About Jeff Hornacek

A Mechanical Engineer in the Texas oil industry, I moved to Silicon Valley in the 80s to ride the computer wave. It was then that I first experienced Yosemite National Park. With frequent visits over the next 2 decades competing with my other love, skydiving, I finally sold my parachute, committed to Yosemite and started living at Yosemite Refuge in the early 2000s. While doing countless hikes all over the park, I also started perfecting my backpacking gear, leading to my co-founding a backpacking gear company from this house called Trail Designs. I hope you find as much happiness here as I have. Between myself and my neighbors Jeff and Melissa who I've asked to help with your stay, we'll work to ensure you have everything you need.

Jeff Hornacek purchased this house in 2002

Why Jeff Hornacek chose Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is quite simply the most breathtaking place on earth. Covering an area the size of Rhode Island, you will find some of the largest waterfalls in North America, the most spectacular granite monoliths in the world, Giant Sequoias which can't be found anywhere else on earth, and the list just goes on and on. With over 750 miles of trails, the opportunity to see these sites in addition to extensive wildlife (bear, deer, marmots, coyote, etc) is unparalleled. The question isn't why live in Yosemite, it's why wouldn't you live here!

What makes this house unique

Given the huge size of Yosemite, and the countless things to see and do, you want to be in the middle of it all when you wake up in the morning. Starting your day off fighting through traffic, sitting in line at the entrance station, and driving half the day from a gateway city just to get started wastes precious time and energy. Yosemite Refuge is in Yosemite West.....right in the middle of the most popular sites.....whether it's the waterfalls and huge granite of Yosemite Valley to the north, the Giant Sequoias of Mariposa Grove to the south, or the breathtaking views from Glacier Point to the east, you're perfectly positioned to explore them all. Add to it the unparalleled seclusion and privacy found at Yosemite Refuge allows you to truly get away from it all and recharge. The 2 car garage has easy access from the street, leading to 55 steps meandering down the hillside to Yosemite Refuge's private setting, providing comfortable seclusion from the rest of the community. Also, located at 6000' elevation, it's cooler than the low lying towns and valley.

Some minor issues but overall a great place to see Yosemite. 4 out of 5 stars

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I recently stayed in the Yosemite refuge home at Yosemite National Park. The home itself was charming. It was clean, with a very adequate kitchen to do all of our meal preparations. The location in the park was a plus and there were clearly efforts made by the owner to make guests comfortable including a gas fireplace and outdoor gas grill on the patio (which we did not use).

The beds in the bedroom were adequate but the air-conditioning did make a fair amount of noise in one of the bedrooms which disturbed my wife. Many of the other reviews indicated the issue with the stairs going down to the home entrance. My wife counted 58 stairs from the garage to the entrance of the house. My wife and I are both in our 60s and this was not a problem for us. It did take some effort to move the luggage up-and-down. There is a two-car garage at the street level. Be forewarned that the garage is somewhat small. We were able to fit our Santa Fe SUV in, however, I would not recommend a larger vehicle which probably would not fit. One of the bedroom fan remotes did not work, but this was not an issue since the fan could be manually turned on and off.

The location in the park was excellent. We were able to go south as well as north and west without any difficulty. The street was very quiet and there were no issues whatsoever from the neighbors. Because of the excellent location, we were able to do our sightseeing and hikes in the morning, come back to the house for lunch and rest, and then go back out later on in the afternoon without any difficulties.

Dealing with the owners was very easy and they were exceptionally responsive. Overall I would recommend this listing. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Great location!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house's proximity to Yosemite, and all the trails. You can't beat the location. After a long day of hiking, we enjoyed time on the deck. We ate all of our meals out there. The house itself was perfect for a family of 4 traveling with another couple. The two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms worked out great, and were thoughtfully appointed. We had some minor issues, and they were immediately remedied. We would definitely recommend this home.

Perfect for two couples, close proximity to Yosemite Valley and Glacier Point

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Yosemite Refuge! The cabin was nice and so comfortable and it came equipped with everything we needed for cooking (well stocked with oil, spices and some extras), bathing and sleeping. It was a perfect set-up for two couples - the bedrooms/baths nicely separated for privacy and a great living and kitchen area to enjoy our time together. Plus the location was within 30 - 40 minutes to everything (compared to 1.5 - 2 hours away if you stay in Mariposa or Oakhurst)

The wifi worked great until we used up our quota, which happened rather quickly with 4 people and 4 cell phones, but was all we needed to keep in touch with family.

The bottle of wine was awesome - we brought it with us one day and enjoyed it on Tenaya Lake's Beach.

We were worried about getting our mini-van in the garage but it ended up fitting perfectly.

We were here in late June and found the mosquitoes relentless, not just at the cabin but at the park, so bring a good bug spray especially if you plan to enjoy time on the deck (or hiking!).

We highly recommend Yosemite Refuge!!

Wonderful, clean, comfortable home - fully stocked and perfect place to stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and 2 kids stayed here for 4 nights and it was exactly what we needed. It was clean and had every convenience we could want. Everywhere I looked, I was impressed with the care and thought put into the house. There were ice cube trays already filled and frozen in the freezer, different size storage bags for packing snacks, extra towels for the kitchen and bath, and a bottle of wine waiting for us. :) The location in Yosemite West was perfect, and we would highly recommend this house to others. If we find ourselves visiting Yosemite again, we will definitely try to stay here!

Perfect Location Inside Yosemite National Park

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 nights in early June at Yosemite Refuge. It was perfect for our group of 4 (2 couples). We enjoyed eating our dinners on the deck. We had stopped at a Walmart in Fresno to purchase food since there are no grocery stores close by. After hiking and viewing the sights in the park we came back to relax and watch movies. There is a large selection. The home is very comfortable and had everything we needed. We had a good cardio workout each morning walking up the 55 steps to the garage. The house is located just one mile from the entrance to Glacier Point Road (a must see with incredible views) and a 30 minute drive to Yosemite Valley. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us. We highly recommend staying here.
