About Marianne Buehler

I have lived most of my life near or on the water in Maine. There are many special places to visit and spend time, such as on the Sheepscot River where there is rejuvenating quietude and opportunities to be on the water.

Marianne Buehler purchased this house in 2014

Why Marianne Buehler chose Somerville

My sons completed building the River Cottage in 2014 as a legacy home for us and travelers to enjoy a special environment surrounded by engaging nature and quietude. The property is central to the areas of Augusta, Rockland, Belfast, Dameriscotta, and Camden.

What makes this house unique

We are in love with our home because it is immersed in nature with unique vegetation, a natural setting, and opportunities to spend time in and on the water. Wildlife such as deer, beavers, birds, moose, and other critters may be seen in the neighborhood. Relax on the chairs, porch, lawn, picnic table or cook on the River.

Nature-filled stay at cozy and comfortable cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time at this modern, fully-equipped cottage. It is a quiet spot, beautifully located on the river. Our 4-year old loved the sloping garden and going kayaking together on the Sheepscot River, spotting small wildlife including beavers. The firepit makes for romantic evenings on the river bank. We do advice using bug repellant. Marianne is a wonderful host: very responsive, accommodating and welcoming.

The nearby general store provides you with all things necessary. Day trips can be taken to several historic towns on and nearby the ocean, and there are plenty of options to satisfy your craving for Maine lobster & other seafood.

A Natural Wonder

  • 5 of 5

We got to the house late in the night. The weather in Belfast was challenging. Heavy wind and driving rain. We quickly settled into the cozy digs. Comfortable beds. Nicely appointed kitchen. Good knives! Fresh corn and tomatoes in easy range. We retired and awakened early the next morning to the cry of a loon who was sunning on the dock. Before us a perfect river, slow and meandering it's still surface reflecting the trees and grasses. Surrounded by golden marshlands. The morning mist rising. Not a house or human in sight. A sanctuary. While drinking our coffee we were privy to a Great Blue Heron at close range stalking in the shallows. Huge wings cutting the air as it rose into the coming day. As a location it feels remote and full of surprise. We found an excellent old town canoe as the river cried EXPLORE! Out on the river the show got better and better. A Pileated woodpecker and then as we went up river...two bald eagles flying out of the woods - the second so low you could feel the beating wings. We navigated the beaver dams and ventured to the lake but found the river far more interesting. This is a gem. It has a wild and faraway feel. Enlightening. You come away with visions of a time out of time. Kudos. 10 stars.

Lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our week at River Cottage. The house is very cozy and comfortable, we heard loons each evening and saw beaver swim by in the river. There are no houses nearby so it is very private, and because of the beaver dam downstream there's no traffic on the river. There is a public boat launch nearby so you can enjoy the river and Long Pond. It's under an hours drive to the Camden Rockland area, so very easy to go for a lobster dinner and a day at the beach.

The only thing needed is a grill for outdoor cooking.

Owner's Response: The Sheepscot River is a special place...So glad you enjoyed the cottage and surroundings! Multiple destinations abound within 45 minutes on the ocean or inland--will add the public boat launch to the existing compiled list of possible destinations. And yes, I purchased a replacement for the previous outdoor wood-fired grill!

This was the perfect family get away!

  • 5 of 5

The pictures absolutely do this place justice! It was exactly as described, quiet and serene, with enough amenities to keep us entertained but still feel like we are away from it all. The little river was perfect for us, we could swim out to the creek or over to a small waterfall created by a natural beaver damn. There were canoes and kayaks but between the shallow creek and the beaver damn we couldn't get all the way out to the large pond. Given that we have a 5 year old, this was still plenty of kayaking for her.

There is a general store nearby that LITERALLY. Has everything you could ever need and several scenic towns such as Belfast, Wisscasset, and Camden are worth a day trip. Being bug spray or citronella, naturally it's the woods and we're expecting bugs, but there was a lot of mosquitos. The fire pit made for a great end to our quiet nature filled evenings.

Owner's Response: I am happy your family enjoyed your stay at the River Cottage! It is a peaceful place and there are many opportunities to see birds, exotic river water flowers, and lovely views while paddling the river towards Long Pond. After navigating the short beaver dam there is a deepening quietude as one paddles in the river’s ambience to the Pond—next time! And sometimes there are mosquitos…dependent on rainfall. The chimenea is new and glad you liked it! Nearby scenic towns abound in the area—so glad you visited them. I just completed an extensive list of nearby places and activities for guests. It was a pleasure hosting your family at the River Cottage!!

Nestled on the banks of the Sheepscot River in Somerville, Maine, the River Cottage overlooks the river with distant views to Long Pond Lake. Canoes and kayaks take the paddler downstream into the 2.5-mile lake; a dock is conveniently located in the river for easy water access. Eagles and Great Blue Herons nest along the river and wildflowers cover the embankments. The surroundings are privately located on multiple acres. The cottage was recently built and ready to be enjoyed. No neighbors can be seen or heard from the cottage, very private.

Centrally located in Midcoast Maine to the cities/towns of Augusta, Belfast, Rockland, Camden, Lincolnville, Boothbay, Damariscotta, and Portland (~1 hour drive), there is shopping, oceanfront activities, restaurants, local art shows, concerts/music events, museums (Wyeth, Lighthouse +), parks, and hiking within a 20-50 minute drive. Hussey's General Store (groceries+) is 10 minutes from the cottage--a local icon.
