Overview

About the property

4 Bedrooms With Views, 2 Baths. Sleeps 10. Open Plan Kitchen

This home is a beloved getaway on the water at the end of a private lane on Skagit Bay with access to a lovely cove beach. Casual and comfortable with a Pacific Northwest feel, it's decorated with Pendleton blankets and regional art. The well equipped kitchen includes a cuisinart, kitchenaid mixer, cast iron and caphelon pots and pans.

The house sleeps 10 in four bedrooms, each with water and island views. The downstairs master bedroom has two queen beds and is handicapped accessible. Upstairs bedrooms are furnished with one queen bed, one double bed and one twin trundle bed. Upstairs bathroom has a shower. The downstairs bath has a tub with shower and a washer and dryer.

The open plan living space includes a large extendable dining table that can seat 10 for meals with family and friends and comfortable chairs and sofas for daytime and evening lounging. Bookcases are filled with a wide range of reading choices, from field guides and cookbooks to classics of fiction and non-fiction as well as boxes of games and puzzles for family fun.

A partly covered south facing deck provides a grand view of Martha's Bay, the North Fork of the Skagit River, the Swinomish Channel and its myriad boat traffic, and the many islands of Skagit Bay. The deck offers excellent bird watching as the tides shift, with great blue herons moving onto their feeding grounds as the water recedes, and then replaced by ducks, geese, and gulls when it returns. Eagles often fish out over the bay, and before and after fishing perch in fir trees next to our house. Seals follow schools of fish as they return on incoming tides, as do families of river otters. Dot Island, just offshore, is the home and nesting site for oyster catchers, whose sharp cries can often be heard from the house. The deck has tables and chairs and a gas grill for outdoor cooking and dining. A large steel artisan made firepit in the west side yard can be used for evening fires and roasts.

Excellent bay and estuary kayaking are a short carry and a few steps down to the adjoining cove. There is a boat launch under the Rainbow bridge which is about 5 minutes away. Certain areas get very shallow at low tide so knowing the waters is a good idea. There is plenty of parking for a vehicle with a trailored boat. There is water in the cove from mid-tide and above, so tide tables must be consulted when planning trips! The cove is also an excellent place for children to explore and play under adult supervision.

The point adjacent to the cove provides a unique and commanding 270 degree view, east up the Swinomish Channel to Hole in the Wall and the entrance to La Conner, beyond to the channels of the North Fork of the Skagit, south past Goat Island to Camano Island, west to Whidby Island, and north past the Dead Man Islands and Hope Island towards the hidden passage of Deception Pass. Tides and water levels change dramatically twice a day affording ever changing views.

The home is equipped with internet/wifi, cable TV, a DVD player and a CD player/radio.

About Martin Duffy

I have been spending time in the Skagit Valley since the early 1970's and have always loved it.

Martin Duffy purchased this house in 2007

Why Martin Duffy chose Northwest Washington

We have spent time in the Skagit all our adult lives, returning summers as children have been born and grown, and now with grandchildren. We started in a one room cabin above Fishtown, graduated to an A-frame, and then to our present home. Why? The cycle of the seasons, the plowing, the planting, the harvesting, each field a painting, a sculpture on its own; the arrival of snow geese and swans; the eagles, cormorants, great blue herons; the pattern of wind waves on water; the mud. The charm of the small town of LaConner, the unbeatable seasonal fresh local food and flavors at Snow Goose Produce, our favorite place to shop. Dinner at Nell Thorn's, one of the Northwest's premier restaurants, local and regional art shows, the Museum of Northwest Art.

What makes this house unique

The water. The ever changing tides. The birds. The view. The fresh food. Proximity to hiking in the North Cascades or exploring the San Juan Islands.

Large, comfortable beach house

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our four nights at this beach house and used it as a base during our son's wedding in Mount Vernon. Being busy with activities didn't stop us from sitting on the large deck and spying eagles, dozens of other birds and watching the tides. We'd definitely return.

Comfortable cottage

  • 5 of 5

Very comfortable, homey, cottage feel! Perfect for my family style of R&R vacations. Plenty to do in the area, but really enjoyed the scenery, the eagles that played in front of us daily. Supplies were solid,, beds were comfortable,...perfect for our few days here. Looking forward to returning!

Had a wonderful time

  • 5 of 5

My sisters and I stayed here during the Tulip Festival. It was big enough for all of us to have our own beds. This is not a sparkling clean, completely updated house. So if that's what you expect, don't go there. It's an older home with tons of character. Artwork is so original, furniture comfortable, and the view! Wow. We saw all kinds of wildlife - coyote, heron, tons of shore birds. And, as we left, a bald eagle flew by right in front of us.

My sisters and I loved this house. We may come every year, the Tulip Festival being one of the best of our trips together.

Cranky but fun

  • 4 of 5

First of all, this was an ideal location for our guy's get-away (preceded by one night with just me and my wife). This is our 3rd house for our annual weekend, and everyone agrees it was the best. The living area is vast, with windows all around looking out at the weather and water, a perfect eating/game playing table, great gas fireplace, comfortable beds and lots of them, bathrooms are clean and functional, etc. There is an intentionally retro feel about the place which is very nice and so much more sensible than other overly modern vacation rentals we have been in.

The only down side to this is that the owners seem to have almost intentionally kept the place sketchy and marginal with touches like exposed fluorescent lighting, a very strange dish washer, the remains of a rusted out old BBQ on the deck (next to a usable one), a pile of rusting lawn chairs in the lawn, and a depressing view from the driveway that makes your heart sink when you pull in. While there were lots of extra food supplies in the kitchen, the utensils and overall usability of the kitchen had some issues.

But the important fact is that the place is very entertaining, comfortable for the most part, and the view and location can't be beat. There was really very little that compromised our enjoyment of our 3 nights there. Enjoy!

Owner's Response: I will have to say that I take exception to the characterization as sketchy and marginal. A previous guest broke one of the hand blown glass shades for the pair of lights with compact flourescent bulbs in them so they were taken down to be replaced. Also 4 of the 6 lawn chairs around the firepit are aluminum so they won't rust. They do sometimes get blown over in heavy winds. We have regular landscape maintenance done in the front and the back of the house so it will look attractive. The dishwasher is a portable which may not be common but I am not sure that qualifies it as strange. The kitchen although not posh does seem to be very functional. It is something at the end of this season that we will likely renovate. The old bbq has been removed. I am glad that overall though you seemed to have highly enjoyed your stay.

Unbeatable view! We plan to come back again and again!

  • 5 of 5

It's a beautiful vista - 180 degree views. Very comfortable sleeping accommodations. We are excited to invite friends and our kids next time we come. The kitchen was well stocked and easy to use. The gas oven had us guessing a bit, just not used to using them. Was a relaxing environment, lots of light and cozy. Wonderful meal at Nell Thorn's - highly recommend going there.
