A ¼ mile drive leads to a newly renovated mid century modern house nestling in a pretty hollow with a large pond and a stream, surrounded by beautiful woodland and marsh lands. A bird lover's paradise, this is a wonderful hideaway, with direct access from our land to the Appalachian Trail and the Pawling Nature reserve. The only sounds you will hear are the birds and the cicadas, and an occasional distant train. This is a new renovation of a light-filled 1900 sq ft mid-century modern home, with decking surrounding the house and huge floor to ceiling windows/doors, overlooking the pool, garden, pretty trees, stream and pond. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, separate office, which could be used as an additional bedroom. Kitchen/dining room. Separate loo downstairs. Living room with huge log fire. Outdoor swimming pool. Awning the length of the front of the house with a large outdoor table to seat 12 on one deck and another table to seat 8 on the other side. Wonderful for kids to be able to run free in the garden and the woodlands.
We're a British family who've been living in Manhattan for the past nearly seven years. Graeme is a photographer with a passion for doing up houses. Jennie looks after everything else. Our two children are Victory (age 5) and Grace (16 months).
Jennie Withers purchased this house in 2013
We scoured everywhere within a 2ish hour drive of our home in Manhattan, looking for a special weekend place where we could really get away from the noise & bustle of the city and enjoy being in nature. We were also looking for something that needed some TLC, which we could enjoy restoring and transforming into something special. We stumbled across this hidden corner of Dutchess county almost by accident, and fell in love with this sweet spot. A true hideaway and utterly peaceful, amidst so much beautiful nature and all the flora and fauna of the nearby nature reserve. We loved the way the house is nestled in a hollow with open space around it, and the decking surrounding the house. The house had good bones but needed a complete restoration to bring it back to life. The garden and land have been left to run wild for a long time, but we are uncovering many beautiful trees, a gorgeous stream that runs through the garden and a huge pond.
Total peace - absolutely no road noise; total privacy - hidden away on 35 acres; beautiful nature; the feeling of just being able to relax and do nothing there; the inside/outside feeling of the light-filled house - so you feel amongst nature even when inside; gorgeous views; the pretty stream and the beautiful spring-fed pond; being able to walk directly from the house through the woods, and direct access to the Appalachian Trail and the Pawling Nature Reserve trails; amazing birds and wildlife; that the children can run free in the garden and in the woods; the light and spacious feel to the mid-century modern house, which we've renovated to stay true to it's original style whilst being completely comfortable; the surround deck and the swimming pool; the huge log fire and feeling cosy in the winter; the feeling of being 'away from it all' whilst only a 90 minute drive to NYC.
The house is even better than in the photos...the endless beautiful green grounds and sparkling clean pool and wrap around deck with ample seating was where we spent most of our time. The house is stylishly decorated, light, airy and comfortable and every amenity is covered. We used the fireplace and fire pit and there was more than enough wood provided. The minute you start driving up the long driveway and start to make sight of the house you know you are in a private oasis. We had 2 children with us who at 5 years old loved exploring the grounds, and would not get out of the pool. The pool is gated and secure so no worries about them getting in when adults not around. The house and the grounds make for a very relaxed and easy time for everyone. We only left the house twice ..once to go to the Pawling Farmers Market which was a fun trip to get fresh veggies etc for dinner and cute town. We also went to Sherman and had lunch at the American Pie Company which Jennie suggested and was good but come hungry as large portions.
Dealing with Jennie the home owner was always easy and organized and she was happy to answer any questions.
I highly recommend this house and hoping we can come back next summer.
Great place if you want a convenient getaway from the City with complete peace and relaxation. House is comfortable and light-filled; pool is fantastic.
We loved staying at the property during 4th of July weekend. We really lucked out! It was exactly the getaway we needed from NYC and hit everything on our list: grill, pool, lounge chairs for relaxing, fire pit and under 2 hours from Brooklyn. From the get-go the owner was incredibly communicative and sincere. We felt a great trust level with them; and so when we rounded the long driveway towards the house we were ecstatic at how spacious and gorgeous the property was. The house inside and out looked exactly like the photos and any nuances (not many) were communicated up front so we had zero surprises. The rooms were simple and stylishly done and exceptionally clean and updated. We were impressed by the master bedroom in particular which has a wonderful view and felt private. The grounds were beautiful- perfect for a picnic on the grass. We took advantage of the great fire pit. The grill was easy to work. We enjoyed cooking, baking, and dining outside on the picnic table over candlelight. The pool was perfect as were the lounge and adirondack chairs. There is a great supermarket that has practically everything, less than a 20 min drive (Hannaford). The village of Pawling is very cute and has a nice farmers market which we went to (but got there too late for the great bread, which sold out fast apparently), and a good bookstore especially for children. It wasn't too far a drive to also check out the Vanderbilt mansion and FDR library in Hyde Park, and we took advantage of the fairly new drive-in in Amenia (Four Brothers). If given the chance we would absolutely love to come back and stay here again.
The house and property are perfect -- exactly as advertised. The house has the look and feel of a cabin, but it's clearly been recently renovated. Very clean, nice furniture, comfy beds, etc. The property is incredible with a long driveway leading to a big lawn, a pond, a brook, and views of the mountains. Definitely has the feel of being hours from NYC even though it's a pretty quick drive. There's also a nice hike through the woods to the Appalachian Trail. My wife and I absolutely plan on going back -- especially in the summer when we can take advantage of the pool. They wrapped a deck around the house with lots of sliding doors, one of which leads right to the pool. Really cool setup that I imagine is awesome in the summer.
A short walk through the woods to the appalachian trail, this hideaway feels nestled in the wilderness though only 10 minutes from the Metro North train. Wake up to coffee on the deck overlooking a large sloping lawn with ornamental trees and a tiny stream running through one side. Charming towns in the Hudson Valley and Western CT are a short drive. Recently renovated, the house is beautifully and comfortably furnished with an uncluttered modern esthetic. Jennie & Graeme were so nice and a pleasure to work with. We had a wonderful time with our family of five and would recommend to friends.
Access to Appalachian Trail and the Pawling Nature Reserve from the property.
Quaker Lake nearby.
