Los Chonchos is an eco village situated 35 minutes south of Puerto Vallerta in a protected 40 acres of jungle. There are only 20 palapas in this beautiful, untouched area of Mexico. There are three amazing beaches, the smaller one the water taxi lands on, the pebble beach, and the incredible long beach just 3 minutes walk (as shown in the pictures) from the palapa. You are likely to be the only one on the beach! Keep to yourself, or join the other visitors and inhabitants twice a day as the water taxi visits, help the new visitors off the taxi, and share the news of the day - it is entirely up to you!
There are no roads to the eco village - the only way to get there is by water taxi from Bocca. Need more groceries, either hike into Chimo (about an hour) or take the water taxi to Yelapa. Take time in Yelapa to check out the waterfalls and drink a cold beer on the beach - a great day trip to take!
Other Things to Note
If requiring chef please arrange prior to arrival with owner.
This was a different experience for my dad and I! We had a good time and loved the quietness of this location. The people are all SO friendly and helpful. We had a hick-up but the owners were AMAZING to work with. If you want to "go off the grid" this is the place to do it.
My husband and I booked this Palapa for three nights on my birthday last year. I don't even know where to start!
The water taxi to the palapa was an experience all on its own! The water was a bit rough so landing the boat on the beach wasn't possible. The boat simply rode a wave in and we were told to jump into waist deep water with our suitcases and all! Thank goodness Igor (think bald Tarzan) was there to drag me out of the water by my hoochie!! I wouldn't let this deter me from booking again but next time I will definitely pack light and jump straight into Tarzan's arms!
The Palapa was AMAZING. It is wide open to the water and when a storm kicked up we could feel the ocean mist while laying in bed. Again AMAZING but know what you signed up for. It is a very authentic experience but not for those looking for luxery amenities. The food was great as well. We booked a full day of being served tasty authentic meals on my birthday. It was a nice treat and next time I would book more meals for sure.
There is a beach at the resort but the water was very rough during our stay so swimming was a challenge. There is a much bigger, calmer and totally private beach about 5 mins. through the jungle.
Come prepared to stay longer than expected if it's stormy. Our water taxi could not come to pick us up when scheduled due to high winds and rough water. So we ended up getting an extra night, which was great but we missed our flights the following morning and ran low on supplies. I trecked through the jungle to a nearby village but it was quite a treck for very limited supplies. So keep that in mind when booking. Bring extra food and leave yourself an extra day to travel just in case. You can always stay in PV for a night or two before heading home.
All in all it was much more than I had expected. Not just a vacation rental but a true experience I will never forget! I would recommend this to anyone that is looking for a private, romantic, natural retreat.
We were quite disheartened that the "romantic Beachfront Palapa" was not more fully described. We were first time palapa renters and jungle visitors. The conditions of living at the palapa are not fully disclosed on any of this properties listings.
Renter be aware: one cannot leave food on the counters because the varied bugs and beasts will come and take it away or feast on it right in front of your eyes. In our case red ants....that burn your skin if touched... by the hundreds ....consumed a potato that was innocently left on the counter to cool. Those quiet peaceful waves? Laughing out loud...waves crashing 24/7, there is no silence to be had. Especially when there are no doors or windows to close. So if you are looking for quiet this is not the place. Don't hope for dry towels after a swim at the beach. The humidity is so high that it takes days for clothing to dry. The bedding, the couch pillows, the green round lounger. everything smells of mildew. A 3 minute stroll to the big private beach? Try a 10 minute hilly hike through the jungle and dried river ravine over roots, rocks & vines. Flip flops are not an option on that trail. And dont touch the sticks and trees. Poisonwood trees act like poison ivy and burn your flesh to blistery wounds. Fresh fruit rots in the solar powered fridge...but hey the freezer works great! Cutlery was all grimey. Everything had to be washed. Hot shower? Not in this palapa..during our stay anyway. Check in the bed sheets every night cause spiders like it in the sheets. So do the cockroaches. The forest comes alive at night very loudly, can't shut the sound out, no doors, no windows. So bring ear plugs if you have excellent hearing and are looking for silence.
We left after 4 days our fresh food stock spoilt."helpers" nowhere to be found. And when we kindly and thoughfully wrote to the owners explaining the lack of hot water and refrigerator not working, we were called liars, renter beware. they take your money and never look back.
I am sure the owners will refute our comments claiming their high ratings...we know different we have the rude emails calling us liars to prove the lack of conscious awareness and customer care. If you are looking to rough it this is it full on jungle life. Rudimentary camping... If you are looking for a quiet retreat to silence the mind rest the body...this isn't it. The bed is as firm as the floor. We hope our comments inspire upgrades and full disclosure for future guests.
At Chonchos I felt totally imbedded into the sub-tropical jungle and the wild sea shore environment.
It is the place to really slow down from our hectic "real" world" and to start to use all our senses to discover the natural surroundings and all its inhabitants. Kevin and Chemain's bungalow has all the basic creature comforts and from their amazing balcony one has a throne seat overlooking the fast pacific ocean and one can listen to the surf-sometimes pounding wildly or lapping gently onto the shore rocks-depending on the weather or the season. The description of their place reflects the reality but one has to personally experience this little village environment to fully appreciate its wild magic!
The guests and palapa owners on site were really friendly and helpful with our jumping on/off the water taxi and helping with the loading/unloading of guest baggage-please bring duffel bags instead of suit cases and I recommend you to securely pack your important belongings in water prove bags. You may want to were a flotation vest on the boat for safety and extra warmth for the windy boat ride. Light neoprene booties would protect your feet during launching/landing of a kayak and getting on/off the water taxi at the Chonchos pebble beach! (Teva- Sandals fill up with sand in 2 Seconds!).
I you seek a loud and super busy night life and all the (inclusive) meals and margaritas by the concrete pool-this is not the place for you, but if you want to reconnect with the natural world without all the electronic information overload distractions, this is a rare peace of haven!
My husband and I had the best trip ever here. Everything about it was magical. Everything advertised was exactly as it said. As long as you understand what rustic means, you'll have an amazing trip. I have 2 things I wish the owner had shared with me... These aren't complaints, they are suggestions for future guests. Don't bring a suitcase. A hiking backpack or duffles work best. You're pulling up on a beach in the water taxi, you're jumping out, someone else is throwing you're luggage to a person waiting on the beach. A suitcase works (I didn't think about that, so that's what I took, even though I had the other options mentioned) but it's not at all helpful or convenient. The second thing...if you will be doing your own shopping in town, bring bags and collapsible coolers. Like the recyclable ones from your grocery. That was another thing I didn't think about. As a result all my groceries were in the regular plastic bags from the store. Which completely worked until the unloading from the water taxi. Some broke, and it apparently caused stress from some of the other Palapa owners who were helping us unload. We recieved some very disrespectful comments from them. With the info the owners gave you and my small suggestions, it will be the best trip of your life. I still talk about it, and it took me 3 months to write this! I can't wait to go back. Oh! One more suggestion, a sanitary one if you will. I made so much fun of my husband for bringing wipes, like the Charmin bathroom wipes. Do it, you'll thank me, I know it.
"Of all the peoples whom I have studied, from city dwellers to cliff dwellers, I always find that at least 50 percent would prefer to have at least one jungle between themselves and their mothers-in-law." We are not sure if anthropologist Margaret Mead had been in Jalisco but we can assure you that at this beautiful place you'll find one jungle between yourself and the rest of the world. Back in Minnesota (from plus 25 to minus 25 Celsius) we miss the ever-present sound of the ocean, happy hours at the beach, the view of whales from the veranda and the starlit sky at night. Thank you so much - we had a wonderful stay at your palapa, it instantly became a home away. Special thanks also to Igor and the other guys for their assistance - everything was perfect!
