Description

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday lodge in McKinley Park - King's Deer Lodge at Denali

The perfect wilderness retreat from Alaska families to world travelers.

King's Deer Lodge gives you the freedom to experience Alaska without the commercialized bustle of Denali Park central. Enjoy views of the Alaska Range from every window and embark on local adventures of every kind.

King's Deer Lodge is a beautiful log home situated on five wooded acres 9 miles from Denali National Park Road. 229 Parks Restaurant & Tavern and the Prey restaurant are within a mile and open during the summer season. Denali National Park has visitor services year round. Please contact us for event size and pricing and for large group discounts.

The main floor of the lodge is lighted by large picture windows and rustic stained glass lamps. The kitchen is equipped with double ovens and a large refrigerator. There are two dining tables and stoneware dishes and utensils for 12. A Natuzzi leather couch provides rest and relaxation while a large selection of DVDs is available for entertainment.

Upstairs is the family room and three bedrooms. The McKinley Suite consists of the spacious master bedroom with a king size bed, queen bed, private bathroom, and jetted tub. The Bush Pilot room is furnished with a Queen bed. The Bear room has a double bed. There is a shared bathroom down the hall with a shower and large vanity. Large groups may request additional mattresses and sleeping bags.

Guests at King's Deer Lodge are responsible for meals and general housekeeping during their stay. We recommend purchasing groceries before you come to Denali. Anchorage, Wasilla, or Three Bears at Talkeetna road junction have reasonable prices. Check-in is 4pm and check-out is 11am.

Our family or the summer caretakers may take residence in the basement and use the garage during your stay. We access the basement living quarters through the garage and kitchen and try to keep our presence to a minimum.

We offer the following add-ons as fees to our reservations:

Iditarod Bush Plane flight for up to 3 persons $398 per flight

Car rental for 5 persons Anchorage - Denali - Anchorage $149

Roundtrip SUV & driver for 8 persons Anchorage - Denali $849

Wonderful!

Beautiful home. Exactly as described. Ben, the caretaker, greeted us warmly when we arrived. He informed us of his schedule and the need to pass through the kitchen when he left for work at 6am. This did not affect us in any way since the bedrooms are all upstairs. We enjoyed walking the trails around the property and the beautiful dogs that stopped by for belly rubs in the evenings. Great proximity to Denali and dining.

Peaceful Setting

  • 4 of 5

The home was accurately described on the website. The furnishing were comfortable and in good condition. The home was spacious, both inside and the deck area. It was easy to get to, quiet and felt safe. It was nice to open the windows and let the fresh air in. The kitchen appliances were nice, other than we experienced some difficulty with getting the dishwasher to start. It might be helpful to have some instructions included in the information notebook about how to operate the dishwasher. It was great to have lots of spices in the kitchen. We cooked out on the grill one night, which worked great. We would recommend staying here to others.

The property was clean other than some stains on the carpet upstairs. The faucet in the kitchen sink dripped and we were unable to get it to stop. It didn't really bother us, but we assumed that quite a bit of water was being lost and the sink was getting stained from the constant dripping of water. The stains from the water that previous guests commented about didn't cause us a concern.

We really enjoyed the Creekside Cafe, which was about 5-6 miles south on Highway 3 toward Anchorage. We had dinner there AND ordered boxed lunches for our day in Denali. Both were excellent and the customer service there was great. We also stopped in Talkeetna on the way up from Anchorage. The views of Denali were SPECTACULAR on the day we were there!!!

I would consider the customer service provided by the owner as mixed. She replied promptly when I inquired about the property initially and the booking process went smoothly. One suggestion I have is related to how she responds to customers. A few months after booking the property, I was on the website and noticed that any concerns raised by guests in their reviews were greeted with criticism and excuses. The extensive dialogue about how difficult it is to fix things and how far it was to/from Fairbanks for supplies was annoying. When we inquired about the availability of only one blow dryer (when the home is marketed for up to 13 guests or more), we received the same "scolding". We were only a party of four, so it wasn't a big deal. However, since most travelers today expect blow dryers to be available, I didn't think my question was unreasonable. What I learned in a career (in public service) is that customers don't want excuses. They want to feel heard and that their issues are important and will be addressed respectfully.

Great house in a beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at kings Deer. The house is just beautiful, with a lot of open space for a big group. We were 11 and our kids just loved to play upstairs (Legos and Dinosaurs from the house were their favourite) and outside in the bush. Beds were comfortable, even the mattresses Jessica gave us for the kids were very good. It is very close to the Denali park entrance and in a place surrounded by trees. The property was clean and kitchen was well equipped. A pity we could not stay longer!

Great Home Close to Park Entrance

  • 4 of 5

I don't understand some of the prior criticisms. This home is spectacular in design and construction. If it was in Colorado or the Cascades it would rent easily. Considering how remote Denali is and that you are over a hundred miles to the closest city, Fairbanks, this place is remarkable. Remember there are no grocery stores in fifty miles, and yet you have all the comforts of home. A modern kitchen with all the appliances one expects( including a supply of condiments), and beautiful large bedrooms and common areas. It is best for two couples where each of you has a suite of rooms, or for a large family. While I would have been unhappy if the lower level was occuppied by the owner's family, it was not while we stayed. Yes, the water is hard, but considering the remoteness of where I am that is little to complain about. It had nice showers with good hot water. Would a nigtstand have been nice, yes, but cosidering how little time you spend there, it didn't matter.

Spacious!

  • 4 of 5

Our family enjoyed our two nights at Kings Deer Lodge. It is a beautiful, nicely furnished home and there was plenty of space for everyone to spread out. It is in a secluded location but still close to the main highway. We took a fun bus tour of Denali while we were there and enjoyed a great meal at 49th State Brewing in Healy. We did not see any wildlife during our stay but we could hear nearby sled dogs. This rental was just right for our group of 11!

What a great location for a Denali visit!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 9 stayed for three nights. The location was perfect for us while we visited Denali. We were close by to the park facilities and to restaurants. But where were the bears????

The set up of the house was good - the kids took over the upper great room and were totally content - thanks for the great internet.

We used the kitchen to prepare meals and the outdoor grill as well. Would have liked some small juice size glasses for the kids and a frying pan for eggs and pancakes, otherwise kitchen was well supplied.

Lots of towels and great beds. They even pulled out extra mattresses for the kids, which was really nice. And did I mention the views...All around great stay.
