Diving and sailing are both popular activities in Alghero with several dive and sail centres nearby. La Via Ferrata del Cabirol is a spectacular coastal climbing route equipped and made usable for hikers who are either experts or accompanied by qualified guides.
Antonia is an Opera Singer and Roy is an Antique Restorer & Musician. Antonia's father was from Alghero and came to England in the late sixties. Since a child , she has been coming to Alghero every year for holidays and to visit family.
In those days there weren't direct flights and we would always have to go to the mainland first. When Ryanair started to fly here it made it so much easier and so we decided that it was a good time to buy somewhere for ourselves to stay.
Antonia purchased this apartment in 2003
We love Alghero's old town with everything on your doorstep including some of the best restaurants. Looking out of the window and watching the world go by is free entertainment! There's no better place to be to experience the real Italy.
You can walk around the old town walls by the sea, eating an ice-cream watching the sunset over Capo Caccia or sit at a bar having morning coffee and a cake whilst people watching and looking out to the sea.
The beaches are walking distance along a beautiful promenade or you can cycle on the purpose built cycle lane. There's no need for a car but if you did want to travel further afield, the bus station is nearby and buses are reliable and cheap.
Our flat is perfect for the real feel of Alghero, you are immersed in the historic centre as soon as you step out of the door. The best bars, clothes shops, restaurants and food shops are all within minutes walk.
We love chatting to the locals who are always friendly and the whole place is incredibly child friendly, our sons are often out with us until the early hours in Alghero!
Had a fantastic time here. It was our first trip to Sardinia and we have loved it. Over the week we went to 4 different restaurants/pizzerias. I highly recommend El Pultal on Via Columbano. It's a great pizza restaurant and the staff are lovely. It's reasonably priced and the pizzas are amazing. We have all had a really good time and hope to be back soon.
The flat was beautifully furnished and had everything we needed. Thanks to Antonia and Roy for all the tips and guidance with the flat and the local area, especially with the parking and the restaurants.
I visited Alghero many years ago, staying in the new town. I returned with friends at Easter and thought how much nicer it would be to stay in the old town, with its historic character and ideal location. I wasn't disappointed. Antonia and Roy's apartment was ideal, with all the necessary facilities, including iron and washing machine to catch up on some washing we had accumulated earlier in our trip. The kitchen is well stocked and there are some dvds and cds if you want to spend a night in. There are plenty of places to eat and drink but it is also nice to have the option to self cater. The apartment is spacious and well laid out. The rooms are cool, which I imagine in summer is welcome, although at easter was not so necessary; however, once the windows and shutters are open there is ample light. The furnishings are a little old fashioned for my taste but in a fairly neutral way, which means that they don't offend, and in any case are consistent with the "old town" atmosphere of the place. As mentioned elsewhere the double room has a huge comfortable bed. The only comparable bed that I have slept on, size wise, was in an old palace in Rajasthan, so it helped to conjure up some happy memories. There was a small leak in the bathroom which I texted Antonia about and she had it fixed the same day while we were out and about. It didn't spoil our holiday at all. All in all I would recommend the apartment for anyone who wishes to make Alghero their base for a holiday in one of the loveliest islands (if not the loveliest) in the mediterranean.
Fantastic location. The apartment is just 2 minutes walk to the sea for beautiful views and sunsets. There are restaurants literally on the door step as well as many local shops including a local bakery so you can easily pop out and buy fresh bread for breakfast. The marina for boat trips is only a few minutes further to walk and the bus station is quite close too. Alghero is a lovely, compact town - it was great being right in the heart of it, but not too noisy.
Everything we needed was provided in the apartment. The kitchen was very well equiped for cooking, unlike so many holiday apartments. Even beach towels were provided and UK power adaptors. The local agent who was at the bus stop when we arrived was very friendly and helpful. Any issues were sorted out very quickly. The apartment was very clean and well-maintained.
We enjoyed the boat trip to Neptunes grotto, which was worth doing. We also went on a full-day trip on the 'Andrea Jenson', which was excellent. We also had some trips on the cheap local busses, such as to Bosa.
We would definitely recommend Alghero and this apartment.
This is a lovely, spacious, very clean and well equipped first floor apartment. All communication with Antonia was prompt and efficient. Francesca, the agent, met us at the apartment to show us around and give us the keys. She was very helpful and on hand for any queries that we had.
We loved the old town, with the narrow cobbled streets, lots of restaurants to choose from, the little shops, the historical buildings and the beach close by. We hired a car for two days which gave us the opportunity to experience the beautiful little beaches and the Sardinian countryside.
A wonderful holiday and would recommend this apartment and visit to the old town to anyone.
The Apartment is exactly as described, though the second bedroom is internal to the layout so has a "dummy" window through to the lounge. It was clean and well appointed when we arrived with everything working, plus very useful extras like local guide books and beach equipment. The Apartment is surrounded by Restaurants, including the kitchen for one underneath. They did get a little noisy at times, it didn't cause us any issues as we just shut the windows, but in hot weather & High Season I could see it possibly being an irritant what with having no air-conditioning. Having said that the main bedroom has a new high-spec new window fitted which when shut does keep the noise out. To be fair that is the price you pay for being so centrally located in the Old Town with everything within a true 5 minute walk.
Personally, I would have appreciated the addition of either curtains or binds that could be angled shut (like in the lounge) to keep the main bedroom dark at night. The apartment has one portable air-conditioning unit of the type where you have to hang the hot air hose out of a window plus two portable fans and a ceiling fan in the kitchen. The two portable fans have seen better days; but the apartment is designed to keep heat out.
We accidentally visited when the FIA WRC Rally of Sardinia was taking place, which bases itself in Alghero, which meant that at times the Old Town cannot be entered by any Vehicles - including when we arrived from the Airport. The WRC Teams also take over all the car parking by the Marina, which if you have a hire car can make finding a parking space near the Old Town an adventure. Not impossible, but tricky.
Alghero has lovely beaches and a Restaurant on every(!) corner plus lots of lovely shops. We found eating out to be on the expensive side at around €50 a head for three courses and a bottle of wine, some a bit more - some a bit less. Restaurants were to a high standard though.
Overall an excellent Apartment, so long as being centrally based in the Old Town is what you are looking for.
This apartment is in a fantastic location in the historic centre of Alghero. It is well equipped and spotlessly clean. There are lots of excellent restaurants nearby, many within 100m. We were checked in by Francesca who was very friendly and helpful. I can highly recommend this apartment and would not hesitate to stay here again.
We had a fantastic holiday. This apartment was right in the heart of Alghero Old Town, all holiday we kept saying we couldn't believe how lucky we were. On a morning you could walk to the local bakery shop and get delicious freshly baked bread.
You could walk out on an evening and be immediately part of the atmosphere. The restaurants were good.
The apartment was lovely, tastefully decorated to be in keeping with the building. The apartment had everything we needed and more to ensure we had a perfect holiday. It had Wifi which was also wonderful.
Alghero has so much to offer the visitor with unspoilt stretches of white sandy beaches and clear waters which at present remain relatively uncrowded apart from in the peak season.
There are opportunities to try your hand at several water sports.
Alghero is still a flourishing fishing port hence the abundance of fresh fish on the menus. Lobster is a local speciality! Sardinian cuisine is about fresh ingredients, simply prepared and complimented by the highly rated local cannonau wine.
There are lots of fantastic restaurants and bars in the area .One can get lost meandering through the narrow cobbled streets.
Two hundred kilometres from the Italian mainland and about the same from North Africa, Sardinia sits in the middle of the Mediterranean, which has meant that throughout its history it has been invaded by various civilisations; Romans, Genoans, Carthiginians and most recently the Catalonians. The people in Alghero speak an ancient form of Catalan and the town is known as 'Barcelonetta'.
