Both born and raised in Healdsburg, CA, we have been coming to the Hat Creek area for over 50 years like many from Sonoma County. We have lived in the town of Old Station for the past ten years. We recently sold JJ's Cafe in Old Station in 2013 and are enjoying retirement in this beautiful mountain town. If you ever have a question on the wonderful things to do in the area, please let us know.
The Owner purchased this cabin in 2003
Our family has spent countless hours remodeling and fixing up this property. This cabin has been enjoyed by our family and friends for many years. Enjoy the simple pleasures of it.
The area has so much to offer, not only Lassen National Park but many more hidden places and scenic spots.
Great cabin! easy to get to (make sure you have a map before you leave since there is no cell signal) and feels like you are in the forest. It is in a small community of Old Station, right on Hwy 44 but far enough from road to be quite. While we stayed there in fall and it was raining, in summer it would be even better. Outdoor picnic area, lots of parking and you are a stone's throw away from the forest. Lassen, as well as many other local attraction are close and easy to get to. Despite being remote, you have wifi so you can stay connected and the only thing I would change is the VCR ... kinda anachronistic in this day and age. Beds are comfortable, kitchen very well stocked and you can cooked pretty much anything you wanted to. Owners are welcoming and friendly and helpful.
It was the perfect place to use as a base to visit Lassen National Park. Very well equipped kitchen and comfortable bedrooms and living area. The outside area has a large picnic table for mornings and evenings. I enjoyed staying there very much. Owners were helpful when we arrived. I would go back in a heartbeat.
Comfortable cabin with three bedrooms but only one small bathroom. Available washer and dryer was very nice. Hosts were very helpful and friendly, and we enjoyed two meals in JJ's restaurant that the hosts formerly owned. Friendly townspeople in restaurant and market. Convenient location to Lassen National Park.
The property is very easy to find, just two turns from the highway but secluded enough that you can still feel nature. The house/cabin itself is comfortable and spacious. There's a propane grill, full kitchen with the normal amenities, WiFi (a must for my teenagers), a washer/dryer (bring your own soap!), a screen-in porch, a TV/VCR and a quite nice collection of VHS tapes (including the complete Star Wars & Indiana Jones sagas!), outdoor firepit & picnic tables, board games... It basically had everything for all of us (with kids from 4-18 years old) to be happy.
The location was perfect and central for our trip itinerary: Mt Lassen hikes, Subway Cave, and Burney Falls. The Hat Creek Radio Observatory (with SETI's Allen Telescope Array) is also close, but only open M-F closing at 3:00pm... But well worth a look with a self-guided tour during normal hours.
John & Judy are easy to talk to and kind. They used to run JJ's Cafe, which is the only restaurant in Old Station... It's now under different ownership, and the food was exceptional! They make their own corned beef, using local grass-fed beef. And their pastrami sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I have ever had... We returned for breakfast, and it was also great! Really good biscuits and gravy, nice traditional American breakfast options, superb pancakes, and the corned beef hash was simply the best.
For anybody looking for a quaint place to stay with no hassles and with most of the comforts of home, I would highly recommend staying at John & Judy's cozy cabin.
My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was a convenient distance to Lassen Volcanic National Park for all of our explorations. We found the cabin to be just as described. We were able to cook our meals in the well-stocked kitchen and especially loved the spice rack! It was quiet at the cabin, and we enjoyed unwinding in the evening with an old movie or two. We would happily stay again if we find ourselves in the area.
The location was perfect for our family's use as a home base to make trips to Lassen each day. We have 3 children and it was not easy to find something big enough and not too distant to the park to accomodate us but this house was just fine with its three bedrooms.
We followed the owners' and other guests' advice and brought our groceries in so were just fine. There isn't much in Old Station. In any case, we love to cook and had all the necessary amenities in the kitchen, as well as the barbecue outside.
Luckily there is wifi service in the home as we had no cellular service in the area.
