Hello, we are the Gissendanner family, living in Goose Creek, SC. Spending a lot of time in coastal areas , we were attracted to the change in scenery in the mountains of Western, NC. In the summer of 2008 I stood outside under the balcony at the Lake Lure Inn, sipping my coffee and admiring the beauty of Lake Lure. Later that afternoon while walking along the Lake with our two small children we began to talk about the adventure of building a log cabin in this peaceful place. The next weekend we returned to Lake Lure and began the process of looking at property.
Kim Gissendanner purchased this house in 2008
We came across this community that our home is built in quite by accident and after driving around not knowing where we were headed we drove by the property that soon purchased. We met a couple who were building the cabin next door. We immediately realized that there was a business connection from a few years before. Since then there has been an almost family like bond and s divine intervention would have it this became the place for us to build. For us it's perfect. Just far away from home to get away yet not so far as to make it a long drive. The distance we travel to the cabin let's us decompress and unwind so that we are on 'mountain time' when we arrive. We love this place in all seasons. The fall colors are spectacular and summers here are cooler and comfortable. On more than one occasion we've experienced a white Christmas.
Our cabin is located just 10 minutes from Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. Outdoor activities are everywhere and there is plenty of events going on year round. When you want a more peaceful visit you are far enough up the mountain and away from the main road where you can simply enjoy doing nothing. Today I enjoy stepping out on my back deck and admiring the beauty of the surroundings. You can feel the peace in the air. At night we s go out onto the back deck with lights off. Lifting our heads up we experience what we refer to as 'the big picture' (more stars than you can ever imagine.)
The dream of relaxing by a fire in the heart of the mountains is what prompted me to stay at this ideal location. As a destination travel specialist, I was looking for something extraordinary and not your run-of-the-mill house to rent. The idea of staying close to where the movie ‘Dirty Dancing’ was filmed as well as be close enough to rustic towns such as Hendersonville and Chimney Rock was an exciting thought. I could relax while I worked to deadlines and pull the local culture in at the same time.
I was not disappointed. The cabin (while a little tricky to find) is smartly nestled in seclusion on Lake Lure. I knew the moment I walked down the hand made steps to the front porch, it was going to be exactly what I was looking for.
The cabin is neatly furnished with all the comforts of home. I brought my own linens and some items from my pantry at home. A fully equipped kitchen, large family sized living room, three bedrooms, two baths and a huge porch that feels as if you are standing in the tall pines of the Blue Ridge Mountains, are just the starters. Venture down to the basement and there sits a hot tub sizable enough for seating 5-6 comfortably.
I felt as if I had found a little peace of heaven on earth. The wildlife (deer everywhere) and surrounding natural beauty is breathtaking. Combined with convenience of hiking trails, waterfalls and neighboring towns, this is the perfect getaway place for two or a family.
The only downfall of staying here was the fact that I had to ‘leave’. I would highly recommend booking this cabin for a rustic, back to basics getaway. It is truly worth the ride to get there.
Enjoyed staying here. The owner was terrific in offering assistance and tourist info. A quick phone call and we had an answer. We had a group of adults and had a marvelous time in the great room and on the porches. The had just finished staining and renovations to the exterior and it looked beautiful. The place is well maintained and very clean inside and out. The grocery is just a short 5 minute drive yet you feel like you're really secluded when you are up at the house.
This home is great for a large gathering. The kitchen is well-equipped and there is plenty of seating. The rooms are very spacious and the decks and very large. However, we did experience some problems with the amenities: pool table with open pockets so balls fall out, treadmill not working, air hockey table not working, fireplace not igniting were some. We did have to take care of four cockroaches: 2 in basement and 2 in living room which was unfortunate. The bathrooms were impeccable: very clean and spacious. The TV is nice. Overall, we had a great time and enjoyed the home.
We enjoyed our family time in your home up in a secluded quiet area. Thank you for sharing it with us. The floor plan and bedrooms worked great for our three couples plus 2 little grandsons. The kitchen was well stocked. We all loved canoeing on Mirror Lake and our hike up 499 steps to Chimney Rock. Larkins on the Lake restaurant had fairly good food and service. We ate at a fun place at Chimney Rock. Hendersonville was a great place to shop and eat also. It was a great weekend!
We enjoyed our stay at Laurelwood Lodge. It was spacious and well equipped. Be aware that noise travels easily between floors, so setting rules for bedtime is very important. We had everything we needed for cooking our morning and evening meals. There were 10 of us and had plenty of room. The owner was available by phone to ask questions and made our process easy.
We enjoyed a wonderful family weekend at Laurelwood. Kim quickly answered his phone anytime we had questions. The home comfortably accomodated all 12 members of our group. The children loved the basement game room. The porch and the upper deck were well used. The grill and the kitchen had everything we needed. The bathrooms were pristine (very important for this girl.). The beds were comfy. The beach and the waterfall at Riverbend were big hits with young and old. I only wish we had more time so we could have gone tubing and kayaking. Thanks for helping us make many good memories.
