This house has 1 bedroom/1 bathroom on the main floor with a queen size bed, 2 bedrooms upstairs (one with a king bed and the other with 2 twins). The home is fully equipped with everything you need for a memorable stay. During your stay you have 2400 acres of private land to hike, bike, ride horses or ATVs, picnic, and fish the blue ribbon Bitterroot River (which is the West boundary of the ranch).
John and I grew up in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley and it will be our home forever. The saying, 'there's no place like home' is so true and we feel so blessed to live in such an amazing area.
John and Jani Meuchel purchased this house in 1946
My dad moved to this property as a boy when the neighbors in town complained of 'too many hound dogs'. He purchased the ranch from his parents in 1965 and my grandmother continued to live in this house for many years. We thought that many guests would enjoy the beautiful scenery and tranquility of the ranch that I was blessed to enjoy as a child.
This home was built in 1939 and is located on a working ranch and the views from the large living room windows are incredible. You'll enjoy many of the original features of this home. One of the many attractions is the fishing access right out the front door.
Had several days at this perfect riverside house with family. Perfect location for fishing the bitterroot and surrounding smaller waters and placed conveniently between Hamilton and Darby where you can find great fly shops, restauarants, breweries and groicery stores . Enjoyed morning coffee at the gazebo overlooking the river and ended the day with a camp fire with the ranch mountains as our backdrop. The views on your walk up old darby road are some of the best in the valley. Add to all this that the owners are great with pre-trip communication and we got a chance to meet John and he was even more generous with his time and advice in person . Wonderful people and a wonderful property. We will be back . Thanks again John and Jani
This home and the surrounding ranch are beautiful! With a river, horses grazing, and a great mountain view out EVERY window it is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy nature. The nice sized comfortable home, with great bedrooms and decor, has everything you need to make you feel at home and John and Jani are very friendly and accommodating. This home has been in the family for years and the owners have put time and energy into making it a great place for others to enjoy!
Just bring your clothes and food and everything else is provided.
There are several quaint towns within 15 minutes for shopping, groceries, and eating. Lake Como is only about 15 minutes away and it has great hiking and water access.
I highly recommend this lovely home for anyone who wants to have a relaxing experience in rural Montana.
Thank you to John and Jani for making this year's Sister's Trip great! Nic, Liz, and Michelle
We loved this rental!!!!It was beautiful, quaint, and had everything we needed close by.The river was amazing and John was an absolute gem taking the time to come and teach my boys how to fly fish. They have found a new hobby and a new love because of his patience and guidance.Jani was so sweet and easy to talk to about any problems I encountered at the house. We already are trying to figure out when we can come out again to visit.Jani your grandmothers home was truly a blessing to us and we will hold this house, you and John close to our hearts. Thanks again. P.S. I mentioned to John about the rug in the hallway that you may want to just do away it as I slipped and fell,my husband and both my boys slipped on it also.Beautiful touch but a bit unsafe for anyone walking down the stairs.
Grandma's House was the most PERFECT place we have ever stayed. It felt like the house wanted you to be there. Everything in the house had an old world feel, but was spotless and redone beautifully. We slept like rocks, going to bed and waking up to the sound of the river outside the window, wild geese and song birds. Heaven!
The location was amazing, if you want peace and quiet. We spent an entire day fishing on the river. We ate dinner and breakfast sitting in the little gazebo that overlooks the river. Talk about a view!
We did not want to leave this charming place and if possible, would have stayed for the rest of of our trip!
We were not able to meet John and Jani, but John was charming on the phone. We feel very fortunate that they allowed us to spend some time at their exquisite place.

Our family spent 3 nights at the house in October and we enjoyed every moment. The location on a large ranch in the Bitterroot valley is absolutely beautiful, and it is only a short distance from the towns of Hamilton and Darby. It's a great place to hike, fly fish, view wildlife, sit by a fire, or just relax in the gazebo and watch the river go by. The owners were there to greet us when we arrived. We enjoyed visiting with them and appreciated their hospitality. The stucco house has been restored, remodeled, and tastefully decorated. It has new appliances, washer and dryer, 3 bedrooms, large dining room table, satellite TV, Towels, Linens and all the kitchen utensils needed to cook family meals. We prepared all of our meals at the house except for one breakfast at our favorite place in Hamilton - the Coffee Cup. I would highly recommend this property to anyone who appreciates the beauty of the outdoors in rural Montana. It is our hope that everyone who stays in the home, which once belonged to the owners grandmother, will leave it in pristine condition for all others to enjoy. Whenever we come back to Montana, this is where we would like to stay. Thanks to the owners for sharing this piece of heaven.
We enjoyed our stay immensely, the house was perfect, spacious, clean and all the amenities while the property was perfect, wildlife and right next to the river for fishing.
