overall we were very impressed with the accommodations, with the Maguires very special people, a little hic cup, the bed in the second bedroom, queen mattress on a double box spring. My son in law kept rolling off the bed.

All in all great vacation. We were sad in leaving this haven of tranquility.

Owner's Response: Some days things get messed up - The new box spring & mattress arrived from Sears just before you checked in, the box spring was damaged, so our quick thinking cleaning crew refused the new box spring and made the bed up using the new mattress & older box spring Not wanting to bother our guests they waited until your check out day to install the new box spring. So when you arrive again next year we will do something special for you. "Thanks for bringing this to our attention," Best regards, The Maguires

Needs work or (like other older, superficially renovated houses) a more forth-right description

  • 1 of 5

My wife & I were excited to honeymoon here. I've used VRBO before-- this is my first bad & genuinely odd experience. The host seems sweet but pictures/description do not currently match the property (perhaps they're older or have been generously edited?). The night we arrived, host contacted us several times & (oddly enough) indicated he'd drop by during our visit; there were previously undisclosed out-buildings & another residence nearby, all with direct lines of sight into the cottage (which lacks curtains in bathrooms & bedrooms). You feel "on display," are literally (at times) being watched, could be "dropped in on" at any time, & will necessarily be observed coming & going by the owner (who lives @ start of no-outlet road that ends @ cottage). There was significant water damage--- & related mold smell-- in the left bedroom, & the wall above the bed was visibly bashed. The ceiling in the right bedroom also showed signs of water damage (bulging, staining, crumbling), & had visible knob & tube wiring-- not unusual in older homes but indicates cottage is not "up to code" or insured for rental purposes. There was some leaning &, with strong gusts, swaying in the wind. There were dead bugs, cobwebs, dirt/dust/debris from previous guests (q-tips, hair, etc.) in most rooms; visible brown stains on living-room curtains; the sliding screen door was broken, with tape over large rips; peeling paint in the bathroom (over sink) & in all outdoor areas; the 2nd & 1st floor deck areas were rusting/peeling & in general disrepair (furniture tossed about). Shocked, we reviewed the guestbook & found it very odd, more like a prolonged advertisement, with atypical phrases-- that happened to sound exactly like the host --repeated throughout (e.g., "slice of heaven"). My wife's allergies & migraines were immediately triggered-- we arrived early Weds, changed clothes, & found new accommodations by daybreak. My wife talked with the host @ his home/gallery on Weds., was urged to try another of his properties: we reviewed & could tell from photos it'd pose similar problems (health-wise) as the cottage. We gave the key back & inquired about a partial refund (e.g., Sat. & Sun. only) of our 6 night reservation. We noted we had pics of the issues. The host was initially apologetic but subsequently (& repeatedly) ignored requests for partial refund, hasn't responded to email since Nov 4th. There're great places w/ great views (& prices) nearby-- better stay there, as we did.

A spectacular corner of the world viewed from a homey cottage

  • 5 of 5

Everything about Whaleback Cottage is perfect. The cottage itself is charming from the antique chandelier to the living room surrounded with great views of the oceanfront to the nearby pond filled with water lilies.

There are paths to explore, decks to gather on and a fire pit to sit around at night.

The kitchen is well supplied, and the bedrooms are charming.

And, of course, there is the ocean and many ways to explore the magnificent rock formations along the ocean front.

A wonderful retreat.

Spectacular view. Warm and generous host. Whales!

  • 5 of 5

Visiting Nova Scotia for the first time, Whalesback was just what I had hoped to experience and more. Hearing the crashing waves, seeing whales and hiking to Peggys Cove are a few highlights. Tom was wonderful and helped us navigate the area. Thank you.

Breathtaking location

  • 4 of 5

The Whalesback Cottage is a beautiful place on the ocean. It was a good location as we did some day trips to Halifax and Lunenburg with no problem.

I would recommend the stay!
