|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Crow’s Nest Cottage is a lofted, freestanding cottage that offers the quintessential ‘beach experience’ in a quiet, private location far away from the ‘frat party’ beach rentals of the area.
Start your day with coffee or tea at sunrise on the large 4’ x 6’ daybed/lounge just outside your front door. (As the day goes on, the daybed also makes an excellent place for sunbathing!) Or pop over to the bay two houses away to take a morning dip in the water or a sunrise jog along the bayside walking path. Later, make a fresh breakfast at your leisure in the fully-equipped kitchen, walk to one of the area’s delicious restaurants for lemon French toast (North Shore Café) or pulled pork & eggs (Starkey’s), or carry a light breakfast picnic over to the bay greenway for a true beach living experience!
After breakfast its time to plan out your day. One option is to head over to the sea beach just a block and a half away – the cottage includes beach chairs, towels, an umbrella, and a boogie board. (There’s also an outdoor shower to help get some of the sand off before you return to your rental home!) No matter what time of year you visit, there’s guaranteed to be at least one or two beach days during your stay – and if not, lolling on the beach is just as fun in shorts & T-shirt as it is in a bathing suit.
In addition to sunbathing on the sand and playing in the waves, Mission Beach has a number of equipment rental stores for biking along oceanfront walk, kite-boarding, surfing, zipping around on a jetski, or kayaking in the bay. Or you could also use the day to explore other attractions in San Diego, like Sea World (5 minute drive) or the Zoo (10-15 minute drive.)
In the afternoon, its time to start figuring out plans for dinner and the evening. Make sure to set aside time to relax in the sunny office nook, perfect for curling up with a good book, penning postcards to friends & family, or reading through our guide to area restaurants, bars & activities. Belmont Amusement Park a few blocks away is a popular spot for evening fun – ride the historic wooden roller coaster, try your luck at boardwalk games, or treat yourself to some cotton candy or ice cream. There are also several oceanfront restaurants with excellent food and great views of the sunset. A shaded, exclusive-use patio area at ground level offers a place to grill up some burgers and dine outdoors, and there’s also a small charcoal grill upstairs near the cottage entrance for smaller grilling jobs in connection with a dinner cooked in the kitchen.
At night, relax on the daybed with a locally brewed beer or a glass of Temecula wine… or make s’mores at a beach bonfire on the bay as you watch the Sea World fireworks (8:50 nightly, weekends only in the off-season.) Or relax in your living room on chillier nights and enjoy the electric fireplace, premium cable channels, DVD player, and board games.
How Vacation Rentals Work (for guests new to renting a private vacation home):
This is our private beach house that we open up to others when our family is not using it. In most cases we will meet you at the property at check-in to give you the keys and go over important details about your stay. In some cases, when we need to be out of town or when you are arriving late or can't predict your arrival time, we will leave the property on lockbox for you. The property is cleaned thoroughly by a professional housekeeping service in between guests, but there is no daily housekeeping service. While we are very happy to assist you in your stay and in making sure you have what you need, please understand that this is not a hotel and there is not a 24-hour concierge available to deliver toothpaste at 3 AM! However, everything you need to enjoy a turnkey experience (as if this were your own 2nd home) will be in the rental - including freshly laundered linens, towels, toilet paper, etc.
Details on the cottage:
Includes a pullout sofabed, two wicker armchairs, two additional wooden armchairs, and a wicker side table/coffee table stocked with board games. There is an electric fireplace and a TV with premium cable channels.
Full kitchen with stainless steel appliances (stove, refrigerator, microwave.) Features original 1930s tile around the sink. Kitchen includes a blender, toaster, coffeemaker, cooking utensils, dishware, glasses, wine glasses, knives, pots & pans, ovenware, spices, mixing bowls, and everything else you need to make even the most ambitious feast! (No dishwasher, sorry!)
Features a vanity with lots of counter space and places for toiletries, a tub/shower combo with rainsoak showerhead and a dual shower curtain rod (excellent for drying beach towels and bathing suits.) A linen closet holds extra towels, sheets, and toiletries.
Spacious, sunny bedroom with full bed (firm mattress with memory foam pillow-top), skylight, dresser, wardrobe, and office nook. Door between bedroom & living room is an accordion door (provides privacy and blocks light, but not sound) and the bathroom is only accessible through the bedroom, so the place is best for families traveling together. With two unrelated couples the place might feel a bit crowded.
Daybed outside front door; garage parking space; first floor private patio area with bistro set, grill, and chaise lounge.
Washer-dryer is on premises and is shared with two other units. There are restrictions on hours of use due to the washing machine being outside a bedroom window. An extra space heater is available for the bedroom for especially cold nights (only needed once or twice a year.) The climate is temperature year round; highs in the winter are in the mid-to-high sixties, with days in the seventies fairly often.
Please note this rental cottage is accessed via a set of stairs. It is free standing and not on top of or connected to any other unit, but is on the 2nd story (garage parking space occupies 1st story.)
We have been running vacation rentals on the San Diego coastline since 2007. We love meeting all the different guests who come through! Our specialty is buying and modernizing vintage beach cottages to give a really unique vacation experience to visitors to San Diego.
Jennifer purchased this cottage in 2014
We fell in love with the location of this property and also how sunny it is all the time! Houses in Mission Beach are often packed very close together and as a result don't get much natural light on all sides - but Crow's Nest is lofted and gets sun from every angle!
House was great-so cute! Prime location and perfect for 2. House was clean and cozy. Easy walk to beach and shops, short 15-20 min uber rides from other must see locations and San Diego. Would definitely rent from Jennifer again! She always replied promptly and directions for house were clear and easy even with a super late arrival time.
Cottage located very close to Mission Beach as advertised, which was important to us. Loved the neighborhood. Cottage contained everything needed for our stay. The garage was located under the cottage which was great, however should be advertised as quite small and tight to maneuver into. I suggest a very small rental car to make the garage more usable. It is barely a 1 car and located in an alley. After several tries I was able to get the car in the garage , however chose to walk several blocks to public parking to avoid an expensive scrape to our rental car. The bathtub is peeling under the tub mat. There appeared to be several mold spots on the ceiling above the tub. Bedding had some stains ; which were unpleasant. Like I said mixed review. Location for the rental cost was great., however would not return mainly due to bathroom condition.
Overall a positive experience. A couple issues came up during our stay and Jennifer handled them promptly and professionally (including sitting in the condo for hours while an unexpectedly major plumbing overhaul had to be taken care of!) I was also permitted to check in a couple hours early and had constant text contact with Jennifer about several topics over the 10 days. Wonderful location!
My only issue would be with the tidiness of the property itself compared to the provided photos. Big ticket items like fridge/ microwave/ toilet were spotless but not everything else. Stains on the carpet/furniture/pillows were unpleasant, as well as crumbs in the kitchen and grime throughout the condo. I purchased cleaning supplies at the local Albertsons and took care of enough that I felt comfortable staying at the property. I'm sure a deeper-than-normal cleaning could remedy this issue for future guests.
We stayed at this rental after our wedding. Jennifer responded quickly with any questions I had. The rental is in a central area and close to a lot of attractions.
My wife and I spent an extended weekend here last month and had a great time. The location is perfect in relation to two beaches, bars and restaurant and even Sea World. The unit itself is small but perfect for a couple and may a young child or two. The kitchen had everything we needed and the cable TV was a nice feature while winding down in the evenings.
The ONLY issue that we had with this rental was setting up the check out. The property manager seemed super concerned about getting us out in time to turn the place for the next guests, but then failed to return our calls the morning of. We had to guess the combination to the lock box (conveniently the same as the bike lock) and drop the keys and leave. We were 1/2 way back to AZ before we ever got a text from the manager.
We rented this cottage from Thursday - Sunday, it was the perfect fit and location for my wife and I along with our little dog. The place had everything we needed and could walk to most everywhere we needed around the Belmont. The parking was ideal for all SUV and Car types. The court was quiet at night and we met a couple of permanent residents that were very polite. No complaints overall - everything was as described - Rick & Crystal June 2014
