Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Emerald Isle - Salty Dog

3BR/2Baths, Private Decks Off Every Bedroom, Tranquil Setting With Amazing Views

If you have never had the opportunity to stay sound side at the beach, then you don't know what a great time you are missing out on. After a hard day of fun & sun at the beach, wind down on the back deck and experience the amazing sunsets and stunning views of the Bogue sound.

While summer is in high demand, many miss the most amazing times of the year to come to the Salty Dog! Sept., Oct., and Nov., are filled with warm days, warm water, refreshing evenings, low humidity, lower traffic and great fishing!

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years are special times to spend at the coast and celebrate with family and friends. Jan and Feb are not to be forgotten months with much needed relaxing and de-stressing after the hectic holiday season and also romantic getaways for Valentine’s Day!

Our beautifully decorated home has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. It will comfortably sleep 6; with 2 queen beds and a kid friendly room which has a bunk bed that has a double bed on bottom, single on top and a trundle bed underneath. All the bedrooms have private decks with scenic views. There is a wonderful picnic area with picnic table located sound front on the sandy beach area and great place to play corn hole.

Staying sound front offers many activities that you wouldn’t be able to experience on the beach front such as; clamming, crabbing, flounder gigging, seining, bird watching, walking in the shallow waters for great distances, etc.

Our family has had many fond memories of clamming and crabbing and having a delicious clam bake with all we caught! The kids have always enjoyed catching crabs and hermit crabs.

By the sound, there is a sandy beach area, a covered gazebo in the water and stairs leading into the sound. There is also a hot/cold outdoor shower area with a separate dressing area. For those of you that would like to try some clamming or crabbing there are rakes and crab pots available for use. We will also have beach chairs, coolers, boogie boards and corn hole boards.

About Dana Franklin

The Salty Dog is named after the original “Salty Dog” my dad. He built this home in the late 70’s after years of scraping and saving! His dream was to retire early and live out the rest of his life at Emerald Isle and that he did. My dad was somewhat of a stubborn man, he weathered many hurricanes by himself and his fearless dogs! He would never evacuate even when it was mandatory! He would always tell me, “A captain must go down with his ship”. He loved this house! It would drive me crazy and worry me to death! But this house would always come out just fine and so would my dad! I grew up coming to Emerald Isle and raised my four children coming here as well. As a family, we have made so many wonderful memories in this house and now they still want to come here on vacation rather than somewhere else. My children have always brought friends with them on vacation and to this day they still talk about all the good times they had at Emerald Isle with us! When my sweet dad left this earth he passed this home to me and I decided it was time for a much needed makeover. So I gave it an overhaul and made the decision to share it with others so they could make memories of their own here. We truly feel this is a special place filled with love, happiness and fun and want others to share in this too. I know my dad is looking down with his scruffy beard and smiling! So Cheers to you Dad!!!

Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

Our summer could not have closed on a happier note than spending the week at the Salty Dog! Everything from plentiful bath towels to comfortable mattresses to crab traps, Dana has made sure that her beautiful, beachy home ensures comfort and fun for her guests! Our family particularly loves the location of Salty Dog on Emerald Isle; direct access onto Bogue Sound and a 3 minute walk to the crystal waters of the ocean. We plan to enjoy this property many more times in the future.

We had an excellent week at the salty dog. Our family of 5 loved crabbing/fishing in the sound and the short walk to the beach. This house has everything we needed, well maintained and the owner was excellent to deal with. Thank you

Convenient private location and very clean ...

  • 5 of 5

We are only 3 days back from staying at the Salty Dog and loved it! We have been going to NC beaches for 13 years and this was our first time to Emerald Isle. As I told Dana on the phone when we arrived, this was probably the cleanest house we have ever stayed in over those 13 years. We made a comment as we walked in that it smelled so clean. This was also our first time staying in a sound front home and loved the convenience of having options other than sitting on the beach. I personally loved sitting in the gazebo on the dock and reading. We were surprised there was hardly any activity on the sound all week. It was very private and quiet. We had a total of 8 in the house with 4 adults and 4 teenagers. We rented kayaks and a SUP to use on the sound. We set out the crab traps provided at the house early in the week and had enough to make crab cakes on our last night. We used a casting net to catch shrimp, which we used for bait. The walk to the beach was really easy and the beach cart was a definite plus for 8 chairs, several umbrellas, boogie boards, cooler, etc. Dana was very accommodating through everything, including when our house lost partial power on Wednesday evening. She had her electrician on call in case he needed to be there first thing Thursday morning to fix the issue, but thankfully it was something on the pole and was fixed by the electric company within a couple of hours. For meals definitely go to Rucker Johns (their homemade salad dressings are amazing), and Lazarro's Pizza (get the Godfather - 24" pizza). We took evening rides to Beaufort and Morehead City and a morning ferry ride to Shackleford Banks to see the wild ponies and found lots of conch shells.

It is definitely my "happy place" and I want to share it with others! Our perfect family getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We love the access to the sound and the ocean from this home. It is well maintained, nice grounds, and highly walkable to the beach. You are 4 houses away from the beach and we split our days between fishing and floating on the sound and searching for sea glass and playing in the surf. There is a nice bike path that leads all the way to shops and dining that is safe and easy to access by crossing the road. The home is clean and comfortable. The only complaint I'd have is that the dishwasher is mini and a challenge to use for more than about 2 people so there will need to be a mix of hand washing and dishwasher use. There is a great supply of beach towels, board games, floats, crab baskets, cart for the beach and chairs to make sure you don't need to bring that with you. When we got a little too much sun we broke up our visit with a trip to the aquarium and a 30 min. drive to Beaufort for shopping, dining and a sweet small town feel. Bring a suit and sunscreen and relax into a great vacation with a wonderful host!

Vacation at the Salty Dog

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at several places in Emerald Isle but this was the best. The short walk to the beach with all the equipment and beach stuff house made it easy. The dock allowed for fishing and crabbing at all hours. The gazebo was the perfect place to watch the sunrise and sunset. The house is very well equipped and super comfortable. Dana was wonderful and kind to work with. This was a wonderful vacation home and we would love to go back. I would highly recommend this property at any time of the year!

Three cheers for the Salty Dog!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Salty Dog and what a wonderful one it was! E.I. is our home away from home for 23 years now (one of our dogs are named Bogue after our favorite sound) :). A week on the sound in Salty Dog will leave you relaxed, refreshed and wanting more. Our first impression is that the sound greets you as you enter and take your first look out the glass doors. All you can see is water, so relaxing! The home is very comfortable and impeccably clean. I'm a foodie, so finding the kitchen well stocked was a huge plus! The only thing I brought was my food processor and my favorite cast iron pan. Dana really has put a lot of thoughts into what a family staying there would like to use. The availability of coolers, beach chairs, outdoor games. and a beach cart is such a plus. Crab pots provided entertainment and the little private beach is perfect! We buried a few seashells in the sand for our 2 year old grandson to find and take home. We brought our own 8 seater floating island that we anchored in the sound and enjoyed floating and sipping the day away. :) One of my favorite finds was reading the little book left by Dana telling the story of the Salty Dog. Your dad was lucky enough to fulfill his dream of building a home to bring family together in his very special place. My wish some day! The pictures of the history and family times spent there were wonderful. Morning walks on the beach were a couple mintues away with the beach access right across the street. Added some finds to my sea glass collection! Weather was perfect with the exception of one wicked lightening storm one night. Gotta say in all my years I've been through a few good storms down here but this was one of the most crazy lightening ones we've seen. Fun to watch it from the safety of Salty Dog though! :) Never missed a night of watching the beautiful sunset go down over dinner from the deck with the exception of one night where we dined at our very favorite restaurant Amos Mosquitoes. Thank you Dana for sharing your family home and little piece of heaven with us. We will be back next year!
