This charming little traditional Newfoundland Saltbox home was built around 1850 and is one of the oldest homes in the region. It has been lovingly restored and now offers all the modern conveniences you will need to make your vacation stay both comfortable and memorable.
It was featured on the cover and a seven page article in the 'HOME & CABIN' magazine. You can see this article and view the fantastic slideshow if you visit homeandcabin.ca and type 'Baccalieu cottage' in the search area.
It sits proudly in a meadow in the fishing village of Ochre Pit Cove along the scenic Baccalieu Trail in Conception Bay North, approx. 140 km. from the capital city of St. John's.
This comfortable home is a cozy place to unwind after a long day of hiking and sightseeing. Take a two minute walk to the fishermens wharf and see what todays catch will bring. There is also a whale watching area close to the wharf where you can see the whales breach as they feed on the schools of caplin in the bay.

I am a retired medical professional who has spent most weekends and all my summers in this area of the Baccalieu Trail for the past number of years. When this property became available in 2001 my husband and I along with a family friend decided to buy it and restore it to its original glory and this year we decided to allow visitors to rent it and enjoy the same newfoundland experience we have been enjoying in this area for many years.
Catherine Whalen purchased this cottage in 2001
This little gem is probably the oldest traditional saltbox home along the Baccalieu Trail and when the opportunity became available to purchase it, we didn't hesitate and it has been a labor of love bringing it back to life. Now it sits proudly in this great little fishing village.
We have a large wrap around patio which give great ocean views and the interior is furnished with antiques and vintage, quirky re-purposed furniture.
After 2 weeks of touring NL our stay at this cottage has been the highlight of our vacation. The cottage is just beautiful; the owners certainly did an amazing job in restoring and decorating it. We loved it. Thank you Kitty for your kind attentions and your warm welcome.
We were lucky enough to spend three days in this wonderful Ochre Pit Cove home. We would highly recommend you stay here when visiting Newfoundland. A "stickler" for cleanliness I can tell you the cottage was spotless. Everything and more that was needed for meal preparation was there. The beds were comfortable and quality linens were fresh, just lovely. We came to spend time with our daughter who has recently moved to St. John's and were not disappointed. We spent the days hiking the many trails with breathtaking views in the area. How lovely it was to come back to Baccalieu Cottage in the afternoon and relax on the deck to plan our next day adventure. Thank you Kitty and Tom for all your help and allowing us to make our happy Newfoundland memories. We would love to come back and spend more time at this amazing cottage.

Travel with three children under 10 can be daunting, but our stay at Baccalieu cottage helped up to truly relax. Our hosts thought of everything from small beach toys for the kids to a lovely selection of teas for the adults. We really enjoyed the beautiful deck view each morning and evening and all the comforts of the cottage.
For us, the location was superb - close enough to do laundry and groceries in Carbinear and daytrip up to Bay de Verde for hiking. Our hosts accommodated our every request and made sure we were well taken care of. We'd love to return one day!
Baccalieu Cottage was absolutley beautiful. This fully restored Saltbox is so homey and comfortable. The view is gorgeous and Ochre Pit is a charming, quiet spot. Catherine's attention to detail was great - the decor was lovely, the linens high quality, and the wine and cod a lovely, welcoming surprise. We felt so at home here. I highly recommend this spot - by far my favourite of our trip!
The house is beautiful and very functional. Exceptionally well equipped with every you would want, sharp knives, beautiful china, enough glasses, a water jug, wine glasses and all the condiments!! (butter, jam, ketchup, mustard, mayo, lots of herbs, oil, vinegar) All you need to bring is a relaxing attitude and some wine :)
Also great for kids, some sand toys were there and enough room for them to play inside and outside.
The owner is very accommodating!! Hope we can come back some time!
Our stay in the Baccalieu Cottage was simply a joy. This was the first stop in a two week journey in Newfoundland. The owner, Kitty, was there to warmly welcome us to her lovely home. The cottage itself is beautifully and skillfully decorated and maintained-we particularly loved the stained glass window at the top of the stairs and the artwork. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need, and then some! Each morning we had our coffee on the deck and enjoyed the view of the ocean. We would have to say the highlight of staying at the Baccalieu Cottage was Kitty's warmth, her careful consideration of our every need, and her helpful suggestions and kindness which made our time here even that much more enjoyable. If you are planning a stay in this area of Newfoundland, we doubt that you will find a more welcoming and beautiful home.
