About Mr. Gene & Jean Ohlmann.

I grew up in Louisville, went to St.Denis,Valley,High School,University of Louisville for a short time after I got out of the United States Marine Corp. Bought a lot on Rough River in 1990,lived in camper and small cabin for a couple of years till I met Jean Marie. Jean loved the lake and after we married , we talked of moving to the lake. When JEAN retired a little while later we made the final decision and in 1999 we moved to the lake.

Mr. Gene & Jean Ohlmann. purchased this chalet in 1990

Why Mr. Gene & Jean Ohlmann. chose Kentucky

Jean and I were married on this property in 1996 on the gazebo I built over looking the lake. I bought this lot our home sits on in 1990 as a place to get away. I met Jean in 1992 at age 57 and we took a drive to the country.Jean loves the country as much as I and I have always had a dream of sharing our property with others. It has been a long time in coming, but GOD is always faithful and for 20 years I have wanted to build a cabin or small house to share with others. In about 2004 Jean and I were blessed to buy the lot next to ours and my dreams and blessings began to take shape. The lot next to our house had a burned out cabin on it and the yard was a boulder field, I mean the size of a refrigerator and up along with an old septic system and too many trees to talk about. After some two and one half years of working with the corp of Engineers my first plan took shape, Cut a road to the lake, but how, three or four people and a couple road people told me it could not be done. Well GOD had a plan and I had a couple of wonderful friends, Larry Mattingly and August Henning who I am so blessed to know. With Larry doing the brain work and August and his son doing the digging, out came the trees, up came the huge rocks and as I watched with tears in my eyes in two days I had a road to the lake. NOW THE REST OF THE STORY! In 2013 I was able to start my dream of 20 years, a guest house to rent and share with our friends.

What makes this chalet unique

There are several Unique features to our property that I believe are not available any where else on the lake. We can accommodate a couple looking for a quiet romantic get a way, or a large family get together. The Chalet will sleep 6 adults, plus 2 children in the loft. We have 2 campers, each will sleep 2 to 4. Tent area and 20 to 50 amp hook up.

The road we have that goes all the way to the edge of the water is a real blessing. NO STEPS to climb, rocks, or trees in your way. The slope is gentle enough for elderly folks,(like us)to walk. The road is from about 8 ft. to 12 ft. wide and we take our golf cart to the turn around at the water's edge. NO OFF ROAD VEHICLES OF ANY TYPE ARE ALLOWED TO BE USED OVER THE HILL. IF YOU BRING A OFF ROAD VEHICLE, IT MUST BE USED ONLY ON PAVED ROADWAYS. PLEASE COMPLY TO HELP US MAINTAIN A GOOD STANDING WITH THE CORP OF ENGINEERS. THANKS GENE AND GENE. Jean and I realize that a lot of people, especially large families can't afford to rent our chalet for a vacation of a few days or more. Our chalet is in a very unique setting, away from the road, and facing the lake, and very private, with its own deck facing the water. The chalet also has a second deck for dining outside. We took great pains to not compromise the privacy of our chalet when we put in a couple of camping trailers and a tent area to accommodate families that could not afford to rent the chalet. Be sure to check our photo section to view the covered picnic pavilion with sink and hot and cold water to help our campers and those in tents to enjoy their stay. There is also a laundry room with FREE washer and dryer for all our guest. [Please bring your own soap powder] The laundry room also has a shower room for our campers. Jean and I are family people, and we try to do our best to make your stay with us a relaxing, exciting and memorable occasion. Please feel free to call us if you need more information. Thanks, and may God bless you, Gene and Jean Ohlmann.

Relaxing Fourth Holiday

  • 5 of 5

What a surprise it was to visit Serenity Gardens. Pictures don't do it justice. It truly is a serene and relaxing place. From the beautiful landscaping and coy pond to fishing and swimming off the pontoon, to roasting marshmallows over the fire pit, to cooking out every night over the outdoor wood burning grill to hanging out under the pavilion during the rain. My adult daughters had their own camper to stay in for their privacy. This place has everything you could possibly want. I don't even know where to start with the owners, Gene and Jean are the most welcoming beautiful accommodating people you will ever meet. They will forever be in my heart. Look forward to visiting again.

Owner's Response: Thanks Barb, It was just great to see you and your brother at Little Dave's a few days ago. Jean and I both were in a fog for a moment, and had to get our heads together. We were having lunch with some friends we had not seen in many years. There parents who are both dead now. did all the food for our wedding 20 years ago at the lake. "WOW" were we caught up in the moment for a while. Barb, Jean and I from our hearts, thank you and your family for the time we spent together. The words you spoke of our chalet and the surrounding gardens reflect the goodness of your heart. Yes we are blessed to be the stewards of what we know is God"s grounds. Tell your sister and all your family hello for us,and we would love to see all of you again. May God bless all of you till we talk again. Sincerely, Gene and Jean.

It was wonderful!

On top of a nice bedroom in the basement, there are two loft beds. Very nice property. The owners are extremely nice and made sure we didn't need anything daily. The view is probably my favorite part though. I would recommend to anyone! Our stay was very pleasent!

We were very pleased with our stay. The house was very clean and the property was beautiful. Our children enjoyed everything about the place. The children loved playing corn hole with Mr. Gene. We will definitely return and keep in touch with them.

Owner's Response: Dear April, Thanks so much for your review. Jean and I want to say thanks from the heart. We do love to make sure the children have a good time, some time the children seem to be left out, so I enjoy taking them on a golf cart ride through the country. We have some Amish friends with children who love to show off their baby goats, horses, dogs, cats, and let us not forget the children, they often have a new born baby brother or sister to show off. Being from a family of 12, I can relate to the children very well. We hope that maybe sometime you may come our way again. Sincerely, Gene and Jean Ohlmann.

Owner's Response: Dear Eric, Natalie and Family, Sad to see you leave, But "OH' the memories. Jean and I want to thank Eric's parents for their visit on their Anniversary. Gosh we had a great time just hanging out and enjoying each others company. Thanks for the expertise on the computer. We don't have to tell you how we love our home, but it would be only a building if it were not for God's people. Jean and I are getting into the years, but we are so inspired by the guest who come our way that leaving here is not even in our thoughts for now. Thanks for all the kind words about us and our home. Please come our way again soon and may God bless all of your family. Sincerely, Gene and Jean Ohlmann.

The best spot that we have found! We can't wait to go back!

  • 5 of 5

I take my kids and grandkids camping every summer and we had a campsite booked for Memorial weekend but it was cancelled a few days before we were due to go because of flooding! Everything happens for a reason so I got on here and found Serenity Gardens and they still had a campsite and an RV available so I booked them both. We had such a good time! We had everything we needed and such wonderful hosts! All of the kids said that it was by far, the best camping spot ever! Had a big pavilion with fans to keep you cool, a radio with speakers at the pavilion, a washer and dryer, 2 showers and a bathroom for the camp site, water at the campsite, a sink at the pavilion with several tables and chairs for all of us the sit together and enjoy the scenery. A large picnic table for us to eat on, a big fireplace to cook on, fire pits for bon fires and even a pontoon to fish and/or jump off of! It even has WIFI!! I mean this place has absolutely everything! So peaceful and clean and beautiful! The campsite is one huge deck that overlooks the river! We are already planning our next trip and just got home an hour ago! LOVE this place and kids just love Gene and Jean!

Owner's Response: Hi Tracie, Thanks to people like you and your children and grand children, Jean and I can count our blessings many times. I remember how disappointed you were when the camp grounds got closed for high water. Well God has a way of blessing his children even when it looks like we are at a dead end. If he can part the RED SEA, I am sure he can find a dry spot at Rough River, called Serenity Gardens. Jean and I want to thank you from our heart for calling us for help. We are the ones who were blessed. Your memory is amazing for all you shared in your review. Please come see us again and I promised the girls a pizza night on us. Love from Gene and Jean.
