your view. You are correct that the land is especially lush this time of year, during the "green season" when there is more rainfall than at other times. It was a pleasure to help you with your rental car. Rental companies in Costa Rica can be a little more casual and erratic about office hours and service than they are in the USA, so it is always good to scope things out a little in advance, and we are happy to help our guests do that, having the benefit of experience. Regarding 4 wheel drive: honestly, unless you're planning on going off the beaten paths, you really don't need it around Atenas or to get to Casa Vista Grande, or to any of the attractions we recommend to our guests. Let me explain this a little. All the roads in the town of Atenas and the routes between Atenas and the main destinations in Costa Rica are paved. There is no winter in Costa Rica as we know it in the USA, Canada and Europe. No snow or ice, only rain. To get from the house to the main public (paved) road that runs from the property into Atenas and beyond, you drive down a hill that is paved with cement, and once you are on level ground, there is about 400 meters of gravel/dirt road that connects to the public road. That 400 meters has some bumpy spots but nothing that would cause a typical 2-wheel drive car to get stuck or bottom out. I have been driving that strip of road for fifteen years, and I have never needed or used 4-wheel drive. Whenever I am in Atenas I rent a compact 2-wheel drive car and have never had a problem driving to and from the house or anywhere else in Costa Rica. That includes driving during heavy rainfall and on dry days as well. Of course I do not try to drive off the gravel roads and into the wilderness. If I were going to do that, I would indeed rent a 4X4 vehicle. I hope that clarifies the situation. Someday we hope to pave the gravel section, but in the meantime it is quite passable without stress.

Unbelievable place with awesome view

  • 5 of 5

This place was great. The booking experience and follow up by the owner was great. He even called and emailed with last minute info! The house was beautiful and spacious and well maintained. The infinity pool and views were nice, along with the bird and iguana watching. Also there are mango, coconut and lime trees right out in the yard.

A relaxing spot to lay back and relax

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed Atenas after having been in San Jose for 3 days because it was such a dramatic change from the craziness of the busy city. The town is very small, and the surrounding area mostly agricultural, but you can get to many of the tourist attractions within 90 minutes or less. The house is beautiful, comfortable and decently equipped, and the crown jewel of the place is Magda, the property manager-what a delight! She was on hand for any and all requests-helped make our 4 day stay wonderful.

Peaceful, amazing view

  • 4 of 5

The house is very comfortable, secluded on a hill top giving ways to beautiful views of San Jose, the mountains and volcanoes. The house is well equipped. We loved the seclusion, it is a great place to relax. Robert and Magda are always there to answer questions and see to our needs. Our only complaint is that the pool was too cold therefore we only went in a few times.
