The Loony Bin On Sweet Sand Pond!

Bedrooms 2
Space 850 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Two Bedroom, One Bath On A Clear, Clean Pond. Sunsets, Loons, and No Traffic!

This colorful, easy-living camp has two bedrooms and a free-flowing, open layout. Breakfast bar, dining area, and fantastic lounging space with wide-open water views. Cathedral ceilings, big kitchen, modern tiled bath. Front porch, back deck, five steps and you're on the dock! Hammock, picnic table, gas grill, fire pit, wild blueberries. Sandy bottomed pond makes for great swimming. Canoe and kayaks carry you onto the 61-acre pond, where bullfrogs, turtles and curious loons are more common than motor boats.

The immediate area offers a small public beach, and a walking trail around the pond. Close by are additional hiking trails, and the antique shops, restaurants and supermarket of Cornish, which is an antique village in its own right.

A short drive northeast is the summer playground of Sebago Lake. An hour or so northwest brings you to the White Mountains, with endless hiking trails to suit any taste. Over the New Hampshire border is the resort and outlet town of North Conway.

Portland, with its famous restaurants and watering holes, is about 45 minutes away.

About Hannah Holmes / John Dorvee

Hannah Holmes is a Maine native; her husband John Dorvee is an import from Vermont. We share a deep love of Nature, and of animals. We strive for a clean, low-impact lifestyle, especially here at the pond.

Why Hannah Holmes / John Dorvee chose Baldwin

We were thrilled to find a cottage this close to Portland, and yet so far away! The quiet lane, with just four camps on it, lured us in; when we heard the loons wailing, there was no turning back. It was a huge bonus that Hannah's aunt and uncle live nearby in Cornish. And that there were loons. And that it was that much closer to hikes in the White Mountains. And that there were loons.

What makes this cabin unique

More inclined to paddling than running an engine, we found that most of our neighbors share our preference. And as the pond is sparsely developed, the water remains clear and clean, hopping with frogs, fish and turtles. And loons!

The Loony Bin was the perfect location for our family

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is a little rustic, it was cozy, quiet and charming. It was a great place to relax, unplug and unwind. The owners were great to work with. This is a perfect place for a family of four or five. Our family enjoyed staying right next to the water. The location is not far from Sebago Lake which is an amazing place to watch the sunrise and Portland where you can enjoy shopping, great restaurants and a schooner ride. We also ventured over to the White Mountain National forest in NH through North Conway. This area was not far and a fun half day trip which included hiking and exploring. The cabin was only a short drive for groceries, cinema, restaurants, entertainment and ice cream shops. We recommend Sweeties for ice cream.

New England Rustic Charm

We were at the Loony Bin late October. Very quiet and comfortable. The cottage was well stocked and clean with comfortable furnishings. Kudos to the decorator....the floors and counter tops were remarkable. Very nicely done.

Nice relaxing getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at John and Hannah's house! We were there visiting Maine to go to the Fryeburg Fair, visit a friend, check out breweries and to spend a day in Portland. My only regret was not staying longer! We had such a nice relaxing time on the pond, the water is crystal clear and it was an added bonus sitting outside with our morning coffee. The house doesn't have wifi but we didn't have many issues there with cell service, however other parts in Maine we had issues with so beware AT&T subscribers. I would definitely recommend the house to anyone looking to get away for a bit, looking forward to booking our next vacation in the area next year!

We spent a fantastic week on Sand Pond. The house was very clean, well maintained and comfortable. It was very quiet and peaceful, while still being close to grocery stores and other amenities. The water was perfect- warm and clean with a soft sandy bottom- great for swimming. The owners were very responsive. Highly recommended!

Great stay! Highly recommend

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently returned from a week’s stay at the camp on Sand Pond. It's a peaceful and quiet location. The home is very comfortable, modern, well equipped and relaxing, with big windows overlooking the pond. We enjoyed spending as much time as possible sitting on the dock and front deck, swimming, canoeing, listening to the loons and watching the sunset perfectly across the pond from the camp. The fire pit, hammock and picnic table were added bonus features in the yard. Its location is close to Sebago Lake amenities for exploring and dining. The owners were easy to communicate with and were welcoming throughout the booking process.

Owner's Response: Thanks Amy, You know, for us it's easy to market the Loony Bin. All of what you said is just plain true! Lol. That's what we wanted when we built her. Hope to see you back. You guys were great and to any future property owners, they treated our property as if it were home. Highest recommendation. John

Between the foothills of the White Mountains and the summer playground of Sebago Lake, this region is rural, peaceful, and easy-going. We spend most of our time on the dock or paddling around the pond. When we do venture out, we love antiquing in picturesque Cornish, which also has good restaurants. (Krista's, and the Cornish Inn.) The Main Street Grill in Standish has a giant menu, and allows you to wander the giant, old farmhouse in search of the resident ghost. Throughout the area, farm stands pop up in season, and apple-picking begins in late summer. This is a prime place to unplug and unwind!
