Overview

About the property

Lovely Apartment Adjacent To Taughannock Falls State Park and Cayuga Lake.

This cozy second floor apartment is next to Taughannock Falls State Park, which has the highest single drop waterfall in the Northeastern United States (33 feet higher than Niagara Falls). The location is perfect for outdoor activities including hiking the gorge trails and the newly completed Black Diamond Trail (which runs from Trumansburg to Ithaca along a former train route), biking, swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, boating, and fishing. Hiking the nature trails along the gorges, which are up to 400' high, provides dramatic views of the gorges formed by the ice age. Minutes from the Cayuga Wine Trail, which includes scenic wineries, distilleries, cideries and breweries. There are great restaurants nearby, many featuring free live music. Only ten miles to Ithaca and to Watkins Glen, across the road from beautiful Taughannock Stream that flows into the waterfall. You can hear the soothing sounds of the stream as you doze off to sleep. Peaceful surroundings and beautiful gardens. Saturday summertime lakefront outdoor concerts at Taughannock Park.

Newly renovated smaller second floor apartment in owner's country home, clean and comfortable, perfect for 1-2 people. The bedroom has a new queen size mattress, solid Amish-made oak dresser plus air conditioner. The cheerful sunroom/dining room has a cypress wood table and chairs (handmade by local Amish craftsmen) and looks out over the trees and expansive grounds. We call the apartment the Eagles Nest, since it sits above the magnolia trees and overlooks large silver maple and black walnut trees and several flower gardens. There's a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, oven and range, coffee maker, toaster and microwave. In addition there's a newly tiled bathroom, a den with two chairs and flat screen DirectTV with 63 channels and second air conditioner, a walk-in closet, and wireless internet connection. Linens, towels and soft cotton bedding and blankets are supplied, and several Metropolitan Museum of Art reproductions hang on the walls. Close to the quaint village of Trumansburg which offers boutique and art gallery shops, excellent restaurants, a large grocery store and liquor store, pharmacy, natural foods store and deli, bank, beautiful public library, new bowling alley and laundromat. The house was formerly owned by Robert Moog, who invented the synthesizer, and who invited many famous musicians to the home, i.e. the Beatles and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The house will be included in an upcoming documentary about the life of Bob Moog, scheduled to be released this year.

About Loretta Heimbuch

Retired graphic artist/teacher, originally from New Jersey and so grateful to now be living in the beauty of the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY.

Loretta Heimbuch purchased this apartment in 1977

Why Loretta Heimbuch chose Cayuga Lake

Bought this house in 1977 from Moog synthesizer inventor/musician Bob Moog who was moving to North Carolina to celebrate his break from the corporate world. Loved this house at first sight - and the incredible beauty of the Finger Lakes' gorges and waterfalls nearby.

What makes this apartment unique

Ideal location, next to the beauty of Taughannock Falls State Park and it's amazing waterfalls and breathtaking hiking trails, two minute drive to Cayuga Lake with water access and swimming beach, across the road from the stream that flows into the 215' waterfall, and midway between Ithaca and the 20+ wineries of the Cayuga Lake Wine trail and Finger Lakes wine country. Not to mention all the wineries on nearby Seneca and Keuka Lakes.

Well Kept - Great Location

  • 5 of 5

The property is attractive, well kept, well equipped, and located in a beautiful area. The owners are responsive, helpful, and very nice people. The property is on the entrance road to the beautiful Taughannock Falls State Park. It is a short walk to the park trails and sights. Ithaca, Cornell, and Cayuga Lake are close by. The town of Trumansburg is charming. Very nice!

Perfect weekend getaway for a couple!!

  • 5 of 5

This was exactly what we were looking for. There is so much to do in the area and we just needed somewhere to sleep, eat, shower and regroup. My husband and I found all of that at the Eagles' nest. The property is peaceful, quiet (except for the sound of the falls!). The apartment is clean and comfortable. We slept well and found everything we needed within a short drive.

Loretta and Steve were the perfect hosts - and helpful in pointing us to recommended restaurants, activities, wineries etc. They even recommended their mechanic when we had some tire trouble. We'll definitely be back!

We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this cozy apartment for three nights and we loved it! The apartment is on the second floor with the windows looking out on the beautiful gardens. It is in a very quiet and peaceful location and is a perfect place to get away from the hectic everyday life. The apartment had everything that we needed for a comfortable stay. It is very clean and well-organized. Loretta was very pleasant and made us feel welcome. She was easy to get in touch with and responded to our emails very quickly. Overall, it was an excellent experience and we would love to stay there again!

Optimal Hosting

  • 5 of 5

Great setting, hospitality, immediate access to hiking trail at scenic state park, maps for nearby destiny points, listing for area restaurants.

Consideration in providing for my lap top needs and printing. Saved the day.

Moderate weather at the time provided an additional comfort.
