Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Division No. 1, Subd. G - Kittiwake Cottage

One Bedroom Right at the Oceans Edge

Perched on the edge of the Atlantic ocean, on Bradleys Cove Road in Western Bay, this charming one bedroom cottage is the ultimate getaway for a couple or a single person who are looking for that special place to unwind and enjoy nature at its best. An artists haven, you can set up your easel and paint the dramatic coastline without leaving your large private deck. Wake up in the morning to the sounds of loons and Kittiwakes and take your morning coffee to the private whale watching dock located at the edge of the property. Enjoy the unique chic nautical décor of the cottage with its bright colours and large windows with a panoramic view of the dramatic coastline. The modern kitchen has all new stainless steel appliances and all the utensils, and condiments you will need for cooking and baking. It has a modern bathroom with luxurious towels and linens, shower, sink and toilet. The bedroom features a queen size bed with high quality linens. We also have a small herb garden for your personal use. If your stay will be for a special occasion, and you would like fresh flowers or a special wine, or some other special request, please ask and we will try to accommodate you. Also if you have that special little furry friend that you would like to bring along, please ask. Please note that the scenery along this coast is some of the most beautiful you will find anywhere, but there are cliffs and a rough coastline so when you are enjoying the many opportunities for exploration, you need to use caution at all times. To see a fantastic video of the cottage and surrounding area, go to you tube . com and type 'Kittiwake Cottage' in the search area. Look at the video by Andre Major. Breathtaking!

About Catherine Whalen

The owner is a retired medical professional who has a family vacation home in the area and has been spending weekends and summers here for 15 years and found that when you are here your body and soul are in the same place and the peace and tranquility will rejuvenate your senses. When this little cottage became available she thought she would share this great experience with other people.

Why Catherine Whalen chose Newfoundland and Labrador

This little cottage allows visitors to enjoy all that is Newfoundland. The views are breathtaking and one visitor to the whale watching dock amusingly said that the whales were closer than at SeaWorld.

What makes this cottage unique

Even when the weather is not ideal, and you are inside, the views of the ocean and its ever changing seas will keep you entertained.

Kittiwake Cottage was an outstanding experience for us, from the arrival greeting from Catherine (Kitty) Whalen to her meeting with us when we checked out. The cottage is all that the pictures show and more. The attention to detail in the furnishing was very much appreciated by us as these added to the ambiance of the cottage. The location is excellent for accessing other villages within the area. Walking around the neighbourhood allowed us to meet neighbours who were not only welcoming but provided suggestions of things to do that one might not normally know.If we were to revisit Newfoundland, or if family/friends were to visit,we would definitely rent, or recommend to rent, this cottage again and enjoy all that it has to offer. Kitty continued success with this property as you and your husband have put a lot of effort and time into making this a wonderful experience for your guests. Dwayne and Diane.

A perfect week ...

  • 5 of 5

Taking a break from packing to watch the sunset and enjoy a lovely glass of wine. Hard to believe our week here is over! Thank you Kitty for creating such a beautiful getaway. The photos are accurate, though any attempt to capture the true beauty and comfort of Kittiwake Cottage is darn near impossible without experiencing it all in person. Walk in the door and you'll know what I mean! The decoration is perfection, and everything one would need to enjoy a holiday is here, including a well-stocked kitchen (including starter water, coffee, spices, condiments etc.), a Bose stereo, comfy sofas for relaxing after a hike or rainy day reading, gorgeous deck to soak in the views and sea air, and a barbecue to cook up Newfoundland's famous cod. Everything is clean, clean, clean and the queen bed is super comfy. Bradley's Cove, located in Western Bay, is the perfect location to explore the many scenic villages both south of here (you'll want to walk the amazing heritage trail in Bay Roberts, check out the historic buildings and scenery farther south in Brigus and then take a short drive west to Rodrigues winery for a tasting near Whitbourne) and north (Bay de Verde, where hillside houses cascade down toward the harbour and the sea and then right to the tip of the peninsula at Grates Cove, where you can follow blue paint markers along a coastal trail high above the rocky shore and then relax over dinner at the Grates Cove Studio, where a talented and entrepreneurial young couple serves up fresh ingredients in their Newfoundland-Cajun-Korea fusion dishes). But you don't have to travel far for an enjoyable sea walk: right outside Kittiwake Cottage is a boardwalk trail that leads to a lighthouse and stunning views across the bay. Up the hill, there's a walking path popular with sheep! You'll also find picnic tables on the stone beach on the way to the boardwalk. Of course, you may not want to leave the cottage property once you sit on those red chairs by the cliff. Heaven!

A little piece of heaven!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had the pleasure of spending four days at Kittiwake Cottage ....... it was everything we expected from the photos and so much more! Catherine goes above and beyond to ensure your stay is exceptional ........ the lights turned on, music on low, fresh flowers everywhere and wine on the table. What can we say - she makes you feel very special! It was an emotional return to Western Bay for myself as I spent time there as a child with my grandmother. The time at Kittiwake allowed me a serene place to go back and return to the wonderful memories I had a child. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the peacefulness of this magnificent setting as well. Thank you Catherine ........ you are a wonderful hostess, it was a pleasure to meet you! I hope to return again to this little piece of heaven! Carmen and Gord, Maple Ontario.

A Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful week at Kittiwake Cottage. The cottage itself was beautiful. Kitty had champagne waiting for us upon our arrival and fresh cod which was delicious on the BBQ. We loved watching the whale which came into the bay on several days and walking the surrounding area. It was the perfect, peaceful getaway. We will definitely recommend this to our friends and family.

A gem!

  • 5 of 5

We were extremely fortunate to get a chance to stay here because of a cancellation due to the Alberta fires. It was very easy to find, a lovely oceanside cottage with all of the amenities. It is a modern cottage, spotless, and decorated with flair (beach house theme with blues and greens). Kitty greated us upon our arrival to tell us about the walking trails and the sandy beach literally 5 minutes away by foot. She left us fresh flowers, fresh cod and a bottle of wine. What a warm welcome! We stayed for 3 glorious days, and we walked among goats, watched whales and birds from the private dock which overlooks the ocean, walked on the beach (we were the only ones on the sandy beach!), picked blueberries before breakfast, and relaxed. It is well located on the Western Bay, one hour and a half from St-John's. It is so quiet, and peaceful. You get the impression that it is the only cottage around. No immediate neighbours, and fantastic views of the ocean. We did day trips to charming villages and hurried back to have dinner and watch the sunset on the dock.Kitty showed up before we left to say goodbye. I cannot recommend this place enough! But book early before you intend on going. It is truly a gem.

A magnificent slice of paradise

  • 5 of 5

"We drove all the way from Mississauga, ON, on our inaugural visit to the Rock, and were absolutely stunned by the exquisite beauty of the oceanfront cottage where we would spend the next 13 nights! Kittiwake Cottage fulfilled every dream that we held for a relaxing seaside getaway. The cottage itself is absolutely spotless, and includes most of the amenities you would find in a 5-star resort suite. The million dollar views of Brady's Cove, and further out, Conception Bay can be seen through the large windows on 3 of 4 sides of the cottage. The decor is "Atlantic Canada", with mermaids and whales, seabirds nesting on driftwood, sunfish glass, and ocean-blue domes of light overlooking your shoulder as you read in the corner comfortable chair with fleece blankie wrapped snugly around your knees. The French door at the back wall, over which hangs an antique oar complete with oar pin, beckons you to the large wrap-around deck, and farther down the mown grass path to the whale-watching pier with its two iconic Adirondack chairs bolted to the windy platform, along with 2 dried out lobster traps. And, oh, what a scene to behold! You could awake very early to catch the 0430h dawn ( on the right), with its soft pink clouds heralding the rise of the sun; or you could sit on the deck around 2030h to witness the blazing reds and golds of a Newfoundland sun setting (to your left). Never pull the blinds down, or you could miss a trawler setting out, or the goats and sheep of a local herd coming down the goat paths, or bleating in the distance. Walk up the hill to the lighthouse (whose light you can see from the bedroom window!) and perhaps, as we did, witness humpback whales cavorting, and feeding on the capelin. Or, explore the many paths and trails - you might even find an abandoned root cellar from days of yore. At night, curl up to a good book, and your choice of music on the BOSE system.

Kittiwake Cottage is a perfect getaway for a couple seeking serenity and peace; or as a base for the many day trips you can take throughout the Avalon Peninsula. Kitty is THE consummate hostess - personable, welcoming, and more than willing to share her knowledge of Newfoundland. We arrived to fresh flowers and a lovely bottle of wine, and later in the week, Kitty came in the late afternoon with some fresh, scrumptious cod caught earlier in the day. Thanks++, Kitty!!

We definitely recommend Kittiwake Cottage- we WILL be returning- to NL... & KITTIWAKE!"
