About the property

Sleeps up to eight in four bedrooms.

Warm and sunlit house overlooking sailboats in the Harraseeket harbor. A cozy 4 bedroom home surrounded by fruit trees, roses and blueberries, and also includes a small greenhouse and tree house.

If you like a quiet and peaceful setting, near unlimited adventures in all directions, this is the place for you.

It is situated on an acre of land with 200 feet of frontage, in a small and quiet neighborhood. There is no swimming here, but we are just a short drive from magnificent beaches a state parks. Were's also just two miles from Freeport's village area and L.L. Bean, one mile from a lobster pound where you can order lobster dinners ready for pickup in a half hour and fifteen minutes from one of America's great little cities, Portland, where you'll find an extraordinary array of restaurants and arts, shopping, boat trips and excursions.

We are a three hour drive up the coast from Acadia National Park, which is the most-visited park east of the Mississippi River. To the west are mountains and lakes. The coastline is full of long peninsulas that seem captured in time, with many small towns and special places.

The house has high-speed internet connections and a small theater room with cable television shown on a projection screen (10 foot screen). It also has an advanced digital piano and wireless network.

About Alan

My wife and I are both leaders of organizations in Maine, and I run a consulting business in communications. We are involved in promoting economic growth, transportation planning, environmental protection and climate change adaption. We have a ten-year old son.

Alan purchased this house in 1998

Why Alan chose Portland - Casco Bay Area

If you're looking for a place that is quiet and comfortable, this is the place. This is not a beachfront house, but it has nice views of the sailboats in the summer and marvelous sunrises. It is also not a summer house. It's our year-round home.

What makes this house unique

Maine. Summer. Coast. What more is there?

House is not described adequately.

  • 2 of 5

We have used VRBO for 6 years now. I have never had to write a negative review, however potential renters must be made aware that this is a full time owners house. There are not 3 queen beds as listed. 2 queens, 1 double (FUTON), & a child's twin bed would be more factual. The best way to describe your stay is like visiting for a weekend at a friend or relative's home without them being there... The lower level is the finished basement with a walk out. The house has no ceiling fans or air-conditioning. You are provided with a box & small fan. Staying the end of July when we did was a mistake.. Upstairs on the main floor reached 85 degrees... with no blinds or shades for the windows or doors. If it rains or becomes stormy ( which it did for 3-4 days of our stay) it will become oppressive. My wife had an asthma attack because of this. The upstairs bathroom ( no picture provided) looks original to the house with no lock on the door. The toilet seat cracked the last day of our stay and Alan charged $30.00 to replace, deducted from deposit.

The restrictions of the house are many, some stated and some not. You are only given this when you pay in full.

The idea of renting a house for a week is to be able to come & go, cook, hang out, and enjoy your stay. This rental was a big mistake.

Downstairs had a mildew odor. To run the dehumidifier was useless because you needed to have the windows open for air circulation... We were 4 senior citizens along with 2 young adults and a teenager who stayed here. 2 adults had to sleep on couches. The stairs leading to the lower level were not easy to use.

The refrigerator was filled with the owners food ( only 1 shelf is made available for your cold food storage) Plan on making a lot of trips to the supermarket... The oven was LOCKED. You could only use the stove top for cooking & one side did not work on the deck grill.

We tried to contact the owners about this to discover the landline phones were DISCONNECTED. Being in the location that the house is, there is poor or no cellphone service depending your carrier. There are no smoke detectors at all in the house. All the owners belongings are everywhere & no closet space or drawer space is provided ( a luggage rack is). You are offered to use the garden vegetables, however it is inaccessible.

I am sorry for writing this bad review but VRBO does not acknowledge your complaint. What are their rental standards? I don't blame the owners... but VRBO

Owner's Response: We regret that it rained while these guests were here, and that they had to spend most of their time indoors. There's never anything pleasant about that. We also regret that anyone did not have a great time at our house. We have had many guests here, as both renters and home exchangers. This is the first negative response we've ever had and these were the first problem guests we've had. During their stay, they broke things and then left us a rude note blaming us for it. They called us repeatedly with one issue after another. They ran the oven cleaning cycle, in the summer heat, which not only generates a day of heat in the house but also locks the oven. It cost us nearly $300 to fix that problem. We ended up only charging them for half of the cost of a broken toilet seat, which we thought was more than fair. They agreed, at the time, and then submitted this review. How anyone breaks a toilet seat, I do not know. We encourage people to carefully read the information we have listed. We try to make clear that this is our personal home, which is why we only rent it for a few weeks each summer. It is not a vacation bare rental or a second home with meager furnishings. It is also clear that we don't have air conditioning, mostly because we live on the ocean which has constant breezes in the summer. The lower floor is built into a slope and is always 10-20 degrees cooler than the upstairs. We also encourage guests, if it becomes to warm, to open the skylights in the upper floor. That 'drafts' or pulls cool air from the downstairs and cools the house as well as sitting on a deck. It is never hot in the house when it rains, in our experience, unless all the windows are closed. In fact, it's usually too cool during rainy weather. For people accustomed to air conditioners in their houses, this is probably not the best place for you. Try one of the big condos hotels. We respect that some people might want air conditioning, but we've never felt the need.. This is Maine. It's the place where people have visited for a hundred years to get natural air conditioning. As to the bed claim, that's simply false. All beds are queen size except for the single bed in our son's room. Two are fixed beds and one is a foldout couch. We have now replaced foldout queen with a full queen, and the foldout is still available for use.. Most people have had a wonderful time here. Not all, of course. But we try to ensure that people have a great time when they're here.

Hidden gem on quiet street in South Freeport!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at this house in South Freeport. A very quiet street looking out on to the tidal river leading to the bay.
