Craftsman style gated estate on 1/2 acre with heated pool in downtown Santa Barbara. Very rare. Built in 1894 and remodeled in 1998. The house is 4,000 sqf. Walk to dinner, movies or just around the block. There are 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, large living room, dining room, family room, stocked library, balcony, decks, outdoor barbecue, heated pool and a large backyard with rose garden and fruit trees.
We own 2 homes on this block because the Upper Eastside is the best place to be in Santa Barbara. Period. There are other nice areas, but we appreciate the elegant homes and the sidewalks. We spend many afternoons just walking around the neighborhood. For the most part each home in this area is old, large, well maintained and architecturally distinct. Each block provides a pleasant visual experience each time you walk by. And, the central part of the city is just a few blocks away and the Mission is a few blocks the other way. It is location, location, location.
115 East Islay was built in 1894 by the Edwards family who owned the whole block. The house was built with old growth redwood which was rolled off the ships, pushed ashore, milled into lumber down by the beach, and driven up State Street in horse drawn wagons. It survived the 1925 earthquake and everything else that nature and people have thrown at it for over 120 years. It is an honor to be inside the house with all of its hidden stories.
The house sits on a 1/2 acre lot, with the house situated in the middle of the lot. You get a country feel while being in the city. And Islay Street is not a busy street, like Santa Barbara and Anacapa streets.
This is a gorgeous property, well maintained Victorian located in Downtown Santa Barbara. Walking distance to the Mission. Owners live nearby and are very responsive to any request you have. We were a group of 10 ladies who have an annual reunion in destinations around California. We slept 10 very comfortably. Spacious, well appointed. I would recommend this location to all.
The only comments (remember this is a group of 10 ladies) that I received from the group are as follows:
The kitchen is spacious and well appointed. If you want to do any serious cooking, bring your own knives.
The pool can be heated, but is not kept heated. In fairness to the owners, we did not request that the heat be turned on. Though listening to the swimmers in the group make that "epping" noise was entertaining.
The kitchen does not have an American style toaster. They do have a pannini machine that can make toast, but if you have American style toast buffs, bring your own toaster. One of the upstairs bathrooms doesn't sport adequate curtains for the more modest guest. Not a deterrent, just drape one of the more than adequate towels over the window to preserve your modesty.
Again, lovely lovely property. All of us would stay there again. Thank you to the owners for an awesome getaway weekend.
The house was perfect for our family. We started out a little rocky but the owner was quick to fix the problems. We would most definitely stay here again if we were ever in Santa Barbara for vacation. We loved how spacious everything was. There was plenty of room for everything. Thank you for a great vacation home.
We had a great time in this wonderful home that's in a quiet neighborhood but within walking distance of everything on State Street. We were in SB for the wedding of our son and this charming house worked very well for a dozen family members. Lots or room, well-maintained, and responsibly managed (thanks Rusty). Highly recommended.
There were 10 of us ranging from tween to senior and none of us can imagine a better place for our family reunion. It felt much more like a home than a rental, with plenty of nooks for quiet time a great kitchen and dining room where the whole gang could gather. We could walk to downtown (or take the little electric bus part of the way on a lazy day). we were within easy reach of the beach, hiking trails, the Botanic Garden, the Mission,... We picked peaches in the tiny orchard out back, watched a bunny nibble on rose petals, swam in the pool, played cards in the den, chilled on the patio,... Rusty had his office next door and was so very helpful, providing information, directions, recommendations, etc. All in all, it was the perfect setting for a fun family reunion!
My family and I loved our stay here! Gorgeous property, well-appointed, quiet, tons of space and light, just a great place to relax with the family. As a plus, the hosts were accessible and friendly. I highly recommend. Many thanks!
We attended my nephews wedding in downtown Santa Barbara and the location of this home was perfect for keeping all within walking distance of restaurants, shopping, parks, playgrounds etc. Visitors remarked how cramped they were in the expensive rooms they rented and wished they had thought of this option for their visit. The spaciousness of the house and the layout of the rooms allowed for everyone to enjoy gathering and privacy when needed. The grounds were lovely and provided tasty options as well as beauty! The heated pool was enjoyed by all and a real plus for the grandchildren!
The house is exceptionally located to enjoy Santa Barbara. You can walk on sidewalks to museums, restaurants, bars, movies and shopping. The beach is only 5 minutes away by car or a 15 minute walk. Walk to the beach and take the electric bus home up State Street. The Mission of Santa Barbara is five blocks away.
