About Mr. Gene & Jean Ohlmann.

I grew up in Louisville, went to St.Denis,Valley,High School,University of Louisville for a short time after I got out of the United States Marine Corp. Bought a lot on Rough River in 1990,lived in camper and small cabin for a couple of years till I met Jean Marie. Jean loved the lake and after we married , we talked of moving to the lake. When JEAN retired a little while later we made the final decision and in 1999 we moved to the lake.

Mr. Gene & Jean Ohlmann. purchased this chalet in 1990

Why Mr. Gene & Jean Ohlmann. chose Kentucky

Jean and I were married on this property in 1996 on the gazebo I built over looking the lake. I bought this lot our home sits on in 1990 as a place to get away. I met Jean in 1992 at age 57 and we took a drive to the country.Jean loves the country as much as I and I have always had a dream of sharing our property with others. It has been a long time in coming, but GOD is always faithful and for 20 years I have wanted to build a cabin or small house to share with others. In about 2004 Jean and I were blessed to buy the lot next to ours and my dreams and blessings began to take shape. The lot next to our house had a burned out cabin on it and the yard was a boulder field, I mean the size of a refrigerator and up along with an old septic system and too many trees to talk about. After some two and one half years of working with the corp of Engineers my first plan took shape, Cut a road to the lake, but how, three or four people and a couple road people told me it could not be done. Well GOD had a plan and I had a couple of wonderful friends, Larry Mattingly and August Henning who I am so blessed to know. With Larry doing the brain work and August and his son doing the digging, out came the trees, up came the huge rocks and as I watched with tears in my eyes in two days I had a road to the lake. NOW THE REST OF THE STORY! In 2013 I was able to start my dream of 20 years, a guest house to rent and share with our friends.

What makes this chalet unique

There are several Unique features to our property that I believe are not available any where else on the lake. We can accommodate a couple looking for a quiet romantic get a way, or a large family get together. The Chalet will sleep 6 adults, plus 2 children in the loft. We have 2 campers, each will sleep 2 to 4. Tent area and 20 to 50 amp hook up.

The road we have that goes all the way to the edge of the water is a real blessing. NO STEPS to climb, rocks, or trees in your way. The slope is gentle enough for elderly folks,(like us)to walk. The road is from about 8 ft. to 12 ft. wide and we take our golf cart to the turn around at the water's edge. NO OFF ROAD VEHICLES OF ANY TYPE ARE ALLOWED TO BE USED OVER THE HILL. IF YOU BRING A OFF ROAD VEHICLE, IT MUST BE USED ONLY ON PAVED ROADWAYS. PLEASE COMPLY TO HELP US MAINTAIN A GOOD STANDING WITH THE CORP OF ENGINEERS. THANKS GENE AND GENE. Jean and I realize that a lot of people, especially large families can't afford to rent our chalet for a vacation of a few days or more. Our chalet is in a very unique setting, away from the road, and facing the lake, and very private, with its own deck facing the water. The chalet also has a second deck for dining outside. We took great pains to not compromise the privacy of our chalet when we put in a couple of camping trailers and a tent area to accommodate families that could not afford to rent the chalet. Be sure to check our photo section to view the covered picnic pavilion with sink and hot and cold water to help our campers and those in tents to enjoy their stay. There is also a laundry room with FREE washer and dryer for all our guest. [Please bring your own soap powder] The laundry room also has a shower room for our campers. Jean and I are family people, and we try to do our best to make your stay with us a relaxing, exciting and memorable occasion. Please feel free to call us if you need more information. Thanks, and may God bless you, Gene and Jean Ohlmann.

Great Weekend Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We were looking for a quiet getaway where we could get away from the hustle & bustle of our home-life, possibly do a little fishing and just relax. What we found was all that and more. When we arrived, Gene was there to greet us and show us around. It is set up to accommodate a large group, or a couple. Everything is beautifully landscaped and well maintained. You can see there is a lot of pride put into the care of the place. We spent most of the beautiful fall day canoeing and fishing on Rough River, which runs directly behind the camp. I would definitely recommend to anyone to come and stay either as a group, or a couple. The whole place was set up nicely with lots of room and plenty to do.

We had a wonderful time and plan on returning next year.

Owner's Response: Hi Kelly, Thanks so much for coming to Serenity Gardens to relax a while and get in a little time to do some fishing, and "WOW" you and Steve did in fact fine a Honey Hole full of Crappie. Jean and I hope we see you again, and maybe if Jean is feeling better we can have lunch together. Thanks again for your review, we are so blessed to be the stewards of this peaceful piece of Gods earth. I think I shared a little bit of how Serenity Gardens came about after dreaming for twenty years of owning this property. Please come again and rent the chalet or one of the campers. May God bless both of you till we meet again. Sincerely, Gene and Jean Ohlmann.

The Property and Owners are Gems - Don't Miss Out

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house and the two on-site campers for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary party. We also coordinated with Gene to bring in an additional 33-foot RV.

To sum it up, Serenity Gardens' amenities are wonderful but Gene and Jean are the reason this place is so special. We had a lot of changes in the weeks before our party, but our hosts remained flexible and supportive. They were always available, through phone calls and email. I even visited in advance to tour the facility and check everything out. During my visit and numerous communications, Gene provided insight on anything I mentioned--pontoon boat rental, bringing in a porta-potty, seasonal weather averages, fishing spots, use of the chapel for vow renewal, distances to local attractions, parking for our guests, and free Wi-Fi were a few of the topics.

Once we arrived, Gene and Jean were amazing hosts. They truly are warm and caring people. Even though they live on site, the house, cabins, and grounds felt private. They made us feel right at home and so comfortable that we knew we could just knock on their door if we had a question. They visited us periodically at the shelter house or at the fire pit, and it was wonderful to visit with them.

The cabin is very nice, with a fun surprise in the master bedroom. The kids fought over who would stay in the loft! There is just one bathroom in the cabin but we had the use of 2 additional toilets and 3 additional showers because we essentially rented the whole property. The campers are old but still met our needs. The grounds are unique, with a semi-steep switchback trail leading to the fire pit and to the dock. It is very peaceful there--I counted less than 10 cars passing by the whole weekend! All we heard were the fish jumping in the morning, the pileated woodpeckers during the day, and the great horned owls hooting at night. The river still had plenty of water--it was not yet affected by lowering Rough River Lake to winter stage--and was beautiful. We had some people with mobility issues at our party. Gene has made a ramp that goes directly into the house, so they did not have to climb stairs.

Gene and Jean are wonderful, and I wholeheartedly recommend their place. If you are interested in becoming closer as a family, Serenity Gardens is the place to do it. Thank you, Gene and Jean, for everything and we look forward to seeing you later!

Owner's Response: Two wonderful people, Kathy and Steve, yes it took a while to formulate all the details for making a great weekend for family and friends. Thanks Kathy for allowing Jean and I to be just close enough to help when we were needed. We are so blessed to be the owners of Serenity Gardens and watched as God sends his people our way. Yes, there are times when the work load seems heavy for two people our age, but when the work is done and we watch our guest and the children run up and down the hill to the lake, we say a little prayer of Thanksgiving for being the stewards of this gift. We hope to see you and Steve and your parents this weekend if all goes well. Till we meet again. Sincerely, Gene and Jean.

Tucked Away in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We rented this property as a surprise for my husband's 50th birthday. I wanted something fairly close to home but away from it all, near the water, unique and with great views. This place had it all! As well, the couple who owns the property were about the sweetest people you could ever meet. Nearby and handy if you needed them but they gave you plenty of privacy if you didn't.

The cabin was beautiful with quaint little touches, like the loft and natural waterfall (when it rains). We loved the landscaping and scenery. You could walk the property for hours and find new things (or tiny creatures) to look at. We enjoyed swinging on the covered porch and listening to the birds. Finding all the beautiful bird houses was a treat too. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed the wood grill and made many wonderful meals on it. Lots of time was spent on the decks either taking in the views or a few games of cornhole. I spent Sunday morning in the tiny chapel and it provided just the needed peace for quiet time and worship. My husband enjoyed the ability to fish directly off the property. It is a bit of a hike uphill but Mr. Gene was often around to give him a lift back up on the golf cart. There was something for all of us and an overall lovely vacation spot.

If I had to leave one bit of feedback, it would be the size and space of the restroom area. Tucked into a cubby within the bathroom, the toilet is a bit of a tight squeeze if you are of large frame or stature. Luckily there was another facility onsite, as there are bathhouses and restrooms for the camping units. Otherwise, we were fully satisfied with the rental and would visit again.

Thank you for opening your home to us. It was a pleasure to meet you both!

Owner's Response: "OH" gosh, where do I begin to thank the three of you for all your wonderful words of praise for our little chalet on the lake. Thanks so much for your words of truth about the tight little pot area in the bathroom. That problem is being fixed in the early spring before we open. Jean and I love our little chalet and we thank God every day for the opportunity to be good stewards of his creation. Please come see us again and I will treat you both to dinner for coming our way. Thanks and God Bless till we meet again. Sincerely, Gene and Jean Ohlmann.

Serenity Gardens best place to relax!

  • 5 of 5

Serenity Gardens is mine and my husbands favorite place to stay. Not only is it beautiful and so peaceful but we hold it dear to our hearts because we had our wedding reception here two years ago! The Hammonds are TRUELY like our family they have always been so kind and makes us feel as if we are home. The surroundings are so peaceful and simply amazing! Wonderful landscape and skyline view! A swing on every corner to stop and enjoy the view! Beautiful decks built by Mr. Gene Hammond himself. Everywhere you look you see amazing birdhouses and beautiful flowers. Humming birds and butterflies everywhere! You don't know what you are missing if you don't stay here atleast once. Gean and Jean you are both a wonderful part of our life and will never be forgotten. See you all soon.

Owner's Response: Hi Mindy and Robert, Thanks to the two of you for coming again to see Jean and I and enjoying our Chalet. We are truly blessed to be the stewards of this special place. Jean and I were married here on the gazebo next door, some 20 years ago. Some guest read our story on the computer of how God Blessed me at first, and then how Jean and I worked together for some 23 years before we had a warm, inviting home and a lot of things to share for people to enjoy. Thanks, and God Bless the two of you, Gene and Jean.

The property was beautiful.

  • 5 of 5

I really enjoyed our stay at Gene and Jean's place. The house was so like being at home. It was furnished with everything that anyone would need for a get away, all you have to bring is your food and clothes. I hope to go back there again and would highley recommend it to anyone that would like to go and enjoy the peace and quiet and avery relaxing place to go to. I think it would be a beautiful place to go on a honeymoon or have a small wedding there since they have a chapel. You could not ask for any two people like Gene and Jean, they are the most kind hearted and sweetest couple that I have met in a long time.

Owner's Response: Hi Don, What a pleasant surprise to hear you talk about a wedding at our chapel. Just last weekend we had a wonderful young couple stay with us on their second anniversary. We have had a lot of people comment on the little chapel. Jean and I hope next year to renew our vows in the chapel, we wanted to renew them this year but Jean's health comes first, God's timing is never to be questioned by man. Glad you enjoyed your stay, I wish you and I could have had more time to talk, but heck, maybe next time. The girls and I had a few minutes to talk, and my friend, I commend you for your efforts to get the girls together just for old-time sake. Maybe along the way we did a thing or two right. Tell your friend hello from Jean and I, and if you may be interested, call us and you two could come down for a week end after we close down for the season, but before the hard freeze comes. Sometime right after the new year, I drain and pump out the water lines. Well guy, I'll close for now, thanks again for coming down to see Jean and I. Sincerely, Gene and Jean Ohlmann @ Serenity Gardens.

Owner's Response: Anna and Bill, Please come back as soon as you can. I am a little lost for words to describe the feeling`Jean and I experienced when you two stepped out of the car. Having never met the two of you, one might have thought we were long lost friends. When the SPIRIT moves, it is a little overwhelming. Thanks for the love you two brought into our life from the moment you arrived till we waved "see you later"friends, no good byes for you or us. We are so glad you enjoyed yourself while you were with us at Serenity Gardens. Anna and Bill, I think the two of you may enjoy reading how Serenity Gardens got its name and read a little history of our beginnings. Just go to traveler on the computer and it will appear. Now as I close this little segment of my day, let me give thanks to the Lord of all for a little talk with my friends in Christ. Have a lovely day and may the wind blow gently at your back as you go about your day. Gene and Jean.
