Beautifully renovated Artist's farmhouse in Provence, large heated pool & Sauna

Bedrooms 8
Space 4,090 sq. ft.
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Large house with 7/9 double bedrooms and 7 en suite bathrooms. sleeps 14/18

The house has a little history which is nice to tell. My mother was married to Curd Jurgens for 19 years, before meeting my Greek father. Curd Jurgens was a quite famous Hollywood actor back in the days, playing in moves like ("Michel Strogoff", "The Inn of the sixth happiness", "Battle of Britain", "The spy who loved me", "The enemy below", "And God created Woman" and many more). When they separated, my mother bought this beautiful farmhouse and started renovating it with my father. Then I was born, and we lived there for 9 years. We’ve had many famous visitors, friends of my mother’s from the glamorous times when she was married to Curd. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Maria Schell, Giacometti, Leonard Cohen, Romy Schneider, Herbert Von Karajan and many more came for a relaxed time in the Provence…

La Madone is Eco friendly, which means we use only organic detergeants, organic soaps, organic disinfectants, No synthetic material, and the pool is cleaned by saline technology so it is chlorine free.

The house is a beautiful renovated provencal farmhouse, in the middle of 7ha of vineyards and fruit trees, completely isolated, with a private road to access the house and no neighbors.

As both my parents were artists, the house is done the way they wanted it, simple, comfortable, rustique and with a lot of character.

The house is 380sqm and has 6 provencal style double bedrooms, some with fireplace in the rooms, all 6 with ensuite bathrooms and WC.

There is also 1 bedroom with bunk beds for children, and another office-library room, next to the master bedroom, just under the roof with 2 single beds. From this room you can access the small terrace on the roof with a beautiful 360 degree view across the vineyards and Roussillon village.

There is an extra studio that is available at an extra cost if you are a big family, that can sleep 2 people.

The sauna has a small room, very fresh, excellent for siestas.

The living room is a 100sqm space, with high Provençal ceiling, and a very large fireplace. The kitchen is fully equipped, with professional gas stove and 2 professional ovens, 2 refrigerators, 1 freezer, microwave, 2 dishwashers etc. HI-FI with CD player + ipod input, Cable TV, Fast WIFI internet, DVD player.

The inside dining room seats 14-16 people comfortably. The outside table seats also 14-16 people. You can enjoy the morning sun having your breakfast on the outside table, with the view on the garden and on the valley.

The terrace is a great place to relax during the day and/or have an “aperitif” before dinner.

There is also an outside table and a built-in barbecue, ideal for a great lunch and barbecue cooking. Bbq table sits also 14-16 people.

The garden in front of the house is great for the children. A Table tennis is also available, and a court to play "Petanque", the national sport of the South of France!

The swimming pool is salt technology, so chlorine free. It can be heated if requested. It is a large swimming pool - 14m long and 6 meter large, and great space around the pool to relax, with benches with mattresses and teak lounge chairs. There is also a stone table at the pool, with a metal built roof for the shade, great for a little lunch around the pool.

The cellar is also at your disposal, with our sommelier's selection of beautiful regional and French reds, whites and rosés. The temperature is between 14-17 and the humidity is at 75%, which is ideal for keeping wines! We call it the honesty bar, meaning you take what you want, and leave the corresponding amount on the table. We trust you!

Some great activities are available, such as professional masseur, pottery courses, cycling rentals, horse riding, hot air balloon rides and many other activities can be arranged in advance.

Cooking services are also available, (Nadege is probably, and without joke one of the best private chefs in the region, she cooks beautifully, and uses organic products from local markets, cheese from the traiteur “Gouin” in Coustellet, meat from the best butcher in the region called “Isnard” in Goult, fresh fish that come every week from Marseille, I do recommend her for a few dinners, you will remember me! and I also recommend her Tarte Tatin for dessert!).

Cooking lessons with Nadege are great too. Our past guests have absolutely loved the experience!

Christine is also a great sommelier, and she can come and give you a wine tasting with explanation in all the processes of making wine. A great experience too! And with Nadege they often combine their strength and offer a super nice lunch or dinner.

Roussillon is classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France. It is in the middle of the Provence, in the Luberon. It is well known for its red ocred canyons. The village has many restaurants, cafes, a castle, an art gallery, souvenir shops, pottery shops, and all the houses are red coloured by the ocres, as you can see on the photo in the site. There is also a supermarket, grocery store, a pharmacy, a post office, a very good butcher, a cash dispenser and a very nice farmer's market and delicatessen market every Wednesday. The house is 900m (0.55 miles) from Roussillon.

Beautiful villages are few kilometers away from the house. Villages such as Gordes (known for the stone houses and the Vasarély Museum), Menherbes, Goult, Bonnieux, Lacoste (with the Marquis de Sade's castle), Buoux, Baux de Provence, Lourmarin, Isle-sur-la Sorgue (with the internationally famous antique market on Sundays, don't miss it!), Fontaine de Vaucluse (with its 100 feet deep water spring), Eygalières et les Alpilles (with the famous Chappelle St-Sixte), Saint-Remy de Provence (where Nostradamus, Van-Gogh and princess Caroline de Monaco now lives!), Sainte Maries de la mer et la Camargue (The beach!), Avignon (le palais des papes, le pont d’Avignon, le festival d’Avignon in July) Arles (and the “Arènes d’Arles” for bull fighting supporters) and many other beautiful landscapes and villages to see. We will tell you all there is to know about the area, according to your taste and wishes.

Some activities in the area that we can help you organize include:

1. Bicycle rides

2. Trekking

3. Horse riding

4. Tennis in Roussillon and Joucas

5. Pottery courses

6. Massage

7. Restaurants gastronomiques – (Ask us for the list before you arrive!)

8. Visits of chateaux and wine domaines – Ask us for suggestions and/or our friend Abdel if you need a guide to take you to the right places!

9. Visit of the “Ocres” factory in Roussillon + courses and workshops -

10. Hot air balloon ride -

11. Canoe-Kayak on the Rhone -

12. Traditional farmer’s market in the region, in different villages according to the days of the week

About Vanya

Stelios Pavlidis (my father), was a Greek film and theater director. Very in love with my mother Simone, they bought this old farm in 1975, the year I was born, and started working on it, and, as most artists do, renovated it the way they had imagined it. Simple, comfortable, rustique and with a lot of character. They lived there for 9 beautiful years. My father went into writing, and going back and forth in Athens for his work. My mother, after having had a very active social life (As she was married with a famous hollywood actor called Curd Jurgens for 19 years), and in great need of serenity and simplicity, brought me up, and started doing pottery courses, organic farming, animal breeding, wine making and many other simple manual activities.

Vanya purchased this farmhouse in 1975

Why Vanya chose World

Beauty, simplicity, character, retreat, and ideal for children are few of the words that best describe the property. The house has a soul, from the love that my parents have put into renovating it. We've had many architects, decorators, artists, friends coming to the house, and all of them felt something special and unique about it. The surroundings are also quite impressive. It's not common to find a house like this surrounded by nature, without any neighbours, quiet and serene, where one can run around naked without being bothered!!!. My parent's style and taste are also well represented in this house, keeping the provencal style but adding stylish touches, influenced by their artistic background and various travels around the world.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Dear Vanya

My apologies for the delay. Since coming back from France Dan and I have been putting off real life for as long as we can!!!

However holidays are over and it's back to work we go.

I cannot begin to tell you how utterly incredible our wedding day and whole week was. Everything looked so beautiful, you are right, it really was breathtaking. You are blessed to have such a beautiful house, Dan and I feel a very very strong connection with La Madone after the wonderful memories made there. Our week after was excellent also and the children just adored the space! I've never seen them so relaxed.

We have quite a few photos but I am struggling to send them in one email. I will get them to you ASAP. The official photos will be be back in 4-6 weeks and these may be good for you to use also.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for enabling us to have such a wonderful day. We will never forget your kindness.

Nadege is something else. She is our new found family and was adored by everyone- my Dad even got her on the dance floor! It was brilliant. We already cannot wait to go back next year to visit her.

Thank you again and I will be in touch with the pictures.

Much love

Great location but would not recommend the apartment.

  • 2 of 5

We rented this property for a week this July. The location cannot be beat - the neighboring towns were some of the best we found. The configuration of the rooms is a little difficult for families with small children but we also got the separate apartment to help with this. The house was clean and efficient. The only issue, in this regard, we had was with the cleanliness of the apartment. The first night both adults and the baby staying in the unit were bitten by spiders. The bites got large and swollen and the babies tights blistered because they were on his face. They were large spiderwebs and cobwebs in all the corners of the room. They were also spiders and spider eggs under the other side table but everything else was cleaned by us. After we brought it to the caretakers attention she did speak to the midweek cleaners who did then clean it. We also had a problem with ants in two of the rooms making them inhabitable in spite of no food being in the room and using ant poison (at one point there were hundreds of ants in the baby's cot and we just didn't want to use the room anymore). However we know this is a farm like setting so there will be some bugs! The only other issue we had was a sulfur smell coming from one of the bathrooms. It was so bad we were unable to use the two neighboring rooms for several of the nights but a plumber was called out eventually. While we really loved the property this was a little disappointing for us.

As far as seclusion, which was important for us, note there is a caretaker on the grounds. While we were told we would not see her unless we wanted to she had company over while we were there which was a little awkward for us. Also on two separate occasions while we were in the pool we had workers that showed up without warning to work 5 feet from the pool which was also a little uncomfortable - especially since they just showed up surprising us.

Other than that the house was really lovely and the location cannot be beat!

A wonderful week with friends!

  • 5 of 5

We are a group of friends who spend a week together in an interesting place/country about every four years. This is our fourth adventure together. La Madone is located right up the road from what was Les Reys, where we stayed in 2001, near the charming town of Roussillon. It is a perfect location to explore the hill towns of Provence and extend our investigations to the entire Luberon area of the Vaucluse Provence.

The property has a main house which included bedrooms and bathrooms for each of the 5 couples, and a couple of extra bedrooms we didn't use. It has a workable kitchen with plenty of plates, silverware, glasses, and cooking pans which we used when we prepared our traditional themed dinners, on two nights; and where the chef prepared us a delicious meal one night. The refrigerator is ample plus a spare refrigerator, a frozen frig, and a wine cellar for all of the food and drinks necessary for a fun week. Two dishwashers make it a breeze to clean up! The stove/oven is a good one, too. There are also several areas with large tables inside and outside, so choosing the perfect spot to dine adds to the enjoyment. The swimming pool, just a short walk from the house was a life-saver after a hot day of sight-seeing; a natural gathering place. We did not need to use the Artist's Studio.

Our host, Nadege, was a sweetheart and helped us understand the washing machine as well as the general household functions. She also secured the chef, Peter, to cook us one dinner, which was delicious! She was always available, if we needed another tutorial on how to do something.

The property representative, Vanya, gave us a great list of restaurants in the area, as well as suggestions of things to do.

The villa was charming and was kept clean and maintained, so we all felt it was truly our home away from home. There was plenty of room and conversational places to sit and view the surroundings and/or read/talk. We would all recommend it to other groups for a fun place to spend a week together.

Magic Christmas Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Yvan, for being a wonderful host and for allowing us to spend two weeks over Christmas in your beautiful home. It was the place that long lasting family and friend's memories were made together. Who says Provence isn't four seasons? Part of our family went up to ski for the day (Les Orres) more than once. We visited breathtaking villages and hiked in the gorgeous Cedar Forest. Everything that we could have ever needed was available in your home. Nothing was missing for us to entertain through the holidays. Thank you for the perfect recommendation of a chef ... he was first class. The cleaning staff was also exceptionally helpful (our 6 year old hid one of the house keys in a very obscure place and while the family looked for it for 2 days, they found it in 5 minutes). Your home is perfect and it was obvious from the start it has a heart of it's own. A bientôt

A lovely spacious farmhouse, artistically furnished, and perfect for an extended family holiday.

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a lovely holiday at La Madone. The house and accommodation and the pool and garden were perfect for our extended family reunion. We were ten adults and five children under seven and we had a really happy week together. The pool for us was a highlight of the week. It is attractive, spacious, and well furnished with loungers. We were initially concerned about safety with so many small children but the pool is slightly out of sight and away from the rest of the garden and so going to it was 'an event', and it was easy to supervise and provided many hours of fun.

We loved the pizza oven and enjoyed the number of outdoor tables for eating in different and lovely parts of the patios and garden! Nadège cooked for us for three of the evenings and that was a real treat. It's not a cheap option but the cooking is excellent and Nadege provided delicious food and generous quantities.

The house is much more extensive than the photos can show, and there are bedrooms off a number of different areas which allows for plenty of choice.

We would love to return sometime!

A totally charming property which lived up to every expectation.

  • 5 of 5

La Madone was the perfect venue for Kate & David's wedding blessing ceremony and reception (legally married in Cartmel Priory England two weeks previously). We rented the property for two weeks; the wedding being on the middle Saturday. The farmhouse and studio easily accommodated 20 - the bride and groom, both sets of parents, both brothers, 3 bridesmaids and partners, the best man and several close family members. This is a very spacious property with a beautiful traditional provencale ambience. All guests were delighted with their rooms some of which are en-suite. The exterior seating areas and pool (spotlessly clean) provide a wonderful selection of both shaded areas and opportunities to enjoy the sun. Despite there being so many of us we never felt on top of each other. There is provision for exterior dining for many people and the kitchen and equipment provided more than adequately catered for all of our needs. The proximity of Apt with its local market, supermarket and wine merchants was a great asset. La Madone was an incredible setting for the wedding. The ceremony was held within the vineyard with stunning views of the hills beyond. Guests were thrilled and amazed as they were welcomed through the archway into the garden area where eight large tables (seating 70) with traditional provencale decorations were set around a tree on the lawn. Following the champagne reception a wonderful barbeque was prepared and served by Gerald Konings, an extremely talented local chef and his team. We were entertained by an incredibly charismatic band, the Troubadours, who visited every table and engaged all of the guests and started the evening's dancing. Clark, a very talented local DJ took over the music and dance floor until the early hours. We would like to sincerely thank Nadege for her invaluable assistance beforehand in sourcing the suppliers and advising on the practicalities of the event. This was a truly amazing experience for all of those involved. We shall all treasure our memories of our summer at La Madone in 2017.

The Provence is the region of Paul Cezanne. It is the region of excellent olive oil. Cezanne chose this region also because of it's wonderful mixtures of colours and landscapes. It is also the region of lavender fields and sunflowers. Many many little villages around, all unique. Roussillon with the ocre canyon, Gordes with the stone houses, Eygalieres with the Chapelle Saint Sixte, Lacoste with a marvellous castle, Fontaine de Vaucluse with the water falls, Maussanne with its marvellous olive oil, and many many other beautiful villages to visit.
