Our ancestors were early pioneers and setteled in this lake area in the 1920s. They developed the Crestwood area with wagons, horses and one very old Ford tractor. They cleared the land, added fill dirt on the lowest areas and dug channels to make lots available for buyers and developers. Cottages were built by our great grandfather on this land and on many of the nearby lakes. Our great grandmother started one of the first Real Estate businesses in the area and sold the lots and cottages to early lake visitors.
Turtle Cove Cottage purchased this house in 2014
We were thrilled to have an opportunity to revisit and own some of our heritage with the Barbee Lakes Chain. We were raised on nearby Little Barbee Lake, have many relatives nearby, and currently live in Colorado. We have missed the lakes and family for many years. In fact, our local property manager is a family member.
The private wildlife area adjacent to the cottage has been handed down through the generations, with requests that it remain home to native animals and plants. We are very happy to keep it that way. Wetlands and marshes are necessary to the balance of nature and to keep the lakes clean and healthy. We are proud to own this marsh land because they are disappearing at an alarming rate.
Our family loves this property for many reasons. Growing up on Little Barbee Lake this marshland has always been a favorite of ours as we travel through the channels to the different lakes. Turtles, water lilies, Red-Winged Blackbirds and Great Blue Herons and swans are always present. How wonderful to now own a cottage next to it.
We also love to once again be a part of the preservation of the Barbee Lakes Chain. There are seven interconnected natural lakes:
Kuhn Lake 137 acres with a large sandbar for swimming
Big Barbee Lake 304 acres all-speeds, sandbar for swimming
Little Barbee Lake 74 acres,
Irish Lake 182 acres,
Banning Lake 17 acres,
Sechrist Lake 105 acres, sandbar for swimming
Sawmill 36 acres.
For an extra treat we would exit Sawmill on the north end and travel by boat up the Grassy Creek Wetlands channel, cross over the small dam and lock system and continue on to Big Tippy and Little Tippy which are two more natural all-speed lakes. Little Tippy also features a large Wetlands area and sandbar.
Boats and Waverunners can be rented at local marinas on Big Tippy.
Bring your own watercrafts and use the private boat ramp for easy access to all of the lakes. Fishing is awesome!
My family of 4 adults found the cottage to be very much like a home. A well stocked kitchen and modern appliances made mealtime simple. There is more than ample storage throughout the home and everything worked just fine. We enjoyed being able to dock our boat just off of the patio and found the view to be very pleasing as well. There is ample opportunity to fish, boat, tube, ski and sight see all around the numerous connected lakes. I caught several fish from the dock and we caught a cooler full of fish from the lakes! We loved it! The owners kept us very informed and were a pleasure to deal with. We hope to stay here again.
I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet, restful clean and neat cottage . This is very close to antique shops and dining, also the Amish area is about 20 minutes away. There are gift shops and dining places there too, also buggy rides. We had a very nice time.
My wife and I have spent over a month this year at the cottage. The cottage is very comfortable. It is well stocked and attractive.
We have meet the owners and they are delightful people.
This was our third year renting this cottage. It is beautifully decorated inside, very clean, and very well furnished. The owners are so easy to work with! It is probably our favorite place to kayak. They have put sand on the cement leading to the water so it's very easy to launch the kayaks. There is access to seven lakes. There is always wildlife to see and a very quiet, peaceful environment.
Our family's 3 night stay at this warm and comforting lake cottage was delightful because of all the amenities provided to us by the owners of Tutle Cove Cottage. Great communication and kindness from the owners helped set us up for a great visit, but the secluded location, great wildlife, fishing and ease of cleaning at the on site fishing cleaning station helped our family enjoy an entire meal of a day's catch, really cemented this time as one of our best vacation memories.
