Loft apartment over a small barn, on a Midcoast Maine island, close to Acadia National Park. The apartment is fully furnished, provides comfortable accommodations for a single, or couple. It is a fifteen minute walk to the shore. The property is located in the woods on 5 acres on one of Maine's coastal islands, Swan's Island. The apartment is a seasonal rental, available from mid-May through September, by the night (two nights minimum weekends - Friday&Saturday), with a weekly rate available on request.
The rental is on the north side of Swan's island, in an area known as 'Island Retreat'.The apartment overlooks a large clearing, and is about a short walk from the shore. The area is on/near several hiking trails.
There are no moose, bear, porcupines, skunks, or poisonous snakes on Swans Island.
There is no public camping on the island.
Swans Island is accessible by Maine State DOT Ferry, from Bass Harbor. In the summer, most days, there are six round trips daily. There is no public transportation on Swans Island, bicycling is a challenge due to the terrain. The island is about 7,000 acres in extent, with about twenty miles of roads.

First, thanks Sharon and Jim! Josh and I had a fun time on the island! The rental is located on Swans Island which is accessible by ferry. We brought our car so that we could visit all of the sites on the island. The rental unit is located in a forrested community on Jim and Sharons property. It is well equiped with cooking gear, vhs and dvd collection, linens, etc. Jim provided maps of the island and guidance on what to do. We rented his 2 person kayak and enjoyed exploring the island in this way; observing land, water, and sky creatures. Also went on several short day hikes. A trip to Tim's store was a daily routine for us, but we had also done grocery shopping before we arrived to the island. September appears to be a nice, quiet month to visit. The locals were all very friendly and interested in sharing a story or 2. Beautiful scenery- nice escape! Thanks!
My husband and I needed a few days away to relax and this was the perfect place to do it. Very nice small cabin like accommodation that was very clean, comfortable and had everything you needed. It's in a very quiet area and a short walk to the water. We also enjoyed exploring the island in our car. Fine sand beach was beautiful and I could see spending days there to lay in the sun and hear the waves crash. Sharon and Jim are also very kind and helpful. They helped us get in contact with a lobster fisherman on the island so we could get our own lobsters. We cooked our own lobsters for the first time which was a fun experience. The cabin has everything you would need to cook lobsters so you'll be all set. I would definitely stay here again. We would probably stay longer next time! Thank you Jim and Sharon for our cool Maine experience :)
Jim and Sharon were spectacular hosts while my friend and I stayed at the apartment for an extended weekend. The apartment has everything you could think of, including paper goods, soap, shampoo and a tea infuser! There is plenty of space for two, lots of natural light and good airflow with the many windows that can be opened. It is in a secluded part of the island so there aren't loud neighbors or lots of cars driving by; it is as peaceful as can be! A highlight for us was the provided Chromecast, a great addition in today's age that allows guest to access their Netflix, Amazon, Hulu etc. accounts, so you don't have to worry about leaving a binge-watch midway through.
The island was a great place to explore. There were lots of short trails to bluff points and beaches. We did a lot of rock hopping (best at low tide) and laying about at Fine Sand Beach. The trails at East Point Road and Red Point Road where highlights for us. If you don't mind the longer walk and want more privacy on the beach, the Rockefeller Estate beach at Irish Point is a great locale. If you like to Kayak, there are multiple places to put the boat in an explore the many glacial-formed inlets that are the epitome of coastal Maine.
TIMS was a lovely little store where we were able to get butter we had forgotten, but guests should definitely do the majority of their shopping on the mainland at one of the large stores in Ellsworth, or Gotts in Southwest Harbor. Gotts is small but it does have a large selection and a small deli. If take-out is your favorite though, TIMS has a great menu for that.
My boyfriend and I had such a lovely time staying at Jim and Sharon's studio apartment on Swan's Island. It was the prefect getaway for a long weekend. Jim and Sharon were very helpful in letting us know all of the greatest things to do around the island. We will definitely come back again!
My husband and I greatly enjoyed our stay. We wish we could have stayed longer than just 4 days! Jim and Sharon made us feel welcome from the very beginning and provided excellent advice for how best to enjoy the island. This is a unique and beautiful retreat, and we had everything we needed in the cozy apartment, including access to excellent hikes to the waterfront as well as beautiful vistas in walking distance. We highly recommend this stay if you are looking for a relaxing, peaceful retreat, which was perfect for us. It is also very nice to have a full kitchen to be able to cook meals. We also enjoyed the lighthouse and picnics on the island, as well as the books and reading material about the island that Jim and Sharon offer in the apartment. It was an insightful and pleasant glimpse into a very meaningful and special way of life. We hope to come back soon!
Swan's island is the perfect place to get away from it all. Free from crowds, the island offers beautiful views with fun and relaxing adventure. Jim and Sharon couldn't have been more kind and helpful during our stay!
The apartment is in a Loft over a shop, located in a clearing in a spruce forest. The clearing where the loft apartment is located, is about a fifteen minute walk from the shore front. The location is on the north side of the island, about three miles from the island Ferry Terminal.
