Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday home in Arroyo Seco - Cabina Escondida

4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths. Beautiful forest alternative to the typical sage desert.

Welcome to Cabina Escondida--a peaceful haven nestled in the trees along the mountainside under Lucero Peak. It could easily be overlooked, as it blends in so well with its surroundings. It is the perfect home base for your adventures in Taos and Taos Ski Valley. Hiking trails abound, including two within a five minute walk to the trailhead (one features a seasonal waterfall).

With four bedrooms, two baths, and 1800 square feet of living area, Cabina Escondida offers both private and communal areas. A wood-burning stove serves as the heart of the spacious main living area, which is open to the kitchen and dining areas. The house also has central heat. Laundry facilities are available, and you will find utensils, dishes, dishwasher and cookware for all your culinary needs. Don’t feel like cooking?... you are only minutes from casual or fine dining options in Arroyo Seco and Taos.

The bedrooms are furnished with two queens, one king and one bunk bed. The master bedroom features an en suite bath and private deck. The other bedrooms offer fantastic valley views. A Pack-and-Play is available for infants and toddlers.

The windows are screened so that our guests may enjoy the mountain air without the pests. At night you may hear the neighbor’s horses making their rounds, or a coyote howl. Storms are especially lovely to watch from the front deck of the house.

Cell reception (AT&T) is good. Fiber connection and WiFi are available at no additional cost. TV reception is limited to streaming, and you will need your own account (Netflix, Hulu, SlingTV, etc). You can sign up for streaming services and gain immediate access at the house using the ROKU device. Some services offer a free trial subscription.

Chains or 4-wheel drive may be needed for winter access if roads are iced. A little snow...no problem

About the Owners

After searching for years for the perfect mountain getaway, we found it on our first trip to Taos in 2011. We love the natural beauty, the cultural and historical atmosphere, and especially its down-to-earth, friendly people. There is no shortage of things to do, on one’s own or as a family, and there’s a new view to appreciate every day. We hope you’ll visit and stay at Cabina Escondida and experience the Taos area for yourself.

Why John Myers chose New Mexico

This property has the feel of a mountain cabin, without the long drive up the mountain. It is convenient to both Taos Ski Valley and to the towns of Arroyo Seco and Taos for entertainment and dining.

Great property, backs up to wonderful trails on the mountain and close to Arroyo Seco

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying in this property during the last week of July, 2016. It is tucked away from most of the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas. The only traffic on the road (other than local vehicles) were hikers driving up to the El Salto Waterfall trail. If you purchase the hiking permit ($4/person) you can hike from directly behind the property to the waterfalls and beyond. Arroyo Seco has several shops for area merchandise, art, and jewelry. A small Organic grocery is available if you prefer not to drive 20-25 mins to the Taos to purchase one or two items. For basic shopping, drive to Taos; as the selection at the grocery store is limited to high end organic items. Good quality, with prices that match.

The home is a two story, with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on the 2nd floor. Be prepared to climb stairs to enter the main level of the home. With open windows, the house was nicely cooled during our stay. The kitchen well appointed for even the most serious of chefs. Coffee maker is a filter type, so if you bring k-cups, you will need to cut them open and use the grounds in the filter. All the beds were comfortable, though a bit stiffer than I am used to sleeping on. Wireless access was provided and the Roku (streaming video) very easy to use. Remember to reset the Roku before you leave...

The views are partially blocked by the abundant trees. But once you start out on the trail or drive below the treeline, the views are awesome. Should you be visiting in the winter, be prepared for steep icy roads... During the summer there is no problem driving on the dirt/gravel. Although the few washed out pot holes do make for an entertaining and bouncy ride.

A washer and dryer are located in the basement (below the kitchen); and the water pressure is good considering the location. The water heater did an excellent job keeping up with out showers (only 3 people stayed in the home on this trip). There were a few cobwebs; nothing a broom could not knock down. And the owner sent an email with great directions, including recommendations on area restaurants. I highly recommend the pizza from Piasano's... excellent for our last meal in the area.

If we are able to return to the Taos area, this will be our first choice for a place to stay.

Fantastic property, perfect for families on a budget

We stayed here 3 nights and really loved it. The property is close to Taos Ski Valley, with gorgeous views from its windows and the drive there. Every consideration is taken care of. Recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Great house in a great location

  • 4 of 5

"Cabina Escondida - a Rare Haven in the Pines" lives up to its name and billing. It is nicely hidden in the pines, just above the village of Arroyo Seco, New Mexico. There are several fantastic hikes less than 100 yards outside the front door. Numerous outstanding day hikes and walks are within 30 minutes of the house. The appliances are all new and work well. The house was clean. The beds were comfortable. We visited in mid August and enjoyed the cool nights; though, ceiling fans would have made things more comfortable during the day. There was plenty of space in the bedrooms, common areas, kitchen and grounds. The silence and stars at night were wonderful.

Great family getaway

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful house in beautiful location. The house is spacious, clean, and comfortable (great beds!). Very kid friendly--a tremendous relief to us with our 2-year-old and 4-year-old. They loved watching horses walk by outside the kitchen window (on the other side of a fence). The area is extremely quiet and secluded; although there are neighbors close by, it's easy to forget. (I do recommend arriving in daylight hours, as we did, to avoid confusion in finding it. Also note that the base price is for 4 guests, with $25 extra per person, per night, so if you are actually using all the bedrooms it will probably be more expensive. Some members of our family missed having a computer internet connection, but I understand that is in process.) Overall this was a wonderful escape from summer heat!

Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

This place was great- clean, large, comfortable, and close enough to the tiny mountain town of Arroyo Seco, which beats Taos in vibe and relaxation anytime. The waterfall hiking trail is best if started next to the house (get the permit at the green house on the dirt road that takes you up-4.00 per person- look for the huge sign) it loops back around to the house via the road. Beautiful. My only complaint was no BBQ or outdoor fire pit, which would've been nice. I will be returning for sure! Be sure to check out the Native Pueblo and the Earthships by the Gorge- both a somewhat quick ride away! Best place to stay for the money!

Directions to 214 El Salto Rd

Go north on Hwy 64 through Taos, then about 5 miles to the traffic light at Hwy 150. Take a right on Hwy 150. After about 5 miles be prepared to slow down as you enter the small town of Arroyo Seco. Go about 500 feet through Arroyo Sec. Although the road turns left, you will continue straight onto El Salto Rd. Go over 5 speed bumps and the road turns to dirt. After that, go about 0.7 miles and the road turns left and climbs. You will pass a sign that says “Dead End, No Ski Valley Access.” Go about 0.1 miles further and the road splits. At the split, there is a house close to the road on the right with the address 210 on the garage. Take the right split and the driveway is about 50 feet on the left (you will hit a gate if you pass it). The number 214 is on the side of the garage.
