About Nick and Julie Pike
Casa de las Gaviotas was our family home for 5 years. We lived in Almunecar with our four children and fell in love with the town and its people. We moved back to the UK when our children needed to move onto higher education and now live near London but make regular trips back to our Spanish home.
Nick and Julie Pike purchased this Villa in 2002
Why Nick and Julie Pike chose Almuñécar
As soon as we arrived to view this villa we fell in love with it and set our hearts on making it our new home in Spain. The space and the views just took our breath away. Our children spent some of their happiest years growing up here and we enjoyed many memorable times sharing our home with family and friends. The town of Almunecar is a town with a genuine Spanish heart. Those who take the time to really explore the old cobbled streets and hidden squares will find a real gem.
What makes this Villa unique
We really believe that there is nowhere quite like Casa de las Gaviotas ! The location is stunning and our photos cannot do it justice. You are surrounded by amazing views of mountains and sea and the sun shines down on you all day long from the moment it rises until it sets. Everyday life with all its stresses and strains just fade away as you walk out onto the terrace and gaze into the distance.

Absolutely fabulous place, the photos don’t do the views justice.
The only disappointment with this villa is having to leave it
Absolutely stunning villa
A picture perfect villa with almost everything you could ask for. The views are breathtaking and the pool is the perfect size. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The only negative would be the road up to the villa - a 4x4 should be recommended for this. Don't let that put you off though as this is a very special place.
Relaxing week in a villa with the most spectacular views
After a long and winding drive up a very narrow road we arrived at Casa de las Gaviotas. The four of us entered the villa and all said the same thing "WOW". The villa was spotless and had the most beautiful panoramic views that you could imagine.
We soon adjusted to the drive up to the villa and back down and could only describe our first journey to be somewhat "hair-raising"!
We drove approximately one hour during the week to Granada to visit Alhambra which is a must to see. The gardens had the most beautiful selection of roses I had ever seen. After spending 4-5 hours there we were all happy to return to our beautiful villa and enjoy the pool.
We drove to Almunecar and had a lovely stroll along the waterfront. We all promptly went into the sea for a paddle and were immediately told to get out as there were several tiny jellyfish everywhere. Fortunately we all managed to get out without a problem. We took the advice of the owners and went for lunch at "China". If you ordered a drink there the tapas were free and quite tasty.
Driving to Salobrena and La Herradura was well worthwhile. We walked along the beach and had lunch at El Bambu where we tasted some of the best Calamari ever!!
The outdoor market in Almunecar was an experience and larger than I had imagined.
We would all not hesitate to recommend a stay in this villa. The four of us have been friends for years and have travelled extensively to many countries. We all agreed that this villa was our favourite.
Beach towels are not provided and they would have been helpful for pool and beach use as packing them does take up space in the suitcases.
The beds were very comfortable and the villa itself was very well equipped. The villa is designed for larger groups so we really enjoyed the extra space and privacy.
Thank you so much Julie and Nick for an unforgettable vacation in your villa. If our travels bring us back to Spain we most definitely will contact you again.
In the Sky
The listing of Casa de las Gaviotas is accurate, but does not prepare you for the place in reality. It is an amazing experience driving up the hill side watching the view below unfold, in entering the villa the views are overwhelming. The villa is so much larger than the photographs portray and space in abundance. It was clean and welcoming. The whole process from initial enquiry to booking was very smooth with questions answered swiftly. The property has everything one needs with good cooking facilities. The beds are comfortable and bedrooms large. It was a most enjoyable stay and highly recommend as a good getaway and away from it all.
We had great holiday here in october 2011, two families (two 4y old kids). The house was roomy, everything we needed was there. Big terrace and lawn allowed children run around and play with toys we found from the house in big boxes!
Views were fantastic and almost no noise from the road down below. Nice beaches are not far by car, also restaurants and shopping (grocery and other).
This was the perfect villa for our big family holiday. The house is surrounded by large terraces with stunning views of the sea and mountains which make for a great place to relax, dine and chill out. The bedrooms are spacious and airy and the ceiling fans meant that we always felt comfortable even though the weather was hot. The pool is set in secluded private gardens and you can gaze at the mountains whilst you're swimming ! Although the villa gave us the feeling of being totally out of the way we were only a short drive from the bustling town of Almunecar and its beaches. We particularly enjoyed walkling around Almunecar which has a really Spanish feel to it and never ceased to amaze us with all the wonderful tapas that comes everytime you order a drink ! We were all so sad to leave this beautiful villa but took home some fantastic memories and will definitely be going back.
The area is known as the Costa Tropical because of the all year round sunny climate. Almunecar and its handsome Moorish castle sit on a small hill between the mouths of two rivers. Almunecar has managed to retain the atmosphere and character of an old Spanish town with winding narrow streets and tapas bars. Besides tourism, fishing and the growing of tropical fruits remain at the heart of the town's day to day life. To the west of the town is the Punta de la Mona, a pine clad headland sheltering the attractive Marina del Este which offers a range of water sports. Beyond is the pretty horse shoe bay of La Herradura. Along the coastline are numerous beaches and sheltered coves. To the east is the whitewashed village of Salobrena with the peaks of the Sierra Nevada in the background. One and half hour drive to the ski resorts of the Sierra Nevada or the beautiful countryside of the Alpujjaras. One hour from the historic city of Granada with the amazing Alhambra palace and gardens.
Other Activities: Nov-Mar skiing in Sierra Nevada (1.5 hours drive) , bird watching from the villa
