Large Family Lodging
We are the Poff family...Dad, Mom, and 7 beautiful children (ages 1 to 23).
Barry and Angella Poff purchased this cottage in 2014
The home was adequate for our family. My husband and I along with our daughter, son-in-law and 4 year old granddaughter.
Positives: close to Ark Emcounter, easy drive to Creation Museum. Allowed Us to have more space than motel and allowed us to save money by having some meals there.
We highly recommend City BBQ in Florence, KY!
Negatives: dishes in cupboard were dirty with left over food hardened onto the plates. Also one plate had crumbs on it! Coffee cups had coffee ring in the bottom of the cup. Glasses were cloudy. We re-washed everything. Later discovered the soap pod in the dishwasher door, so evidently the soap door did not open. But still, the dirtiness of the dishes should have been noticed prior to being put away! The mattresses upstairs are old and uncomfortable. The carpet in the living room has stains. We would not go back to this home.
This is a wonderful vacation rental- a great place to rest and relax in the midst doing touring some of the best Bible-based attractions in the U.S.- the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter. The museum a 45-minute drive north, and the Ark Encounter is 10 minutes or less to the southwest. There is a hospital and grocery stores very close by. The listing is mostly accurate- the floor-plan shows a second bedroom, which is actually the dining area. There is one master bedroom on the main floor with all of the other beds upstairs. The owners were reasonably quick in response to our communications through the VRBO website.
The house is kept very clean. We REALLY appreciated that aspect! Sheets were clean and the bed made up, blankets were ready and available in the master closet, and the towels were fresh and folded in the bathroom. Two extra rolls of toilet paper are provided, which with the roll already on the dispenser was enough for the seven people that used the bathroom. The kitchen is a little short on a few items- you might want to check through the drawers, and cabinets and then pick up helpful items (like plastic wrap, foil, an extra roll of paper towels, etc.) along with your groceries at Ruler Foods (just north on the main road a couple of miles- it’s a discount version of Kroger stores- carries Kroger brands, including some of the organic/Simple Truth products; take a quarter to use a shopping cart) or the Wal-Mart in Dry Ridge. There were enough basics to be able to cook on the stove top and bake in the oven. We enjoyed a stay in late September, which resulted in using both the cooling and heating systems. Both worked very well and we were quite comfortable. The upstairs was comfortable with a window A/C unit. The washer and dryer worked well and were an important aspect of our stay! A bonus feature is the sweet neighbor next door. We stayed with eight people, and I can see how the house would easily accommodate 12.
Our family very much enjoyed our stay in this cozy house. Between the yard (and sticks!) and the basket of stuffed animals and dinosaurs in the upstairs ark room, our kids fully occupied their every spare moment. We appreciated the movie collection (just lightly tap the DVD player to un-jam the drawer), and the presence of God’s Word throughout the house. We would DEFINITELY come back again, and have already told others about this great little house!
This was just what we needed in our travels to northern KY!! Our first day we traveled to Louisville to visit a school our oldest son is interested in. The second day we visited the Ark Encounter, and what a treat that was!! How nice it was to be only five minutes away from it! On the third day, we had to pack up and head back home. The Cottage description and directions were exactly as described: an old farm house that has been fixed up and made very usable for large families like ours. It was clean and ready for action when we arrived. Our five girls were thrilled with the upstairs sleeping and play area, and it suited them very well! Our two older boys made good use of the futon and couch. We were able to prepare and cook our own simple meals while being "home" at the cottage, and it was very nice to be able to get some laundry done, too. The master bedroom was comfy and quiet. Yes, we'd recommend this location to others! And, yes, if we're coming back through the area, we will certainly try to stay here again!! Thank you to the Poff family for making this available! ~~The (nine) Youngs
Plenty of room for the six adults and 3 children we ended up with. It was an all girls weekend so privacy was not so much a big deal.
It has every thing you could possible want to cook with except a mixer and the little ones were introduced to a whisk.
Great time had by all.
The house was just as described. It was clean and comfortable. Easy to find Walmart for groceries and just minutes from the Ark Encounter. The neighbors were very nice and helpful. We walked in the cemetery across the street which was interesting. I loved the Scriptures on the walls! I recommend this home .
Our family, with extended family as well, shared the Old Kentucky Home and LOVED IT!! We're already dreaming about when we could bring other friends or family down another time. It was such an encouraging place to stay, as Bible verses sweetly adorn nearly every wall. The Ark room upstairs is brilliant! Our kids spent hours playing up there. (A couple of our kids even chose their souvenir stuffed animals based on which ones would be fun "friends" for the stuffed animals in the Ark Room.) Though there were a dozen of us staying in the house for four of our days there, just one bathroom was fine. The home was clean, comfortable, and quaint, and Barry and Angella were available by text or email when we had questions. Even the neighbors were a delight!
We spent time at the fantastic Creation Museum (technically 40 minutes away, but there were a few traffic / accident issues several days, so it's good to plan a little extra time.) The healthy dose of apologetics we got at the Renew-A-Thon conference was fantastic, and the Snakes Alive workshop is amazing! Our kids enjoyed the camel rides (a little spendy for a three-minute walk, but definitely memorable); the sluice mining experience was also fun. Over the five days we went to the Creation Museum, our kids probably spent a couple hours just watching the turtles, fish, frogs, and birds in the foyer of the museum.
The Ark Encounter is a must-see! What a marvelous, beautiful way to bring Noah's history to life! We went for two days, as it was only five minutes from the house. A schedule that worked for our family was to eat a good meal before we went and bring along a hearty snack. It took a couple hours to get through the first two levels; by that time everyone was hungry and needed a break. We sat on (a few of many) benches in a quiet end of the Ark enjoying grapes and string cheese, which fueled us sufficiently to explore floor 3 before heading back down the ramps, through the gift shop, and into the restaurant for dinner. The food is fine at both venues. Kids meals are probably the best deal.
If you have more than a couple people staying more than a couple days, we'd recommend bringing extra toilet paper, garbage bags, laundry and dishwasher soap. We brought Ziploc baggies and tin foil as well, which proved very helpful. The kitchen is well-stocked with place settings and silverware; pots and pans there were sufficient.
We're excited to return to the Old Kentucky Home!
