Overview

About the property

Lovely Apartment Adjacent To Taughannock Falls State Park and Cayuga Lake.

This lovely second floor apartment is next to Taughannock Falls State Park, which has the highest single drop waterfall in the Northeastern United States (33 feet higher than Niagara Falls). The location is perfect for outdoor activities including hiking the gorge trails and the newly completed Black Diamond Trail (which runs from Trumansburg to Ithaca along a former train route), biking, swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, boating, and fishing. Hiking the nature trails along the gorges, which are up to 400' high, provides panoramic and dramatic views of the gorges formed by the ice age. Minutes from the Cayuga Wine Trail, which includes scenic wineries, distilleries, cideries and breweries. There are great restaurants nearby, many featuring free live music. Only ten miles to Ithaca and to Watkins Glen, across the street from a beautiful stream that flows into the waterfall. You can hear the soothing sounds of the stream as you doze off to sleep. Peaceful surroundings and beautiful gardens. Saturday summertime lakefront outdoor concerts at Taughannock Park.

Newly renovated smaller second floor apartment in owner's country home, cozy and comfortable, perfect for 1-2 people. The bedroom has a new queen size mattress, solid Amish-made oak dresser plus air conditioner. The cheerful sunroom/dining room has a cypress wood table and chairs and looks out over the expansive grounds. We call the apartment the Eagles Nest, since it sits above the magnolia trees and overlooks large black walnut trees and many flower gardens. There's a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, oven and range, coffee maker, toaster and microwave. In addition there's a newly tiled bathroom, a den with two chairs and flat screen DirectTV with 63 channels and second air conditioner, a walk-in closet, and wireless internet connection. Linens, towels and soft cotton bedding and blankets are supplied, and several Metropolitan Museum of Art reproductions hang on the walls. Close to the quaint village of Trumansburg which offers boutique and art gallery shops, excellent restaurants, a large grocery store and liquor store, pharmacy, natural foods store and deli, bank, beautiful public library, new bowling alley and laundromat. The house was formerly owned by Robert Moog, who invented the synthesizer, and who invited many famous musicians to the home, i.e. the Beatles and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The house will be included in an upcoming documentary about the life of Bob Moog, scheduled to be released this year.

Please note that this is a second floor apartment (as shown in the photos) and there are stairs leading up to the apartment.

About Loretta Heimbuch

Retired graphic artist/teacher, originally from New Jersey and so grateful to now be living in the beauty of the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY.

Loretta Heimbuch purchased this apartment in 1977

Why Loretta Heimbuch chose Cayuga Lake

Bought this house in 1977 from Moog synthesizer inventor/musician Bob Moog who was moving to North Carolina to celebrate his break from the corporate world. Loved this house at first sight - and the incredible beauty of the Finger Lakes' gorges and waterfalls nearby.

What makes this apartment unique

Ideal location, next to the beauty of Taughannock Falls State Park and it's amazing waterfalls and breathtaking hiking trails, two minute drive to Cayuga Lake with water access and swimming beach, right on the road that runs parallel with the stream that flows into the 215' waterfall, and midway between Ithaca and the 20+ wineries of the Cayuga Lake Wine trail and Finger Lakes wine country.

Very quiet and serene

  • 5 of 5

The host was right on time, both very easy people to like!... As soon as you get of of your vehicle , your greated by fresh air and the sound of rushing river water. The apartment was clean, well stocked and cozy. The location and its views are spectacular I'd highly recommend it for hikers and bird enthusiast, every morning there's incredible birdsong. There's trout below the waterfall.

Tired in Trumansburg

  • 2 of 5

I did not sleep well at all during our stay because the bed was very uncomfortable. It was a thin mattress on wooden slats with no box spring. It leaned to one side and it felt like you were falling out. The chairs in the small living room were not comfortable either. The stairs that you had to climb to get to the apartment were very steep and dangerous. Near Taughannock Falls and close to Ithaca, but really needs improvements made to the property.

Owner's Response: We're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay and that you weren't able to sleep well. It is a platform bed with a new mattress, and we have never had any other negative feedback about the bed. We always accompany every guest up the stairs and suggest they easily prop open the outside door as they bring luggage up. There is also a photo of the stairs on the website. We appreciate your feedback and we hope you have a better stay the next time you visit the Finger Lakes.

Very Clean and Private Charming Apartment

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here while attending one of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail Events. Loretta and her husband Steve are available if need them, but give you your privacy. This rental truly seemed like a tranquil home away from home. We enjoyed seeing the chickens in the yard and being so close to the beautiful Waterfall. There is a grocery store nearby if you decided to cook in, but they also have prepared food and a deli where you can get great sandwiches. We couldn't believe how good their breakfast sandwiches were. We plan on staying here again when we are in the area.

My stay was peaceful and quiet.

  • 5 of 5

Loretta is kind and helpful, allowed my daughter to pick up the key, that allowed us the freedom to have dinner in town and not be rushed. The area is beautiful, lots of wild life and hiking. Ithaca has great food. This property is the perfect location outside Ithaca. The apartment is clean, quiet and quaint. I highly recommend this property.

Lovely, clean, beuatiful location, perfect for two people.

This was the sweetest space near Ithaca, the falls (only a half mile away), biking and hiking trails. We had such a wonderful surprise to have a creek just across the road. It was welcoming, clean and just the right size for two people. Definitely recommend!

Wonderful Little Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in October. The apartment was nice and cozy and spotlessly clean. We had a very nice and relaxing stay, and Loretta was great with communication and lovely to meet! There are just enough pots/pans etc. to prepare a small meal. I prepared a small pot of chili, and I had brought along my own small pan and ingredients to prepare a little batch of bar cookies. There is a full grocery store about a 5 minute drive away. We had a great time exploring the area, including Lake Ontario, Watkins Glen, and many stops in between. The state park right up the street is gorgeous! We will stay again for sure if we return to this area!
