About the property

Modern Home Bright With Natural Light And Beautiful Carpentry.

We call this house 'South Sedgwick' because of its location on a piece of land formerly used by the Sedgwick family for picnicking--an ideal spot for relaxation with stunning views of Monument Mountain and Ice Glen.

The house was built by the hands of its owners. Finished in 2014 with ash hardwood floors, custom white pine trim and mahogany decks. The interior has an open-concept floor plan inviting abundant natural light. Custom built-in features include a handmade nook bench looking out over an expansive nature preserve, a vibracustic hydrotherapy spa tub, an upstairs coffee porch, and more.

We have a first floor master suite. If you require handicap access please contact us regarding your needs.

Beautiful, big back yard opens into 11 acres of wooded land, where the Konkapot brook runs nearby. For those with a sense of adventure, trek through the woods and use this brook as a push off spot for leisurely kayaking through nearby rivers with gorgeous natural vistas. For the less experienced adventurer, there is an easily accessible kayak push off .1 miles away. Toward the western border of the house lies scenic railway tracks, now concealed by forest. The historic train station is only .3 miles away.

This prime location is in the center of the cultural epicenter known as the Berkshires. Nearby attractions include: Tanglewood, Berkshire Theater Festival, Naumkegg Gardens, and Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.

Please note that if this property is booked our 2nd beautiful property may be available. "The Gatehouse on Golden Hill." #932941.

About Teva Smith

Nick and I bought this house in 2007. I was eager to learn about building and Nick an old friend, who at the age of four had asked for a tool belt for Christmas was willing to help. We started to plan a renovation for tand realized there really was not much we could save. Nick and I then went through a process of permitting and deconstructing and then rebuilding the house by hand. Using the best materials and Nick's spectacular design, we constructed an amazing home that we think you will love. Our story is one of perseverance, hard work and creative ideas which resulted in a truly uplifting story and you will feel that way while staying here.

Teva Smith purchased this house in 2007

Why Teva Smith chose Berkshires

We loved the location! The house has a side walk in front that goes into downtown Stockbride. The house sits on 11 acres of land. We are located at the epicenter of the premier cultural destination in America known as the Berkshires. We are a short drive to Lee, Lenox and Great Barrington.

What makes this house unique

We love the views from this property. We were excited when we found out the Sedgwick family used to picnic on the land because of the unique views.

The many outdoor seating areas are truly special as is the bright and modern inside.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your home was lovely and filled with lots of love (and lots of karaoke singing) this weekend. Our friend has cancer and this was her wish. Our children said your home was the favorite part of the trip. 💜

Thank you again! Next time we visit we will bring you a treat to enjoy from Mystic, Ct!

Take care!!!!!

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in February and had a wonderful time at this lovely house. We can say that we got the best of all seasons as we started off with the entire property in snow and ended up with Spring-like conditions by the end of the week! Plenty of room for two families and lots to do in and out of the house. House is very comfortable with lots of light and every amenity from kitchen/living areas to wifi/speakers/screens to the vibra-acoustic tub/sauna. House is secluded thanks to the large property but close to the main road. Hard to get the kids to leave the house as we explored the many acres of land surrounding the house and the stream that connected to the main river that can be explored by boat. We even enjoyed a warm night with the outdoor fire pit and view of the stars. House is in a perfect location with a 10 minute walk to Stockbridge and a 10 minute drive to Great Barrington. Short drive to Pittsfield, Lenox, and Lee for museums, skiing, hikes, and great food. Teva was extremely helpful and had great advice for places to go in the area. He went the extra mile by even getting us a new blender when we found that the one at the house wasn't working! Now that we had a glimpse of what summer would be like at the house, we will have to rent again. Thanks so much for an amazing stay!

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 3 families just returned from a long weekend at "South Sedgwick" and had a wonderful stay. The house is beautiful and perfectly located within a 1/2 mile from Stockbridge and also less than 15 minutes from Great Barrington. The set-up is perfect for a group of friends to stay together since there are two large master bedrooms, two additional bedrooms, and plenty of space to hang out together both downstairs and upstairs. The owner was very responsive and was so kind to leave us Prosecco, fresh eggs, apple cider and donuts upon our arrival. We enjoyed ALL of those treats. Looking forward to returning again next year! Thank you so much!

Beautiful, Spacious, Luxurious, Comfortable Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay in this beautiful home. It was so comfortable and even more spacious than the photos let on! We enjoyed the privacy of the large lot that the house is on, and enjoyed a couple of walks around the property even though it was in the chilly Fall. The Owners were very friendly, and made an effort to check in with us during our stay. Also, the wonderful greeting with Prosecco, cheeses, local fruits, and crackers was genuinely enjoyed, as we were all foodies. The kitchen was very spacious and well-stocked with stainless steel pots and pans, etc. for cooking, which we did quite a bit of. Two words-- Downstairs Tub (its musical!)... an awesome luxury upgrade.

This place is very close to town, and also easy to access the highway that takes you to Great Barrington. The only issue I had was that the highway was bit close to the house and we could hear cars passing through the downstairs master bedroom wall at night. In waking hours it was not an issue at all because we weren't on a quiet retreat (we were having a marriage ceremony and celebration), and the well-planned layout of the house (with incredible views of the property) really makes you feel like you are far away from everything. They do mention the highway somewhere in the listing, so it wasn't a huge shock or anything. Overall, we loved this place (and it will hold a special place in our hearts because we were married there!) and would come back again. Thank you!

Thanksgiving and Birthday Celebrations- a real treat!

  • 5 of 5

We were greeted in Stockbridge by a surprising foot of snow and Teva's presentation of cider, delicious donuts, Persecco, cheese & crackers, orchard fresh apples and eggs! A delightful way to begin a memorable holiday weekend with 3 generations of family ranging in age from 80 years young to 1 year old. The house contains so many amenities, the kitchen is extremely well provisioned and there's plenty of space for young and old alike to enjoy. The firepit was a favorite gathering spot in the evenings and everyone enjoyed trekking through the property, playing snow frisbee, and making a snowman. Festive Stockbridge center provided picture taking opportunities and a warming spot by the fire at the Inn. A day at nearby Kripalu was a highlight for the dad and daughter birthday celebrants. Although we never needed to contact him, Teva made certain we knew he was there for us to help in any way. We'd love to visit here again and highly recommend this property.

Sept - 1-Sept 5 2016 stay in the Berkshires

  • 5 of 5

We had a really wonderful time as a family staying in the lovely home owned by Teva & Nick. Instead of buying more "stuff" as Christmas presents, we have started to create family memories by getting together as a family for a long weekend somewhere. For three years now we have done a weekend in the Poconos, a weekend in the Adirondacks and now a weekend in the Berkshires...always trying to find a location convenient for the family to converge ( we are 3 generations coming from Philadelphia, Boston and NYC). This Berkshire experience was by far the best! The home was really well laid out making room for all of us (6 adults & 3 children ages 2-9) with all of the modern and useful conveniences.. There was plenty to do in and around where we were staying and it was within walking distance of the cute town of Stockbridge...While Teva couldn't promise good weather, we certainly had it and that made the time there just lovely for walking, hiking, golfing, enjoying the deck, etc. It was so very special to have Teva's Dad, Peter, meet us on the 1st with champagne, fresh strawberries, cheese & crackers... We also helped ourselves to their garden produce and enjoyed grilling our meals and relaxing by the fire pit. It couldn't have been better... no one wanted to leave on Monday Labor Day (9/5). I would definitely recommend this home and this type of vacation to others...and we hope to visit again too... Thank you for the special memories...

History of Stockbridge:

Stockbridge was first settled by English missionaries in 1734. The town has a tradition as an art colony. The sculptor Daniel Chester French lived and worked at his home and studio called Chesterwood. Norman Rockwell painted many of his works in Stockbridge, home to the Norman Rockwell Museum. James Taylor lived and sang about Stockbridge in his song sweet baby James.

On the border of the Province of Massachusetts Bay there lies a gentle valley indented by low, wooded mountains, each of a contour strikingly unlike its neighbor. The river of this 'Happy Valley' hesitates and lingers on the edge of that luminous, green bowl of forest and meadow, mean- while changes her accustomed dancing, vivacious step, and walks serenely in a curved path west and north across the lovely plain of Stockbridge, tracing a double, willow- fringed ox-bow, on which the birch canoe must travel five times as far as the horseman who rides from bridge to bridge.

This Taconic-Hoosac bowl in which Stockbridge lies was a home of the Mohekanew or Muh-he-ka-nuk, the people of the continually flowing waters, who, in past unknown suns, ranged far northwest. Here 'mid the softer hills of the Green Mountain range the tube told the hours of the day by mountain shadows, the sundial of the savage. Wnau-ti-kook is the first to become wrapped in shade as the sun falls below her summit. Above Rattlesnake or Deowkook- Hill of the Wolves- stands the north star, their compass of the night, whilst Orion served as their clock. Captain Konkapot's name for Rattlesnake Mountain was Mau-ska-fee-haunk when he indicated the north boundary of the tribe's lands of 'Housatonack [1] -allias Westonhook' - deeded to the whites ' in consideration of Four Hundred and Sixty Pounds, Three barrels of Sider and thirty quarts of Rum. ' The north line of Westenhook patent probably ran within half a league of the enchanting wild-wood park on Mr. Daniel French's estate at Glendale.

Personal Favorites:

Downtown Stockbridge is a wonderful and charming town. Big old mansions that are awe inspiring line the streets. There are restaurants and boutiques. The town is picturesque. Near by towns, Lenox, Great Barrington, Lee and Pittsfield offer a variety of restaurants shops, spas, trails beautiful views etc...
