Surrounded by raspberry fields and dairy farms with view of Mt. Baker and Judson Lake this private garden property is perfectly located in northern Whatcom Co. Farmhouse decorated with antiques and modern kitchen (Viking gas range). Romantic master bedroom with exposed cedar planking is in the original Estergreen family's log cabin, now fully up to date. Large living room with wood burning fireplace, octagonal dining room with views to garden on three sides, large deck, two loft bedrooms upstairs with soaker tub. Extensive flower and vegetable gardens. Perfect base for exploring Mt Baker, Bellingham and rural Whatcom county. Excellent cycling and running terrain. Or just stay and cook, eat indoors or out under the wysteria pergola. Great vantage point for Abbotsford Air Show. Half hour from Bellingham, 90 minutes from Seattle, 90 minutes from west side Vancouver. 40 minutes to Lummi Island.
I am an architect and dabble in garden design. Love to cook and entertain. Also a triathlete so cycling and running are big parts of fitness.
Robert Lemon purchased this farmhouse in 1981
Gorgeous five acre historic farmstead dating from the 1880's in northern Whatcom county. Very private and surrounded by raspberry fields and
natural beauty. Lovely garden setting wonderful in winter and summer but best in the spring when the irises and peonies heirloom roses put on a show.
Cozy for two for a romantic getaway, but comfortable sleeps 6. Great kitchen. Location convenient for touring Whatcom county by car on the bike or running. Mt. Baker is 40 minutes away for winter skiing. Bellingham farmer's market a half hour away. Great farmstand in Everson. Wonderful peonie farm and several top notch nurseries nearby.
The photos of this place do not do it justice! It is a beautifully manicured property, lovingly cared for by the owners. It was very clean, as well as stylishly decorated and full of history. The owner Robert was prompt in all his communication with me and was happy to answer any questions. I would absolutely recommend this property, it was a treat to stay there. We cooked a number of meals in the fabulous farmhouse kitchen, and ate under the outdoor pergola. The vegetable garden was a bonus, as Robert told us to help ourselves. We spent most of our time at home, and did a day trip to lake Whatcom which was lovely. A note for future quests, as stated in the listing there is no wifi there (unless they've added it since we stayed) Great if you're trying to unplug, but not ideal if you want to get work done. Fortunately since it is just across the border we were still able to get the telus signal so you don't generally need to use roaming while in the house. WE would love to stay there again :)
Although the drive from Vancouver BC wasn't much more than an hour, I felt like I'd been transported to the South of France or the Umbrian countryside. The uniformly planted rows of raspberry canes that run along the rolling hills and the mountainous backdrop kept reinforcing that impression. This is truly a wonderful place - lush, verdant, scenic, secluded (only in the best sense) and surprisingly convenient. You'll need a car, but all the provisions you'll require are relatively close at hand. Plus there's a traditional kitchen garden filled with seasonal vegetables, herbs and even a couple of fruit trees. I can't think of a more delightful spot to settle in with family and/or friends for a few days or longer of home cooked meals and a lot of good wine.
If you're a gardener, you'll enjoy exploring the benefits of someone else's very hard work. I was sorry to have missed the masses of irises, but there were plenty of other beautiful things growing that were a feast for the eyes - roses, hydrangeas, wisteria - made all the sweeter by the knowledge that I didn't have to lift a finger to maintain it.
The house itself is comfortable, charming, stylish and really quite smart. The rustic elements are there to remind you this was once a farmhouse, but the big gas range, dishwasher and other conveniences let you know it's now a modern gentleman's retreat. It's big enough that you won't get in each other's way, but without losing the coziness. Speaking of cozy, bring lots of reading material because the livingroom is the kind of place you'll want to settle right into with a good book or three. If you've forgotten to bring your own, the bookshelves and tabletops hold all sorts of hidden treasures. They include a number of cookbooks and books on design, in case you're in need of a little extra inspiration.
The only challenging aspect of Estergreen was having to leave it! We'll definitely be back again.
P.S. Here's a bonus: if you're on Rogers, you can still get cell and data coverage from parts of the property without roaming!
Estergreen is a little piece of Heaven. My partner and I have been fortunate to visit a a couple of times. It feels like you've been to the south of France or Tuscany - but its only two hours from Vancouver ! The house is both sophisticated and funky, and all about comfort. And the gardens are an ever-changing delight. The outdoor dining pergola is a gem ! Great cycling and running routes from the farm, fresh local produce and cheese in abundance at near-by markets and interesting vintage finds about. Put this place on your list of great week-end get-aways !
A charming cottage with a lovely garden in a beautiful and unique location. The house is well kept and set up, has a fully equipped kitchen and is very comfortable. Many activities in the area are available and great sightseeing opportunities. The farmstead is closer to Vancouver than was expected and this is a wonderful place to go for a special and relaxing getaway.
Bellingham Market is a half hour drive.
