This is a cute, fully furnished cabin that was built in 2004 and an addition of the same space that was in the original cabin was added on and completed in 2015. It now has 1,120 sq. ft. of living area. It is approximately 20 minutes from Hannibal, MO; Quincy, IL and Pittsfield, IL. Springfield, IL is about 90 minutes from here and St. Louis is about two hours. Any of these places can be reached by taking I-72. It is also very close to Barry, IL where you can purchase groceries, gas and enjoy small town restaurants, Wendy's or Subway.
The cabin has a galley kitchen with a full size range, refrigerator, microwave and plenty of cabinets. All of the general kitchenware is provided, i.e. plates, cups, glasses, silverware, pans, coffee pot, electric skillet, etc. We try to keep it stocked with dishwashing detergent, paper towels, dishclothes and dishtowels.
The dining room area offers a table with four chairs with casters, two comfortable chairs, television, VCR/DVD, and a radio.
The bathroom has a walk-in shower, toilet and vanity. Towels, washcloths, hand soap and toilet paper are normally provided.
Up the ladder from the living room is a loft with three twin size beds - two extra long and one regular length. Sheets, pillows and a blanket are provided.
There is a porch on the front of the cabin where you can sit and relax and enjoy the country air and scenery.
Just added is a larger living room with a recliner, twin day bed and sofa bed that makes into a queen sized bed. There is also a washer/dryer in the closet in this large room.
Upstairs from the living room is a bedroom with a queen sized bed that gives a beautiful view of the Pike County Valley below. You can see for several miles from the windows of this room. You will often see deer and turkey grazing in the fields.
You may also access the loft from this room, making it easier to monitor family on the other side. But if privacy is key, you may also lock the door between the two areas.
Down the trail, Hadley Creek flows through Sun Valley Farm from east to west. You may wish to fish for a variety of species. Kids and 'Kids at Heart' may go wading or make sandcastles along the bank.
Walk the trails to take a stroll through the woods along side Hadley Creek. If you are quiet and watchful, you will most likely see deer, rabbit, turkey, squirrel or other wildlife during your stay.
The adventurous and/or athletic may enjoy a hike to the top of our Pike County Mountain for a scenic view of the valley.
Sun Valley Farm has been a member of the American Tree Farm System since 2000 and is enrolled in the Illinois Acres for Wildlife Program which preserves and enhances Habitat for Wildlife. It has been family owned since 1962.
Nestled beside the cabin and up from the creek is a mowed area providing outdoor dining equipped with picnic tables, charcoal barbeque grill, fire ring and readily available firewood.
Guests enjoy watching the powerful Norfolk Southern Railroad as it pulls freight through the broad valley heading to far away destinations.
We look forward to seeing YOU soon and sharing our family farm with YOU!
Dan & Sarah Dolbeare
We have lived in this area all of our lives. We love the country living. Dan is a general contractor and also does logging. Sarah works at a local nursing home as a secretary.
Dan & Sarah Dolbeare purchased this cabin in 1999
It has been in the family for over 50 years. When my father died, my mother split up the farm and sold this part to us.
Creek, farmland, hunting, hiking, big hill
This cabin was a great retreat for my husband and I on our anniversary. The cabin is Very clean and has all the amenities if home. The beds are super comfortable and the trains didn't bother us one bit. Overall it is a great comfortable getaway and literally 15-20 minutes from Hannibal, Mo.
We had so much fun the week we spent there! Was really cool to walk in the creek! Spent a lot of time out by the fire. Rained a few days and we stayed in watching movies. Really close to Quincy and Hannibal!! We definitely want to return!! Kim A. And Kim P.
The cabin was clean and had an overall homey feel to it. The loft with the 3 twin beds was a bit of a tight fit, but probably works well when you are needing those extra beds. The air con worked great! There was wood available for the fire pit which was a nice end to our day! The extra lawn chairs also came in handy! Glad they had some games on hand also. The con that I can think of was the shower was dark. But plenty of towels and washcloths! I would def recommend this cabin and would LIKE to stay again! Thanks so much for making this available in such a rural area!!
Great cabin! Clean and had all basic amenities that are needed. Thanks!
My husband and I really enjoyed our time at Sun Valley Cabin. It was a wonderful escape from the city. We spent a lot of time outside - sitting on the porch swing, wading down the nearby creek and along it's banks, sitting in lawn chairs by the creek and watching great blue herons and egrets and kingfishers and listening to bullfrogs and cicadas and crickets. We were delighted to see fireflies as we hadn't seen many of them for several weeks in the city. We enjoyed roasting hot dogs in the fire pit and grilling hamburgers on the grill. The inside was very charming, especially the master bedroom. The only real downside was the train that woke us up several times, but I know the train was mentioned in the description so there is not much that can be done about that. Otherwise it was very quiet and peaceful with only an occasional car driving by and the city sounds replaced by birds and crickets. We did not want to leave...
Went with a couple of friends for our annual (ish) guy's weekend. Cabin was perfect for what we wanted - actually even better than in the pictures.
There were separate areas for each of us – the “master bedroom” area has a door which is a great place to put a snorer. The living room has a day bed which was a good bed and it was away from the loft (and another good place for putting a snorer). Kitchen had everything we needed and the charcoal grill was in better shape than mine is at home.
This is not a resort, it is a great little cabin in a field in rural IL. Verizon was worthless for data – worked for phone. AT&T and U.S. Cellular both worked better here. There are trains – you get used to them. Creek is shallow but wide and a good place to check out. This is a great spot if you are trying to get away from it all - I would recommend for my friends and family who were low maintenance and wanted to get away from town. Also good if you tend to play cards and loudly give each other trouble late into the night – you are not disturbing anyone.
We cooked in the cabin, so can’t speak to local restaurants. There is a decent golf course close-by in Barry IL. It was great to golf (other than the heat) and it was very reasonably priced. It was very hot (felt like approximately 150 degrees out) the weekend we stayed – air conditioners kept up and kept it nice and cool in the cabin. Everything we needed was there. Owners were responsive and great. We will be back if we can get all the schedules to match up.
Overall, great stay – Thanks for sharing your place!!
Hannibal, MO has lots of Mark Twain and Tom Sawyer attractions to visit. Mark Twain Riverboat is fun to take a cruise on the Mississippi River or enjoy a meal.
