Carissa Cottage is located on Up-Along street midway between the Post Office and the Hopetown Lodge. Built to resemble the original Loyalist cottages in the area, Carissa Cottage is only 20 years old. The Bahamian builders made sure that all of the original charms befitting the 1800 saltbox colonial style cottages were included in the plans. The cottage's focal point is the magnificent screened porch complete with it's Adirondack table and chairs, overlooking both the Hope Town Harbour and its famous lighthouse and views of the Atlantic Ocean. Begin your day with morning coffee on the porch watching the harbour and settlement come to life. In the evening you can enjoy a sunset dinner on the porch as the activity in the harbour settles down for the day. Nights are magical with lights twinkling from the settlement and the harbour and the light from the historic Hope Town lighthouse.
The beach, complete with coral reefs for snorkeling, is across the street and down a flight of steps. If a boat is in your vacation plans, the private dock is just below the cottage. Stroll through the settlement for convenient shopping, dining and nighttime entertainment. For a special occasion, stroll 2 minutes to the Hope Town Lodge to enjoy some of the finest dining on the island.
If cooking is your hearts desire, you will find the kitchen very well equipped for almost any of your needs along with a gas bbq located on the side yard for your grilling needs. The master bedroom has a king size bed with private bath; the downstairs bedroom has 2 twin beds (which can be put together for another king bed) with an adjoining bathroom.

Reinhold and I are originally from Bavaria in Germany but live since 25 years in Florida. Growing up in a cold climate we are both naturally drawn to nice beaches and tropical climates.
We enjoy boating and Watersports. The beaches in Hope Town are spectacular and the water is crystal clear.
Sabine Probst purchased this cottage in 2014
We started coming to the Abacos and Hope Town in 2008, where we've rented a boat with friends to explore all the islands. As soon as we entered the beautiful harbor in Hopetown we knew that we found our most favorite place. In 2009 we bought a Trawler that we keep in Marsh Harbor, since then we come back to Hopetown with our boat about 5-6 times a year and usually moor out in the harbor.
We knew at some point that we would love to own property in Hope Town.
When we saw that the Carissa cottage was up for sale in March 2014 we made an offer immediately, not only because it's the best location in town but it also has a dock big enough for our boat. We LOVE Carissa Cottage and everyone who comes says it's the best place to stay in Hope Town.
Our screened porch overlooks the harbour where we can watch the sun set each night and watch the come alive just as the darkness sets into the harbour. There just isn't anything better than this!
We can't say enough about how much we enjoyed Carissa Cottage. It truly made our vacation. We stayed for about two weeks. When planning the trip, we wondered if that might be too long, given the size of the town and island. But we had so much fun, we could have stayed another two weeks!
This was our first VRBO experience and everything was perfect (thank you, Nancy!). The house was exactly as described in the listing and as shown in the pictures. The two local managers (sisters) met us at our boat when we arrived and were super nice and helpful (everything went so smoothly we never needed them again).
We rented a 23' Albury Brothers from Island Marine for the entire time we were there. We flew to Marsh Harbor, a cab took us to the grocery and liquor stores, and then drove us to the harbor where someone from Island Marine was waiting for us in the boat we'd rented. A 15 minute boat ride and we were at the Cottage's dock. "Getting there" was a breeze.
Abaco is really a special place. Our daily routine -- listen to The Cruiser's Network on Channel 68 at 8:15 to get the weather and day's events, grab coffee at the GREAT coffee shop a few blocks away, and then jump on the boat for a day of adventure. We snorkeled, spearfished, fished, beachcombed, but mostly chased our 5 year old daughter around beautiful beaches we had all to ourselves. And, we didn't get in a car for two weeks!!
There are plenty of local restaurants that serve simple, fresh, and reasonably-priced fare. You can boat or walk to all of the best places. At night, they'll pick you up and drop you off at the Cottage.
I could go on and on. We're already planing our next trip to the Abaco and we'll definitely be staying at Carissa Cottage!
We had a wonderful trip to Hope Town and so thankful we stayed in Carissa's cottage! It was the perfect location, clean, adorable, and well stocked. This was our family's first trip to the Bahamas and Elbow Cay had come highly recommended. We went with VRBO because we have 2 teenagers and needed more space, so Carissa's cottage was perfect. The porched over looking the harbor was fabulous. Watching the settlement come to life in the morning as the sun was rising was a highlight. Having the beach across the little road behind the house was amazing too! We loved being able to walk to the stores and around town to see the happenings. Everyone was so friendly and it was very safe. The beds were comfortable, there were plenty of beach and bath towels, beach chairs, well stocked kitchen, and paper products. In the evenings we enjoyed walking on the beach, cooking dinner, watching dvd's (old schools for the kids:) and playing cards on the porch. During the day, we rented a boat which was conveniently parked at Carissa's dock in front of the house.
We rented our boat from Cats Paw, across the harbor next to the light house. They were great and very reasonable. They picked us up from the house and drove us over to give instructions and recommendations then off we went! We are inexperienced boaters, but felt very safe and had a ball! We had lunch a Nipper's on Guana(a must!), Cracker P's on Lubbers, and Firfly on Elbow. We enjoyed snorkeling, shelling, and exploring other Islands. Tahiti beach was beautiful!
Our favorite view was from the Hope Town Lighthouse and behind St.James Church which loops around right near the beach behind Carissa's cottage. We had lots of fun having drinks On Da Beach and wish we had more time to enjoy dinner another night too...next time! One must experience Vernon's key lime pie...chocolate was delicious too. Conch shells are easily found right across the way at Jonny's Cay.
We would highly recommend Carissa's Cottage. It could not have been a better experience. Thank you for all of your help Sabine, Maria, and Patty!!
Excellent stay! Best house on the island. Great view of the Hope Town Lighthouse. The cottage is charming and perfectly decorated. The owner and caretakers were absolutely wonderful. I will be back!
We couldn't have been more pleased with Carissa Cottage. The cottage was well maintained, clean, and in a perfect setting. We were in short walking distance for all shopping, beaches, and restaurants. The screened in porch was our favorite place overlooking the harbor. Our caretakers, Maria and Patty,
were helpful and accommodating. We would stay there again and not hesitate to recommend Carissa Cottage to anyone. Loved It!
The Carissa cottage in Hopetown Harbour is very well maintained and clean. The owner Sabine Probst went out of her way to make sure we were satisfied with our stay. There is no need to recommend the place since it's rented out most of the time... The USP of Carissa cottage is the completely screened in big porch facing the Harbour and the lighthouse. You take part of the harbour life without being bothered by mosquitoes. You can sit out protected even from bad weather (except strong northerly winds). From the upper floor you have a nice view of the ocean side with the coral reef. If you travel by boat you might hook up at the private dock (3 ft at MLT). Landlocked folks may walk the beaches, explore the island by bicycle or golf cart. The latter however is hard to find since they are mostly rented out on a longtime base. Never mind, bicycling is healthier... We look forward to our next stay at the Carissa cottage.
This is a beautiful home located in the center of Hopetown. Walking distance to everything you need. The home and the island provide one of the most relaxing settings I've ever visited. Renting a golf cart is a good idea if you want to ride to farther areas of the island. I am definitely going to return and will not hesitate to rent the Carissa Cottage again. Absolutely beautiful!
The cottage and caretakers are fantastic (& deserve 5+ stars)--everything we needed and more. Only caveat I would offer is for travelers to be aware that during off-season (August & September), the island is pretty much closed for business as are all the popular bars & grills on nearby islands. We should have known better, but we were caught by surprise. Don't be.
