Centrally located in a friendly neighborhood mid-way between Downtown Juneau and the Mendenhall Valley, it is convenience with a view at an affordable price. A large deck, with great sun exposure, looks out over beautiful Gastineau Channel, Douglas Island and the majestic Chilkat Mountain Range. A home with 2 comfy queen beds, twin sized bunk beds and if needed a queen sized futon couch. Its a perfect place to rest after a busy day out and about.

Some things very nearby:

Just down the hill is Twin Lakes park. In addition to two small lakes, there are shelters, a playground and walking path. It's a pleasant place for a morning jog, mid-day outing or evening stroll. For more vigorous activity, hike up to the Salmon Creek Reservior and enjoy the peaceful sounds of birds and flowing water, takes about 2 hours. DIPAC, the local salmon hatchery is just around the corner (1.9 miles). There you can learn about the life cycle of salmon and view other local sea life. Watch returning salmon go up the fish ladder and perhaps spot a seal offering motivation. Enjoy a fresh grilled salmon dinner at the Salmon Bake, an outdoor eating experience with live entertainment, located on the bank of Salmon Creek (1.4 mi). Costco (1.7 mi) and Walmart (2.1 mi) are nearby grocery stores. For a quick snack or meal-to-go, the Breeze-In Bakery and Deli is a good choice (1.4 mi ).

About Merigwen Kawakami

Merigwen was moved to Juneau from California by her parents at the age of 6. Upon seeing the then muddy streets of downtown, she was less than impressed and started to cry. Forty-three years later, she is still here...raising her three children with her Japanese husband, Tom and thanking her parents for the beautiful place she calls home.

Merigwen Kawakami purchased this house in 2013

Why Merigwen Kawakami chose Juneau

This area of Juneau receives great sunlight from morning to night. No matter where you want to go, you are nearly there. It's easy access to bike paths and the city bus line. Best of all, I love the view of the Chilkat mountains.

Perfect for our family of 6

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here the first week of July. It was clean and the kitchen was well stocked. I especially liked how Merigwen sent us email in advance telling us exactly how much laundry and dish soap, paper towels, etc would be there when we arrived, so we knew that we did not have to immediately go to the store.

She has obviously listened to previous reviews - the futon you see in the photos has been replaced with a more comfortable couch (which also pulls out into a bed). She has put things on the deck chairs so the legs do not get stuck in the deck cracks.

Not shown is the mud room entrance - which was a perfect spot to hang our wet hiking gear and take off our shoes and store them. The weather was good enough for us to eat out on the deck a few times. I highly recommend this property.

Stay in Juneau

  • 4 of 5

The house was very clean, convenient and easy to settle into. The view of mountains and water from the nice deck was lovely. The location of the house was accessible to all we did and the airport. The area was quiet and peaceful.

The house was well maintained, clean and perfect for a relaxing week with our family.

  • 5 of 5

The house was in a perfect location between the airport/Mendenhall Glacier and downtown Juneau. It was a very comfortable stay for six adults. It was easy to get to all the nearby attractions (hiking, Douglas, etc). The neighborhood was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed the view of the channel from the deck. It was nice to have a few staples in the home like dish soap, bath soap, and laundry detergent. We would definitely go back! Thanks :)

Perfect for our people!

  • 4 of 5

Our visit to Juneau was delightful. With five adults, the accommodations were perfect! The kitchen was well supplied and the overall space was great. It took a bit of time to figure out the heater...a minor issue. Only one issue we all were in agreement on was that the living/family room sofa was uncomfortable and kept sliding apart. Overall, on our trip to eight different towns on the Inside Passage, this property was at the top of our list.

Owner's Response: Thank you considering the house to be the best place of your stay while touring Alaska and for your feedback. If it happens to you it can happen to others. I'll see about posting instructions for the monitor heater. Sorry about the couch slipping. Perhaps it wasn't pushed back correctly. It is a simple but different kind of design. I'll make up instructions for it also. Alaska is a beautiful place, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and the view.

The house was very comfortable and in an excellent location. The deck provided wonderful views.

The property provided a wonderful place for our family to stay. It was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was fairly well supplied. We would have enjoyed more towels and kitchen linens and did run out of toilet paper. Perhaps these could be better stocked. Overall, we had a comfortable stay and would have no doubts about using the place again. Cleanliness and location were the best features. Give it a try--you won't be disappointed!
