Our 3 bdrm., 21/2 bath home is located on the top of a ridge overlooking the jungle with panoramic views of the ocean coastline. It is only 7 minutes to the palm tree lined beach of Playa Carrillo which is considered to be one of the jewels of Costa Rica. There is a vast array of wildlife including many different birds and butterflies. We are frequently visited by a marauding band of howler monkeys, several of the mothers are usually carrying their young. If you are an early riser you will be able to catch some of the most spectacular sunrises. Not a bad way to start your day! Lots to explore and do. Many great restaurants in Carrillo and also in neighboring Samara.
What a view! Wildlife and ocean vistas abound. Since our last visit, the owners added an AMAZING covered patio right next to the pool. Our family spent lots of time swimming, reading, relaxing at Casa Sonora in-between trips to Samara/Carrillo beaches.
World class vacation home here! My two young boys are already asking when we're coming back.
This home, especially the family area, master bedroom and outside patio is positively gorgeous. It is nestled into the side of a mountain alongside two other houses. It looks out over the top of the jungle. About (2 mi) 3 km away, the views of the ocean are dreamy--much more beautiful than in the photos. The house is furnished with a decorator's eye. The mosaic floor tiles, the gecko tiles in the master shower, the beautiful hand-decorated plates in the kitchen, the comfortable leather sofa, all come together to say luxury. Waking up in the king size bed in a room with vaulted ceilings and seeing the ocean was a great way to start the day.The pool was crystal clear. I loved the outdoor hammock and outdoor furniture for having coffee and watching the sunrise. The monkeys and coatis were all around, along with birds that looked like toucans.
To answer the VRBO suggested review writing tips: The listing description was accurate although I did not realize how close two houses on each side were. The property was very clean and very well-maintained. The owner did provide great customer service. I would absolutely recommend this property to friends and relatives. The activities I enjoyed were sitting in the beach chair the owner provided at Carrillo when I wanted solitude and Samara when I wanted to people watch. I prefer the sodas, not restaurants, for having dinner. They are run by Ticos and usually have fish caught the same day. You have to be a little brave since locals frequent the sodas and the menus are in Spanish. Two of my favorites are La Perla and Colochos. I heard from locals that La Plaza Soda in Carrillo was very good, too. You will find mostly tourists at Gusto Beach and Lo Que Hay in Samara. That's okay if you do not speak any Spanish because their menus are usually just in English.
You WILL need four wheel drive to reach the property as it sits up high on a narrow rutted dirt road. It is about 2 miles (3 km) to the closest beach which is Carrillo. Playa Carrillo is a palm-lined white sand beach with no amenities. It is stunning. The next beach is Samara which has all the restaurants and shops. It is another 5 miles (8 km) from Carrillo so 7 mi from the house. Samara is where all the action is.
I loved the house and did not mind the driving, so I am going back in March. That says how much I enjoyed Casa Sonora.
This house is absolutely amazing. The kitchen is well equipped and each of the three bedrooms is comfortable. More than that however...THE VIEWS! My personal favorite part of my family's Costa Rican adventure: waking up each morning in Casa Sonora's sumptuous master suite and watching the forest below come to life! The sunlight quite literally spilling into the valley...illuminating sparkling oceans, trees...I'm having trouble finding words for how special this was.
My two young boys (ages 8 and 5) absolutely LOVED the pool. When the family wasn't out at the beach or exploring the charming nearby towns, we were sitting by the pool. Swimming, reading, eating, watching, listening...
The owners of this property bent over backwards to make sure that we were comfortable. We didn't arrive at the house until well past dark. Diane brought over a few boxes of mac n' cheese and some sliced up watermelon for us so that we didn't have to take our travel-weary boys down the mountain to a restaurant. Can't tell you how much that helped us out!
We had a few opportunities to chat with Diane and Bob about some of their adventures in Costa Rica. Their advice on what to do, where to shop, etc was always spot on. More than that though, their genuine love and passion for Costa Rica shows everywhere. You're not just renting a vacation property here...you're renting a home.
Ohh...renting a 4x4 SUV is probably a good idea. The climb up to Casa Sonora can be a bit exciting!
This is a lovely and well equipped home very high up in the hills with amazing views of Playa Cameronal and peek-a-boo views of Playa Carrillo. All the views are to the south and as a result the pool is able to warm up during the day to a very comfortable temperature. There are all kinds of utensils, appliances, towels, games, movies and accessories. We immediately felt at home.
We boogie-boarded and swam at Carrillo every day. (With boogie boards provided with the house.)
We made it a point to be home each afternoon at about 4:00 PM in the hopes of seeing afternoon visitors; Howlers and the Toucansillos (mini-toucans). Parrots and parakeets visited each morning and late afternoon. Woodpeckers and other birds were common. Hawks and vultures soared right over the house. We saw coatimundis, night-hawks and foxes on the road up to the house in the mornings and evenings. Hummingbirds were regulars. Geckos were everywhere, eating the small insects who flew near them.
The house was cleaned but the cleaner missed the coffee in the filter of the coffee-maker. No biggee. The previous guests should have taken care of that themselves. I recommend the cleaner give the house a real 'deep' vacuuming whenever he/she cleans up to address the dry-season dust. But it really wasn't a concern.
It was nice not to have to worry about condiments, which were plentiful.
There was WiFi and it was functional and worked for NetFlix (which we sometimes watched on a computer as we swam in the pool).
It was recommended we rent a 4x4 to make it up the steep dirt road but I have no doubt that driving carefully, I would have made the trip in my civic. However the 4x4 is required if you want to do any real exploring in the area. In fact, we even got to cross a river. One more check on the bucket list.
This house is part of a small and tight community. We were immediately welcomed by John and Rosie. They invited us to their pre-Christmas party which we enjoyed immensely!
The views are spectacular, the forest right there and the pool amazing. Stars blazed each night.
We saw as much wild-life from the pool as we did on our charters; but closer!
We would return in a heartbeat.
Thanks Diane and Bob!
It was a trip of a life time. And the villa was even more than we expected. There was 5 in our party and 2 were girls ages 10 and 12. It was perfect for all. Casa Sonora looks over the Pacific and the view was breath taking every morning/night and there was a lighting storm every night to put you asleep. It gives the full Costa Rican experience. The sound the howler monkeys make is un-real and you hear them a lot and they visit in the trees that are close to the house. The villa has it all and you feel very safe on the hill. Make sure to rent ATV's in town and really enjoy the area. We cooked a lot of meals and the kitchen was the focal point. It had everything we needed. All the beaches we went to were awesome. The Tico' s (locals) were all very nice and the whole area is user friendly. We went in the Green season and it was great. Monteverde is a must. Stay 2 days there. Casa Sonora is about 1 1/2-2 hrs away but the drive is easy and you see awesome country side. The house was spic and span and you feel right at home the minute you walk in. We are planning now when we can get back.
