About Marianne Buehler
I have lived most of my life near or on the water in Maine. There are many special places to visit and spend time, such as on the Sheepscot River where there is rejuvenating quietude and opportunities to be on the water.
Marianne Buehler purchased this House in 2014
Why Marianne Buehler chose Somerville
My sons completed building the River Cottage in 2014 as a legacy home for us and travelers to enjoy a special environment surrounded by engaging nature and quietude. The property is central to the areas of Augusta, Rockland, Belfast, Dameriscotta, and Camden.
What makes this House unique
We are in love with our home because it is immersed in nature with unique vegetation, a natural setting, and opportunities to spend time in and on the water. Wildlife such as deer, beavers, birds, moose, and other critters may be seen in the neighborhood. Relax on the chairs, porch, lawn, picnic table or cook on the River.

Peace and quiet
This was our second stay at River Cottage and we enjoyed just as much as the first. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy what nature has to offer.
The cottage is clean and comfortable. Kayaks and a canoe available for exploring the river and Long Pond. You can see herons, loons and even an eagle. In about an hour you can be in Boothbay Harbor for a lobster dinner.
Highly recommended if you are looking for a place to relax and unwind.
It was a pleasure to see Cathy and her husband again at the River Cottage! Part of what engages people here is the serenity, wildlife, and quietude of taking a deep breath and relaxing. Midcoast Maine especially offers great restaurants, various hikes, shops, and a multitude of destinations.
Quiet Quaint and Relaxing
Our family chose the River Cottage as it was cheaper and away from all the hustle of bustle of the ocean city life. When we pulled up to the house we were thrilled, as our older teen / young adult children echoed “we don’t have service”. We weren’t disappointed as this was a vacation to get away, stop the world, and force the electronics to be put down. (However there is Wi-Fi, so we weren’t able to completely put the electronics down) As we entered the house again, no disappointment. This was the cleanest vacation rental we’ve booked thus far! Our son arose at 5:00 every morning, climbed into the canoe with his fishing pole, and down the river he went. Beavers and ducks swam by. An eagle and loon flew over, and we just soaked in God’s beautiful creatures. Kitchen was great to prep meals in and we loved sitting on the porch to eat dinner. Be aware, there is not a microwave, although that wasn't a big deal. The fire pit outside was great to make hotdogs and s’mores. Wonderfully delicious! Be sure to check out Hussey's General Store while you're there! It's a short 8 minute drive.
There is lots to do in Maine if you wish to take in other attractions, get ready to drive, but the miles are so worth it. From sunrise at Cadillac Mountain/Acadia National Park (2.5 hour drive), to Puffin watching out of Boothbay Harbor (1 hour drive), botanical gardens in Boothbay (1 hour), to eating cheap lobster at Docks Seafood in South Portland after taking a lighthouse tour (1.5 hours), to looking for moose in the Rangeley area (2.5 hours). Don’t let those pricier restaurants charge you $50 for a lobster meal. Docks is fresh daily, cheap and delicious! You can even order extra seafood from their cooler to take back to the cottage for another meal during your stay.
Our family is already talking about returning and we hope this review helps you decide to rent the River Cottage. Marianne was great to chat with and even dropped by to see us for a few minutes one evening.
I had wonderful renters who very much appreciated their week at the River Cottage! It makes me feel good that the Cottage is a great destination for local and other attractions around Maine. Having a place for children (and their parents!) to remember their special vacations is priceless. The great State of Maine has multiple lovely places to enjoy...I am glad my cottage is one of them.
Beautiful property! Tucked away off main road with easy access to many things to do.
This was a great place to unplug and get off the grid for a few days for my family. While we had access to internet, there was no TV which encouraged everyone to read more and get moving early. Located in a great spot that was convenient to see many of Maine's beautiful costal communities.
Property owner was just down the street so when we ran into a problem (we couldn't figure out how to use the washing machine; turns out there was a switch that had been turned off that shouldn't have...) she was able to come by right away, troubleshoot, and solve.
There is no A/C; and when the breeze came through, it was very comfortable to sleep. We happened to be there during a particularly hot & humid stretch, but large tower fans helped to make sleeping more comfortable.
There is a large country store about 5 minutes down the street, so anything we'd "forgotten" or realized we needed for dinner was easy to get.
This was a perfect place for our 3-person family and could have easily accomodated a friend for our daughter, as there were two twin-sized beds in the 2nd bedroom.
It was a pleasure to host your family, Kristine! The River Cottage location makes for a lovely breeze and a quiet spot on the Sheepscot River. Relaxing by the river or paddling out to Long Pond is an adventure of wildlife, beautiful river flowers, and quietude. A detailed midcoast Maine local map of interest is available for daily excursions.
Nature-filled stay at cozy and comfortable cottage
We had a lovely time at this modern, fully-equipped cottage. It is a quiet spot, beautifully located on the river. Our 4-year old loved the sloping garden and going kayaking together on the Sheepscot River, spotting small wildlife including beavers. The firepit makes for romantic evenings on the river bank. We do advice using bug repellant. Marianne is a wonderful host: very responsive, accommodating and welcoming.
The nearby general store provides you with all things necessary. Day trips can be taken to several historic towns on and nearby the ocean, and there are plenty of options to satisfy your craving for Maine lobster & other seafood.
It is a pleasure to know that the property is enjoyed! As the seasons mature, beautiful flowers and wildlife, especially eagles, egrets, and others will be on the river, a place of quietude. It is a quiet place to relax and a great home base to explore from. We hope to see you again!
home was clean and fully furnished. Renter was attentive to our needs. Kayaks were provided, which provided much enjoyment for our family!
So glad you and your family enjoyed the River Cottage on the Sheepscot River--it is a great spot! Your family had an opportunity to see a couple of Somerville seasons blending back to back...
A Natural Wonder
We got to the house late in the night. The weather in Belfast was challenging. Heavy wind and driving rain. We quickly settled into the cozy digs. Comfortable beds. Nicely appointed kitchen. Good knives! Fresh corn and tomatoes in easy range. We retired and awakened early the next morning to the cry of a loon who was sunning on the dock. Before us a perfect river, slow and meandering it's still surface reflecting the trees and grasses. Surrounded by golden marshlands. The morning mist rising. Not a house or human in sight. A sanctuary. While drinking our coffee we were privy to a Great Blue Heron at close range stalking in the shallows. Huge wings cutting the air as it rose into the coming day. As a location it feels remote and full of surprise. We found an excellent old town canoe as the river cried EXPLORE! Out on the river the show got better and better. A Pileated woodpecker and then as we went up river...two bald eagles flying out of the woods - the second so low you could feel the beating wings. We navigated the beaver dams and ventured to the lake but found the river far more interesting. This is a gem. It has a wild and faraway feel. Enlightening. You come away with visions of a time out of time. Kudos. 10 stars.
So glad you enjoyed your time on the Sheepscot River, Wendy! The River corridor is a magical place bountiful in wildlife, especially birds, unique flowers, serenity, and a sense of quiet wonder. I truly hope you will visit again...
Nestled on the banks of the Sheepscot River in Somerville, Maine, the River Cottage overlooks the river with distant views to Long Pond Lake. Canoes and kayaks take the paddler downstream into the 2.5-mile lake; a dock is conveniently located in the river for easy water access. Eagles and Great Blue Herons nest along the river and wildflowers cover the embankments. The surroundings are privately located on multiple acres. The cottage was recently built and ready to be enjoyed. No neighbors can be seen or heard from the cottage, very private.
