From the end of the driveway, you can access the river for swimming. The shoreline is rocky, so water shoes are recommended.
Highmeadow has been in our family for 5 generations and we were lucky enough to buy it recently from our parents. Great Grandmother Sally built it as her summer, family home. It has seen a lot of dinner parties on the lawn, bike rides to town and the lighthouse, and wet towels on the line. We are thrilled to share it's history with you and hope you make as many memories as we have and still do! Kim, Spencer, Isabelle and Lilly

Charming and relaxing. Swim, kayak, bike, relax. Enjoy the quiet of Tibbitts Point Road and the charm of the house that is full of history and leave all your worries behind. After a week at Highmeadow pace, you will be invigorated and won't want to leave!
4 beautiful vintage bikes for our guests to use. The river right at the end of the driveway. Perfect location for the avid biker with spectacular, quiet roads around Cape Vincent and on Wolf Island to explore for hours.
This cottage is one of our favorite places to relax. The peace and quiet and slow pace of the Cape Vincent area add years to your life!! The cottage has everything you would ever need and is clean, has a great layout for different couples or families and sits overlooking the water!. We walk to the lighthouse every night and use the great bikes to ride to town for coffee in the morning. There is no rush in doing anything! The lawn furniture stays out front for the entire week so at the end of a great day, we relax some more overlooking the river. Could not find a better set up for our young grandchildren either!! It is magical!. The owners cell phone is listed but there was never a need to call. Paradise! Thanks for sharing this lovely place with us!! We will definitely return again. The Rundle clan.
This was a great house to stay in with an amazing location! It is right on the water which is easy to access and great for swimming or kayaking. There were four great bikes which our family used to bike to town or the lighthouse which are both about a 10 minute ride. We also biked to Kingston in Canada for the day. It was a beautiful bike ride and was easy and fun to take the ferry across! The house was adorable with comfortable beds!
I'll start with what I think is the best feature: the huge front lawn and meadow that gives you privacy! You aren't right up against the road and traffic passing by seems far far away.
We held my daughter's wedding here and it was the perfect low-key place for it. The big lawn meant there was plenty of space to set up tables and a tent. And the backdrop of the meadow and river couldn't have been more perfect.
Also great for families with kids since you can let them run around outside without worrying that they'll run into the road traffic.
Recently returned from a week "on the River" and enjoyed my best week of the year there. The weather was hot and humid, which is what we prefer for the outdoor activities, but there is air conditioning available for the really warm nights. Most nights it was delicious to leave all of the doors and windows open to enjoy the cool night air and to listen to the coyotes howling out on Tibbetts Point and the large freighters going up and down the river. We enjoyed dining out most nights at area restaurants from Sacketts Harbor, Chaumont, Cape Vincent, Clayton and Alexandria Bay. Excellent food, amazing atmosphere and great music. There is so much to enjoy in the area and it's less than 2 hours to the Adirondack Mountains for a day trip. There's just so much more there than advertised by the owners and the history of the area is incredible. I was so sorry to read of the difficulties suffered by one of the guests. Cape Vincent is somewhat of a primitive area, by most standards, and things can go wrong. But, it also part of what creates the "days gone by" charm there. At least there is now "city water" which diminishes a lot of adventures from the past use of the river water. Looking forward to out next visit with plans to bring kids and grand kids. They'll entertain themselves. Loved the trip!
High Meadow could have been a delightful place to spend a week with our family. Unfortunately, a series of miscommunications between the renters and VRBO (the dates of our stay were incorrectly listed), the house keepers (they had difficulty getting into the house necessitating breaking a screen which created an avenue for flies to enter and could not get in to the guest cottage to clean thus leaving us a room that we had to clean and make the bed), the plumber (who didn't change a filter and left us with a trickling shower) and us (only getting important information after we had to ask multiple times and then with key parts coming at the last minute). Add to these inconveniences, the house descriptions failure to note the dining area was in the breezeway, screened but open, making for chilly breakfasts but with a great view.
We were disappointed. In all honesty, I think we should have been offered some money back. Our other VRBO stay was highlighted but an extremely responsive owner, High Meadow's contacts were far less responsive. The cleaning lady who came 5-days into our stay with a stapler to fix the screen but not to clean complained about the poor communications. The plumber who also came 5-days into our stay to fix the shower seemed to be aware there was a problem. The property is for sale and that might have some impact on that was going on.
With all that said, we still had an enjoyable week. High Meadow is in a wonderful place, an easy walk to the lighthouse or into Cape Vincent which offers restaurants, ice cream, a museum and the ferry to Wolfe Island (Canada). We had our own bikes; using the house bikes (as suggested by the owner) to cross Wolfe Island? Well let's say one must be a strong cyclist. Also, the ferry departure to Kingston and the Canadian mainland was moved about 3 miles farther due to construction so it is a 10 mile ride. Don't forget you have to come back. The wind could make any bike ride a challenge-- one way!
The garage has outdoor games besides the bikes and a nice kayak (one-seat).
Who ever oversees High Meadow seems a bit disorganized and inattentive to detail which, at least for us, downgraded what should have been an excellent vacation to a fair. However, in all fairness to the house and the area the potential for excellence is there.
This was one of our favorite houses that we have rented. It was clean and neat. We loved using the kayak. We biked to the light house very morning then to town for coffee and breakfast. We were in the water every other minute of the day! Just far enough out of town. The view is perfect and we were so relaxed by the end of the week. Great setup..separate bed and bath..for Grandma and Grandpa!
