Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cabin in Mendota

2 Bedroom 1 Bath Riverfront Cabin on Cattle Farm, Satellite Internet and TV

This is a small 625 square foot cabin with 2 bedrooms and 1 bath located on the North Fork Holston River in Mendota, VA, just on the north side of Bristol, VA. One bedroom has a bunk bed with a full size bottom bunk and a twin size top bunk. Suitable to sleep three. The other bedroom has a queen sized bed. Suitable to sleep 2. Living room with one couch and chair. Full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, dishware, and cooking utensils. Kitchen table to seat 4. Picnic table on the porch, just outside the kitchen. We now have Directv Television with most of the pay channels, as well as Satellite High Speed Wireless Internet. Currently there is no land line. The only cellular signal that works out here is through Verizon. So if you come, you are coming to RELAX!

There is over a mile of river frontage. You can sit on the front porch and enjoy the sounds of the river, while being secluded on this private farm. Relax and read a book, or break out the swimming gear and rafts or tubes and go for a tube ride from one end of the property to the other.

The property is hidden over a ridge, so when you come up the driveway and crest the hill, you are pleasantly surprised at the phenomenal view. Total privacy since the cabin is just off the river and well off of the road so you will never see a passer-by unless someone passes by in a canoe, raft or kayak.

This is an active cattle farm, so there are cows and care takers on the property. You will probably never see the caretakers, but they are there in a house located at the center of the property. You can not even see their home from your cabin. During the spring, summer and fall, you can enjoy most of the river frontage without being disturbed by the wondering cattle. There are a few areas where the cattle roam free so you will want to drive through those areas. You can drive from one end of the property to the other and have picnics, relax in the river, on the front porch or under a tree. The cattle are fenced off by an electric fence around the cabin to keep them from coming right up to you. They are cattle, not pets, so please do not attempt to pet or feed them. Enjoy their beauty and company from a distance. A majority of the river frontage is free from cattle, so you will be able to enjoy and explore most of the frontage. We will be available for a tour to show you all the areas of the property you can enjoy and explore freely.

The cabin is located in a private location on the property with mountain long range views. The views from all areas of the property are just phenomenal. There is even a 'beach' where you can go and easily lounge around by the river. Have a picnic under the massive trees offering shade. Run around in the hay fields. Or just sit back and listen to the river passing by.

We are located about 45 minutes from the Bristol Motor Speedway and 40 minutes to Abingdon. Downtown Bristol is approximately 35 minutes. The closest mall is about 35 minutes away in Bristol. Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas are about 30 minutes from the cabin. The nearest convenience store is about 15 minutes drive. Walmart and grocery stores are about 30 minutes drive for all your grocery and miscellaneous needs.

This cabin is small and is best suited for 4-5 people to be comfortable. There is a shower (no tub, but the shower head is the removable kind if you need to wash smaller children), sink, vanity in the bathroom. Linens, towels, sheets and blankets are provided. There is a 'micro' sized washer and dryer. The driveway is dirt/gravel off of the main road. I do not recommend sports cars (i.e. Corvette sized vehicles, super low vehicles not recommended) to drive on these roads.

You can feel free to open the windows to enjoy the fresh air, or there is a wall unit air conditioner in the kitchen/living/dining area if it gets too warm. There is a ceiling fan in the queen sized room (not int he bunk bed room). In the winter, there is a gas log fire place in the living room to enjoy and use for heat as well as an electric area heater.

If you have questions, please feel free to call or email.

About Owner/Manager

We currently live in Bristol, VA. This is our cattle farm where we also come to relax and play with our family on the river.

Owner/Manager purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Owner/Manager chose Virginia

We fell in love with this property because of the view as you crest over the ridge from the entrance. It is total privacy and seclusion. Phenomenal views from many areas of the property, all of which are easily accessible. The property had been a cattle farm in the same family for 3 generations when we purchased it. We felt we were purchasing a piece of history as well as a gorgeous place to come and relax and enjoy what this area has to offer while still maintaining it as a working cattle farm. You are out in the mountains for privacy, but not too far from town for when you want to go shopping, out to eat, or need the usual grocery items. The cabin is simple with the necessities for a lovely stay, but we will be adding upgrades as time goes on both inside and out. So, even though you will enjoy your stay, each time you come back, it will get better and better!

What makes this cabin unique

There are rocking chairs and a picnic table on the front porch overlooking the river. Warning: it will put you to sleep! The sound of the river is so relaxing. You can sit in the rocking chairs and just relax and read a book. Open the windows to enjoy the fresh air and hear the sounds of the river from the inside. The best place to visit on the property is the bottom land across the hay fields on the river where we call 'the beach'. There are magnificent shade trees lining the river where you can sit and relax or wade in the river, or bring a blanket to have a picnic.

Peaceful serenity on family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this Cain for 8 nights, and I was so terrified how the kids would get along (14-boy, 13-girl, 7-girl), but they all got along beautifully the entire time! Up at dawn and to bed just after dark, and we are a solid breakfast at lunchtime in the summer family! There is so much to see and do without ever leaving that we didn't want to waste a minute of daylight! Each morning started with breakfast and tubing down the river... I am a multiple cup of coffee a day kind of girl and I only drank 3-4 cups in over a week, the peacefulness and fresh air was my get up and go! I definitely suggest to anyone visiting to wake up 30 minutes before dawn on the first day and climb the hillside. The cows aren't climbing up and down yet, and the view of the countryside at sunrise is beyond spectacular! Paw Paw Bottom is great too, a little rocky beach at the river bend that had plenty of shallow water for my youngest to get used to the river was amazing! Until she got the hang of the rocks, then there was what she named "Trinity Cove" right in front of the cabin, a small area completely protected by rocks that she could play in pretty freely, until it disappeared after a rainstorm brought up the water level by a foot or so (we even stayed through two days with bad storms, never needed to turn on the 4WD in my Envoy, but a higher clearance vehicle is probably a must have). The night we arrived brought a new calf, and he was already up and down the hillside by the time we left, so amazing to watch the little guy grow! Favorite activities while we were there- the river- tubes, canoes, wade fishing, just plain old wading and exploring the banks (when we arrived it was low and clear enough to wade most of the way between PawPaw bottom and the cabin, with only a few deeper holes under the trees, by Friday, the rain had stirred up the dirt and we could see nothing and the water was much higher!), watching the kayaker a get trapped in the rocks during the July 4 weekend, on land, just wandering and exploring by foot, I have amazing photos of the barns without ever stepping foot inside, the structure and history behind them only makes it more beautiful, the hillside- we walked from the cabin up to the last peak, and it took my breath away! Even my 14 year old son sat on a log and was just looking out for miles upon miles of peaks and the view of Mendota from up there- WOW! If you don't mind, or even enjoy the cattle as we do, this is perfect! And Cabin is clean, nice too!

so peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this cabin on our annual Thunder Valley Nationals trip - what an awesome place! It's very secluded and the river...it will put you to sleep! There is also an area of the property called "Paw Paw bottom" - it's a sandbar about 100 yards long or so...let's just say that we did not want to leave! It's a great place for an family picnic. If you're into kayaking, canoeing, fishing, etc.. this is the place for you! It's the perfect place to get away from the everyday rat race and re-charge! I would advise bringing a truck as the road is a little bumpy in spots. Over-all we loved it here and will definitely be going back next year.
