WHAT OUR GUESTS ARE SAYING:

'Of all the villas/condos at Kaluakoi, this one is definitely the best situated with the best view. The moment we arrived, we felt the stress of our work lives melt away. The cottage is more than perfect. Molokai was exactly what I was hoping for, slightly off the beaten track with a charming funkiness.'

-John and Crista

'Your 'Home Away From Home' is very cozy with one of the most magnificent views available..... watch the ocean waves crashing against the shoreline as the birds walk around on the lanai is breathtaking. We have enjoyed immensely our stay here and will have many pleasant memories to fall back upon in the future..... We would definitely love to come back to your 'Home' again.'

-Cindy & Bob

The first morning (and every other morning as well) we had our breakfast on the lanai and watched 'our' ocean and 'our' beach. This was absolutely paradise. It was perfect for us. We met lots of very interesting people and had the best anniversary imaginable...

About Cher Trenholme

Aloha to all my family of guests past and future! I am currently living in Florida with my new husband Richard, however, my heart is always in Molokai where I was teaching 2nd grade in 2006. I enjoy travel and have recently visited Peru, China, 7 Western European countries, as well as 10 National Parks and numerous Nat. Monuments and state Parks in the Southwest. We also stayed 2 weeks this summer in my favorite location, Cottage 2A, Molokai. We explored the east end, swam in the waterfall pools at the Halawa Falls, snorkeled right out front and sipped wine on the lanai each night to a majestic sunset over Oahu. Please feel free to contact me or my assistant Michelle; you'll find I'm an accessible, helpful and friendly hostess! I know you will fall in love with Molokai and Cottage 2A, as I did!

Cher Trenholme purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Cher Trenholme chose Maunaloa

The moment I saw Cottage 2A, right on the ocean, I fell in love! I love being 100 steps to the sand, living in my fully furnished tropical home, which I am delighted to share with you. We had been looking on Maui, but this is truly paradise, unspoiled and uncrowded Hawaii as it has been for centuries.

What makes this cottage unique

Located at the quiet, secluded northern edge of the Kaluakoi Villas, Cottage 2A affords privacy, spectacular views and the constant music of the waves. You will think you are on your own private island! The ultimate in relaxation.

Magic on Molokai at Cottage 2-A

  • 5 of 5

I use the word “magic” to describe cottage 2-A. Located at the intersection of two remarkable beaches, it is only a fifteen-minute walk (or a five-minute drive) to a beach that is three miles of perfect, uninterrupted sand. I was often the only person on a beach. A “crowd” is six people. You got that right: six people on a three-mile strand of sand.

The cottage itself is idyllic with floor to ceiling screened windows on three sides, a thirty-foot ceiling, comfortable furniture with a tropical feel, a lanai that puts you amid nature (including turkeys who drop by), and a sleeping alcove open to the surf that lulls you gently to sleep. It comes with beach chairs, boogie boards, towels, and such. The cottage is immaculately clean, and recently repainted and refitted with new screens.

Cher and her associates are exemplary communicators. They will respond to your questions within 24 hours.

The first sign you see leaving the airport says, “This is Molokai. Slow down.” That is true in every way. The cottage has a TV, but in seven days, I never turned it on. Average driving speed is about 35 mph on quiet roads. I once drove all the way into town and never encountered another vehicle.

2-A is both remote and convenient. It is about 25 minutes from the cottage to the main town (Kaunakakai) along a road that is dry beauty. It is only a little more than an hour to the east end with its lush tropical quality. By urban standards, what is twenty-five minutes for groceries, an artists' collective, or one of the best ice cream cones anywhere? A tiny milk-and-eggs store is on premises, and a country general store is just eight minutes to Maunaloa.

The historical and cultural sites, and the geographical wonders, are just as close. I will never forget Kaulapapa. Molokai accommodates tourists, but it is a working island with real people who have decided, as a community, not to touristify.

Yes, the cottage is located on the grounds of what was once a hot resort that no longer functions. Some of the buildings are not used today. But the grounds are very well kept, and the empty buildings are in decent shape.

Cottage 2-A is indeed the best location at Kephui Beach. In fact, I think just right for those who seek not just to substitute a frenetic everyday life with a frenetic vacation pace, but who long for resonance with the sea, trade winds that refresh the soul, an enlarging cultural experience, and a time away that is beauty itself.

Cottage by the sea

  • 5 of 5

We spent three lovely days at Cher's beachside cottage on Kepuhi beach. I cannot say enough about the location. Where else can you wake up to watch the waves breaking on the shore? Later, you can enjoy the sunset from the lanai. In between, experience authentic Hawaii by exploring Molokai, which is very different from the other islands. No crowds, no fancy restaurants, no traffic. One day we went to the next beach to the North, Make Horse, and most of the afternoon had it all to ourselves! These are not great swimming spots, but incredibly beautiful.

The cottage is very comfortable and is fully stocked. Much of it is well used, but the king bed is new, the bathroom was just retiled, the TV is nice, and there are beach chairs, boogie boards, etc. It is a shame that the hotel and golf course are decaying around you, but the pool is nice and also has a wonderful view. We would definitely stay here again if we return to Molokai.

Great place in an amazing location

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time staying for 12 nights here! Michelle was great to deal with and Carol the caretaker there was attentive and willing to help with anything. The location being so close to the ocean was amazing and we'd definitely stay here again.

Nice twelve days at Cottage 2A

  • 5 of 5

Cottage 2A was very clean and comfortable. Loved the new paint, the comfy bed, and the furniture arrangement. (The kitchen could use better lighting.) We liked the very private location. This cottage is very close to the beach, which is both a plus and a minus. It’s only a few steps to the sand and the Hawaiian monk seals napping on the beach - a great view of the surfers - but on the other hand, the ocean is really loud!
