Mark and Laura have a home in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles and several vacation rentals in Joshua Tree. Laura teaches yoga and is owner of a yoga studio - Glendale Yoga in Glendale, CA. After nearly 30 years in B2B sales Mark spends much of his time in Joshua Tree managing and improving the properties. We both grew up in Cincinnati, OH but have lived in California for 20 years. We love everything that California has to offer but are particularly enamored with the beautiful scenery and interesting community of Joshua Tree.
Owner / Manager purchased this house in 2011
We purchased this property because we both appreciate architecture and vintage furniture and décor. This house was quite a showplace in its day - Donovan used to stop by for coffee - and we have enjoyed restoring it to its original glory and filling it with period furnishing and decoration and wonderful art. There are 8' deep eaves around the entire house which keep it cooler and provide choices of shady seating areas for different times of the day. This house is a relaxing and comfortable trip back in time.
There are beautiful views through walls of glass in the kitchen and living room. The large open kitchen with room for a table with seating for 10 in front of a fireplace is perfect for large get togethers. All of the rooms are oversized - the sunken living room is nearly 900 sq. ft. alone - and there are multiple indoor and outdoor gathering spots so the house never really feels crowded. We love to relax on the patio off of the kitchen and master bedroom while listening to one of the thousands of records in the record collection and watching the stars in the beautiful desert sky!
My family and I very much enjoyed the house during our stay in Joshua Tree. It was such a lovely, cozy, fun-filled home for us to relax and enjoy each other. The kitchen is very well-stocked with anything/everything needed for our family to cook together. The vynyl collection is fantastic, as is the game collection. The beds are comfortable, as is the entire home. We particularly loved the mid-century modern eclecticism of the home! We'd recommend this property to anyone.
Overall, the property was great and the owner was very accommodating and helpful. The place was very big, had plenty of space, music/speakers, and everything you need to cook/bake. We had a great stay so thank you for hosting us!
Some close friends and I shared the weekend together at this wonderful house for the second time, and it was just as magical as we remembered. Mark has spared no expense to make this place a truly wonderful retreat. The house is full of all your cooking and entertaining essentials, from juicers and coffeemakers, to darts, board games and vintage records. There is so much to explore inside and outside the house, from the eccentric bedrooms to the outdoor hammocks and hot tub. You won't need to leave the nearly four-acre property to feel like you have really gotten away from it all. But if you do choose to leave, you are only a 10 minutes drive from the center of the Joshua Tree National Park and all of the breathtaking beauty that it has to offer. You're also a quick drive from all the essentials in town, from grocery stores (Stater Bros was our choice) to brunch spots (Crossroads Cafe is where it's at) to outdoor adventures (try Pappy & Harriett's in Pioneertown for a great night out with live music and a chill, desert-life atmosphere). Mark has worked tirelessly to make this place a one-of-a-kind gem.
Some tips before you arrive:
There are two bedrooms that offer privacy for couples, and one bed that is nestled into a nook in the living room. There are also a few other places that can serve as beds, including two daybeds in the living room and an enormously long couch. The house has almost every cooking appliance you could need, so don't worry about bringing anything to cook with -- they've got it all. Be sure to pick up some firewood on the way out (or donate a few bucks to Mark in the glass mason jar on the dining room table if you borrow his) as there are two fireplaces inside and one chiminea outside. Bring your own vinyl records or use the substantial (and excellent) collection at the house to add a vintage soundtrack to this magical place. There is another house on the property, so don't be confused if another car that isn't part of your group comes through the driveway. Finally, when coming or going on the property, be sure to close the gate behind you with the clicker, it doesn't close automatically!
This house is amazing. Decor is great and the house is clean and spacious. We were there to hike in the park and it being only 10 minutes away from the entrance was perfect. My friends had recommended this place to me and I would definitely tell anyone to stay here.
An AMAZING and comfortable house with the most unbelievable vintage record collection I've ever seen! Thank you! Hiking was great! Too bad no stars. Got a gorgeous full moon though! Perfect locatiom? Well stocked kitchen! Awesome!
Was pretty much the experience for our group. Mark is a solid guy with a hell of an aesthetic taste, and extremely responsive as well.
The site is a mid-century heaven from the tasteful art, huge collection of records, and to the connected placements of all the rooms that creates a natural flow.
Dirty haikus from the typewriter, beers on hammocks, and jacuzzi under the stars.
The property is located on a well-maintained dirt road in a relatively sparsely populated neighborhood just a half mile away from the village of Joshua Tree. Although just 2 hours drive from Los Angeles you will find Joshua Tree to be worlds away. Joshua Tree is a beautiful area that attracts artists and musicians and outdoor enthusiasts from around the world to make it their home. The community actively supports the arts and tourism and environmental issues. Visitors will find the locals to be an extremely interesting and friendly lot. The west entrance to the amazing 800,000 acre Joshua Tree National Park is just a couple miles away and the property features views of the mountains in the park. There are excellent running and hiking trails outside of the park just a short walk from the property.
