Craftsman style gated estate on 1/2 acre with heated pool in downtown Santa Barbara. Very rare. Built in 1894 and remodeled in 1998. The house is 4,000 sqf. Walk to dinner, movies or just around the block. There are 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, large living room, dining room, family room, stocked library, balcony, decks, outdoor barbecue, heated pool and a large backyard with rose garden and fruit trees.

Why Maria & Robert chose Upper East

We own 2 homes on this block because the Upper Eastside is the best place to be in Santa Barbara. Period. There are other nice areas, but we appreciate the elegant homes and the sidewalks. We spend many afternoons just walking around the neighborhood. For the most part each home in this area is old, large, well maintained and architecturally distinct. Each block provides a pleasant visual experience each time you walk by. And, the central part of the city is just a few blocks away and the Mission is a few blocks the other way. It is location, location, location.

What makes this house unique

115 East Islay was built in 1894 by the Edwards family who owned the whole block. The house was built with old growth redwood which was rolled off the ships, pushed ashore, milled into lumber down by the beach, and driven up State Street in horse drawn wagons. It survived the 1925 earthquake and everything else that nature and people have thrown at it for over 120 years. It is an honor to be inside the house with all of its hidden stories.

The house sits on a 1/2 acre lot, with the house situated in the middle of the lot. You get a country feel while being in the city. And Islay Street is not a busy street, like Santa Barbara and Anacapa streets.

The house is located downtown Santa Barbara in a residential area and in the middle of a block. We ask our guests to keep noise low, specially at night time. We ask to keep any gathering indoors after 10 pm as voices and noise can be heard by all neighbors around. Parties are not allowed, please contact owner if you are planning any special gathering.

Beautiful place, great location

We had a fantastic time at 115 East Islay. We were able to sleep 5 couples and two single guys very comfortably...we were walking distance to downtown... short Uber rides to anywhere else in the city... the pool was wonderful... definitely worth a stay!

Unique Property, great location, needs some pest control

This is a charming house in a great part of town. Beautiful kitchen, lots of space. Great for a group. There were a lot of ants in the house (even upstairs) so some pest control is needed. Besides that it was a great space.

Great Location! Great Hosts! Spacious House

We just ended our trip there, the house is beautiful. A couple things, the house is older, some of the doors didn't work, the lighting is dull in the house and wireless is in and out.

The house is spacious and you can't get a better location. We loved spending the weekend with our family there. Its a perfect house for a family reunion, friend trip, or quick getaway. Thanks again

So much potential, but sad excuse for vacation rental

Tired old dirty house filled with garage sale/goodwill mis-matched furniture. It has so much potential but is currently in a state of disrepair and neglect. The windows were filthy, covered in cobwebs. Light bulbs were out or missing, some rooms had no lights at all. Hot water in one of the bathrooms did not work. The wifi did not work. The kitchen utensils were the dreaded rental house hand-me down variety - either dirty, dull, or needing replacement. Plates and glasses were dirty. None of the bathrooms have toiletries except hand soap. Towels were smelly, old, and neglected. Beds were uncomfortable with old lumpy pillows. The grounds were unmaintaned with rotting fruit on the ground.

We brought up some of these issues with the owners who did a lame attempt to make it right. At one point the owner came to the house unannounced at 10pm with my family sleeping. They were startled awake to hear movement in the yard and a flashlight. I went out to confront the intruder who turned out the be the owner trying to remedy the wifi. Incredibly invasive and the wifi was never fixed throughout the duration of the stay.

At the current price I cannot reccomend the house in any capacity. I'd give one star but the pool was well maintianed and the house was beautiful despite its sad state of neglect.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry you didn't have a great experience at our home, as others did. These are the measures we have taken: 1) The wifi was finally fixed by Cox Cable. 2) The house is 120 years old and was the first house on the block, not a brand new hotel. It has its own charm. 3) There is an orchard in the backyard and the fruit does fall when windy. All fruit has been picked and picked up. We will try to keep up with this in the future, but weather is unpredictable. 4) We had an oak moth hatch and a cob web problem. Your complaint is valid. We have cleaned up the oak moths and all the cob webs. 5) We did buy some of the furniture at garage sales and/or Craigslist. We thought the furniture was comfortable and we apologize if it was not up to your standards. Please have in mind, this is not a hotel, but a home. 6) Towels, sheets and pillows have been replaced. 7) We are very sorry for our intrusion, but we thought you wanted us to try to fix the internet as soon as possible. Amazing Santa Barbara Stay

We were married in Santa Barbra and stayed in the house with family for the weekend. The host was very nice and the house was fantastic! The beds are very comfortable and the house is set up with everything that you need. It is in a great location, close enough to walk everywhere! Thank you for your hospitality, you made our weekend.

2+ stars and a mouse...

I wish this was a glowing review! There is so much character in this old house to go with the PERFECT downtown location in Santa Barbara. I just can't figure out if the positives outweigh the negatives or vice versa! ? ! So I am torn between a 2 or 3 star review.

The owners were so easy and gracious to deal with that I would give THEM a 5 star rating. However, perhaps it is their easy going nature that allows some details in the home to be lacking? As we rented this home for a family gathering and housed all 14 of us...that was perfect. The spaciousness of this old Victorian is charming with so much original woodwork and the like with a huge kitchen that must have been remodeled to current cooking standards around fifteen or so years ago. Bathrooms are pretty original so if you're looking for modern showers don't plan on it. As I'm a tub person, an original claw footed tub was terrific!

BUT as I'm a neat freak --things that didn't meet my standards were: stained kitchen and bath towels, grimy and disorganized cupboards inside and out, spiderwebs and dust in light fixtures and shelves, and the potential of a gorgeous landscape but just not well maintained. (Weeds, spoiled fruit on the ground, mud spots where grass should grow..). Things I apparently take for granted: wash clothes, travel soap and shampoo, working wifi, gas grill... This is my lack of VRBO experience most likely, as we typically stay at hotels. But they are the little things that glam up a place.

Everything in this house seemed to be extremely well used! (Worn?). Kitchen cupboards were filled with haphazzard utensils, cook wear and the odd and end ingredients ...almost like everything you would take to the Goodwill after your garbage sale. As I own several vacation properties, the untidiness of this and general grime was disturbing but we only booked three nights so I didn't fret much....until the last day when I discovered A MOUSE had been on the kitchen counter and eaten through a bag of chips!! UGHHH That was the final straw for me. With that event I can't give this a great recommendation. Just not hygienic enough for me. But THERE IS SO MUCH POTENTIAL AT THIS PLACE!! The owners have it up for sale and I hope they find the perfect buyer that is ready to restore this amazing place to its glory days! The space was superb for a large group of family!

Owner's Response: Nichole, I am sorry for your bad time. The house is 120 years old. In response to your letter, we have painted the kitchen. The mouse is gone. We can't water lawns in Santa Barbara and the fruit is subject to weather (we will try to pick up everything before a guest arrives). We always thought it was a luxury to have an orchard on one half acre in downtown Santa Barbara. Now, we see that not everybody appreciates it as we do. Regarding the full kitchen shelves, I will make sure they are more organized. I like to leave some basic cooking ingredients for future guests. People can use them or not. We don't provide toiletries, only liquid hand soap. Bar soaps would have to be thrown away every week and I consider shampoo as a personal item. Again, we apologize for the bad time you had, but thank your for sharing your experience in order to make our home better. Robert and Maria

The house is exceptionally located to enjoy Santa Barbara. You can walk on sidewalks to museums, restaurants, bars, movies and shopping. The beach is only 5 minutes away by car or a 15 minute walk. Walk to the beach and take the electric bus home up State Street. The Mission of Santa Barbara is five blocks away.
