Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Municipio III - Il Visconte Castello del Duca

Il Visconte is 17th century farmhouse on the side of a beautiful pine wood.

Il Visconte is seventeenth century farmhouse on the side of a beautiful pine wood. The house which is about 90 sqm, consists of a large living room with a fireplace, a spacious kitchen, a double bedroom, a bedroom with two single beds and a bathroom completely made of travertine marble with a shower and a bath. The house has satellite TV, wifi internet, a kettle, a refrigerator, a washing machine, a dishwasher, a microwave, a kettle, dishes and cutlery, a hairdryer, bed linen and towels, heating and ample parking.

Castello del Duca, also known in the past as Casale della Marciliana (or Marcigliana), is an ancient fortified hamlet that dates back to the Middle Ages. It stands on a hill on the outskirts of Rome in a dominant position and enjoys enchanting views. On one side we see the Marcigliana Nature Reserve, which is part of the estate, and on the other we see the beautiful Roman countryside across the Tiber plain as far as the Monti Reatini.

Despite being surrounded by a beautiful estate of about 700 acres, Castello del Duca is located just 15 km from the centre of Rome. It is connected to the centre of the city by means of the Via Salaria and the railway line Settebagni-Roma Tiburtina-Fiumicino Airport. The Settebagni station is less than 10 minutes walk from Castello del Duca, where there is a train every 15 minutes which reaches downtown in about 30 minutes and Fiumicino Airport in just 1 hour.

The village of Settebagni, which is less than a 5 minutes walk away, is extremely safe and you can easily purchase most of the things you may need at two supermarkets and various local shops.

Within the estate of Castello del Duca, you can take long walks on the huge property which includes fields, oak and pine woods and olive groves.

Castello del Duca was built in the Middle Ages on the ruins of a Roman villa. From the beginning of the eleventh century it was known as a property belonging to the Abbey of Farfa, with the name of Marcilianus, or “Casale della Marciliana (or Marcigliana)”. The name was derived from “fundus Marcellianus”, or “praedium Marcellianum”, because in Roman times it was property of the Marcelli, descendants of the Claudii, to whom the Senate and the People of Rome had given these lands. From the twelfth century onwards, Castello del Duca was owned by the church of Santa Maria in Via Lata, and later by several noble families: the Barberini in 1600s, the Gabrielli in 1700s, the Carpegna in 1800s and the Grazioli from the second half of 1800s to the present day. Between the sixteenth and the seventeenth century, due to the needs of these noble families, the medieval fortified hamlet was renovated taking on the characteristics of the present day.

Two centuries before the traditional foundation of Rome (754 BC), Castello del Duca had probably served as an original nucleus and subsequently, as an acropolis of the ancient Latin town of Crustumerium, whose importance since the ninth century BC was largely due to the control of previous Via Salaria and the Tiber River.

Crustumerium began to lose its importance in about the fifth century B.C. and later its territory was divided amongst the Roman families during Republican and Imperial ages.

According to Tito Livio and Dionigi di Alicarnasso, the famous 'Rape of the Sabine Women', also involved the town of Crustumerium. At the end of that war, its defeated inhabitants, were deported to Rome and their territory was assigned to the Tribù Crustumina (or Clustumina) and Claudia.

Since 1989, the area of the town of Crustumerium is entirely subject to archaeological limitations and with the establishment of Marcigliana Nature Reserve in 1997, it is also subject to landscape and environmental regulations. There are ongoing excavations by the Italian Department of Archeology in collaboration with the University of Groningen. A necropolis was found inside the archaeological site with several thousands of tombs dating from the ninth to the sixth century BC.

Wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 enjoyed staying in this cottage on the grounds of a medieval castle. Fabio was extremely helpful with information about the area. Although we had a rental car, the house is a short walk to the train station and a lovely town with stores and restaurants. It was 18 minutes by train to get to a main train station in Rome. I would highly recommend it.

Wunderschönes geräumiges Doppelhaus in idyllischer Lage am nördlichen Stadtrand Roms

  • 5 of 5

Vermieter sehr nett.

schönes Haus in einer noch schöneren Umgebung

  • 5 of 5

AMAZING !!!

  • 5 of 5

We had the best holiday there. The host is very nice and helpful. The place is amazing, as well as the surrounding. There is some noise from the nearby train track, but other than that, the castle and the location itself are beyond imagination. It's a real fairytale. The location is excellent, far from the noisy and crowded city center of Rome, and access (with a car) is very easy (no toll to pay if you stay in and around Rome). Thanks aain for this amazing experience !
