Why The Owner chose Providence

Under the roof and within the four walls of Athenaeum Row have lived generations young and old, artists and writers of renown, and visiting academic luminaries from around the globe, each lending to a distinguished provenance singular and unique throughout our historic city. It is our hope to continue this tradition of hospitality by extending a warm welcome to those discerning explorers of Providence who seek a 'home away from home'.

Perfection in Providence

My wife and I stayed in this spacious one-bedroom condo with a large, modern kitchen, W/D, and a gigantic living room for two weeks over this past New Year's holiday. Our purpose was to determine whether or not to move to Providence by visiting during the worst season of the year. This was THE Perfect location--a block and a half from the marvelous RISD museum (and great coffee from Bolt) and a block and a half from the downtown. Everything is within walking distance, especially many outstanding restaurants like the Parkside Rotisserie (our favorite, save room for the amazing mixed berry tarte), Hemenway's (terrific seafood), and Capriccio (best veal parmesan anywhere). The area is truly historic and one feels transported back to the 19th century and beyond. Our host was extremely helpful in providing assistance with attractions, restaurants, and the vagaries of Providence parking. We highly recommend you stay here if you visit. We fell in love with Providence and are planning to move there soon.

The location couldn't be better, especially for this Floridian seeking to trade the Sunshine State's July heat for Rhode Island's cool. Located a block from Brown University and another from RISD, this 1845 townhouse is surrounded by history. It is smack in the middle of a walkable neighborhood continuously in existence since the 1630s that boasts one of the largest concentrations of pre-Revolutionary and 19th Century homes in the U.S.

History is literally everywhere. Across the street from the townhouse is the Gov. Stephen Hopkins house, a museum once home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence and ardent Quaker. He finally lived up to his religious creed by freeing his slaves at the end of his life. Brown University a block up the hill is amazing, and you can spend days at RISD looking at its world-class art museum and the artistic works scattered throughout its buildings. The museum has Monets, Renoirs, Rodins, and Picassos.

WaterFire along the Providence River a block down College Hill is a must-see, so plan your trip around its schedule. WaterFire combines an evening of performance artists, living statues and gargoyles, music, processions of firewalkers dressed in Victorian garb who tend the fires, and about 70 to 80 large braziers filled with bonfires along and in the river. The Athenaeum (public library) is right next to the townhouse and was well known to Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, who lived nearby.

A few blocks south of the townhouse is the John Brown House museum, reputedly the first mansion in the U.S. and home to one of the Browns, namesakes for the university. The museum offers a tasteful but unflinching view of how the Browns -- ardent Baptists -- made a fortune off slave-running and rum and then tore themselves apart as they confronted the moral consequences.

A few blocks north, Brown University has a new statue set in the ground that memorializes its ties to the horrors of the slave trade -- a large ball and chain partly buried in the ground with its chains jutting upward, the top link broken clean. A few blocks south we took the Foxpoint ferry to Newport for a wonderful day sightseeing everything from its old Quaker salt-box homes to the Cliff Walk mansions of the Vanderbilts.

Your host Daniel couldn't be more gracious, even if you lock yourselves out at midnight, as we did. He was there waiting with a key when we got back from a great day at Plimoth Plantation. One of the best trips of a lifetime!

This is my favorite place to stay whenever I'm in Providence. Daniel is a great landlord. Love the unit. Has everything I need and is close to everything I need to be close to on Brown Campus. It's elegant. Exquisitely appointed. Comfortable. Quiet. Luxurious. Fabulous. Lovely. Amazing.

I stayed at the home for 12 days and I wish that I didn't have to leave. The finishes, decor, furniture were very nice. I especially appreciated the beautiful artwork and antiques. The location can't be beat. We walked to dinner most nights and we visited the RISD museum - just a block away. Special thanks to the owners for being responsive from booking to checkout. Communication was very prompt and thanks for checking in midway to see if everything was going well. I will be renting again soon.
