About the property

Darling One Bedroom, Kitchen, Jetted Tub At Foot Of Sun Mountain, Sunset Views

Nestled among two acres of pinons at the foot of the sacred Sun Mountain, your casita beckons. Sunsets and sunrises greet you daily, with Sun mountain to your back only being about a 30 minute hike to the top. There you'll understand why people move to Santa Fe. A mile away is Museum Hill. A few blocks further are the art galleries, restaurants, and the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. Georgia spent her last years only a couple blocks from Sun Mountain Casita. After a day here, you'll understand why. It is the perfect quiet place to watch the skies change over the city and mountains after a day in the land of enchantment. Step into your jetted tub, grill some salmon, and enjoy a glass of wine while the Santa Fe light lingers on your private patio. Enjoy the bird feeders, flowers and the sounds of coyotes as the lights twinkle before you. The perfect retreat, Sun Mountain Casita will cast her gentle spell on you, beckoning you to return.

About Nancy or George Roberts

George grew up a missionary kid in Zimbabwe, and met Nancy in California. After raising two boys, they set out to find their perfect paradise, Santa Fe, although they call the world their home. Avid travelers, they have been to 75 countries. They are devotees of Argentine Tango, and love dogs of all kinds.

Nancy or George Roberts purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Nancy or George Roberts chose New Mexico

The property is unusual as it is so close to downtown, yet on two view acres. Most people say it is the best view they've seen in Santa Fe, and Sun Mountain is literally at your back door. Close to everything yet in a peaceful paradise, we felt completely blessed to be able to purchase this property, and now share it with you. The house was built in 1930, and the floors are old 18 in wide plank pine...a rarity now. Harold Littlefield built the place and we've done our best to restore it, and not change it much. We call it rustic elegance.

What makes this cottage unique

Well, to us and our friends, this property has soul, as soon as you turn in the long driveway, shaded by pinons. The views will take your breath away, as Santa Fe skies change each hour. You can watch summer storms come in and go out all across the valley, from Albuquerque to some say, Colorado. The living room floor has 18 inch wide boards from the 1930's and vigas across the living room ceiling. The Jotul fireplace heats the whole casita. Charm oozes from each room, with lovely original art, to the mosaic bathroom. Bird feeders are all around, and the curved walls of the patio drip with purple wisteria in the summer, framing other flowers. You won't want to leave!

Perfect for our needs.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Santa Fe for the balloon fest in Albuquerque. This house had everything we needed, was very close to town and had no problems. The price was right which was the most important aspect for us, and they let us have our dog with us which was a priority. We have a well trained dog, so we had no problems. We would recommend staying in this cozy home in the mountains as it was pleasant and quiet.

Great stay in Sante Fe

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 nights at this quaint and cozy casita in August. The absolutely best feature is the wonderful location. The back patio boosts a lovely view of Sante Fe and the mountains beyond. On the first night I saw a shooting star. We spent every night on the patio watching the stars and the lights of Sante Fe. The casita was great as well, nicely furnished and spacious for two people and maybe one young child. I cooked all our breakfasts as well as a few snack meals in the small kitchen. There are no condiments or food basics in the kitchen so you must bring everything you are cooking including foil or plastic wrap but pots and pans are adequate. The bed was comfortable. The only thing I would change is putting the tv in the living room. We loved our stay and hope to return.

We stayed at this cozy casita in February - not a normal time for people to visit Santa Fe. It was cold with a good deal of snow on the ground. The street and drive were not paved, and accordingly slushy. There wasn't really a rug to wipe your feet off on. Well, there was, but it was covered in snow. The front door, which is as old as the casita (antique), could use some weatherstripping, as the cold air came right through the unsealed crack. The only heating source is a gas stove in the living area. The TV, however, is in the bedroom, which, along with the bathroom, is neither heated nor cooled (see previous review about heat in June). The kitchen is stocked with pots and pans and spices for a gourmet chef - yet no counter space. I can't imagine those pots and pans have ever been used (there is a small range). A bar-sized sink and no drying space would prohibit their use even further. The counter slopes to the point that we thought the coffee maker might slide off. The hot water in the shower is plumbed "backwards" from the usual (hot water is on the right) which is always a challenge to figure out. When the owners lit a fire, we could smell the smoke inside the casita.

Pros: WI-FI was quite strong. Bed was comfortable and warm enough with the extra blanket. Pillows were great. It was close to the square. If the weather was a little warmer, we would have hiked behind St. John's college which was almost walking distance.

In summary, it is an adequate short-term rental for 1-2 people (not 3 as advertized, unless someone wants to sleep on a futon on the floor). Guests should expect to eat all meals out.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. The pictures do show the size of the small kitchen, but in the past we had a tenant live there for two years, so felt it adequate for your two nights. For 120.00 it is a bargain for Santa Fe. If you need a larger kitchen may I suggest www.vrbo.com/639257. It is doubtful that for 120.00 that you will find a large kitchen anywhere in Santa Fe but if that is important, just look at the pictures before booking... Yes, snow does fall sometimes on the front porch, and people are not there to brush it off all the time. We are sorry it happened to you. The thermostat on the wall gives you as much heat as needed, but perhaps it wasn't explained well enough for you. We will work on that as well as point out the space heater in the closet for additional heat. No one was in the main house so the fire you mentioned must have come in from a neighbor. The couch ends turn down within a second to make a third bed. I have slept on it before myself, and found it adequate for a few nights. We do hope you will return so we can make things right for you. Thank you, Nancy and George

Inspiring View

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the beautiful view from the patio of the casita. It was a quiet retreat on the side if the mountain but still very convenient to Canyon Road and the plaza. Found ever thing to be satisfactory and will consider staying there again on the future.

"Excuse me, my wife is not dressed."

  • 3 of 5

Very nice view, no question about it. We enjoyed a couple of nice cool evenings on the patio, watching the storms roll through. At bedtime, however it was not so cool. Even though we had the doors open and the fans on for hours, the casita would not let go of the heat it had been building up during the day. We even tried the tiny window air conditioner to no avail. Outside it was lovely; inside, not so. The one opening window is in the bedroom and opens onto the driveway. We decided against keeping that open after a car rolled up somewhere nearby at 2 AM and someone banged on a door... not at the casita...but close enough to be disturbing. At 9 AM our second morning, someone walked across our patio a few times. Cup of coffee in hand I said hello. He identified himself as part of the cleaning crew and wanted to know if we were leaving that day. I said yes, but we would like to have some privacy and mentioned that my wife was inside and not fully dressed. The said, "that's OK", and proceeded to make a couple more trips across the casita patio, doing something at the main house. Kinda spoiled the vibe. One little thing...bring your own bath soap. Only a small liquid hand soap was provided.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry that your stay was not perfect. If you had called we would have explained that June is our hottest month in Santa Fe, which is why our prices are lower. We also would like to have explained that opening a window and/or door in another room creates a cross breeze, which helps a lot. Lastly, we would be happy to have explained to you to keep the air conditioner on with the windows closed and it would have cooled the casita off. In the mornings is the only time we can have the gardener come by to water, and I'm sorry if he disturbed you. He tries his best to be unobtrusive. We hope you will give us another chance, perhaps, in the fall, to earn a 5 star review.
