This was one of our favorite homes that we have rented through VRBO. Your hosts Tom and Donna just down the road see to your every need and have so many suggestions and stories for your visit. The windows in the living room give you views of the Atlantic from three sides. The area is filled with cute towns, Peggy's Cove, Lunnenburg, and the beautiful Mahone Bay. You must eat in Oh My Cod! In Mahone Bay. Esther's seafood chowder is delicious as is everything we tried. You will love this house and the area.

Location, location, location.

You cannot beat the location of Whalesback Cottage. The surroundings, the privacy, the areas to explore are outstanding. The cottage itself is in need of a little bit of TLC, stained wallpaper, window screens duct taped. You have to keep in mind, it is a cottage. The view and location really do help to balance out the few flaws. The room in the pictures with the 3 windows facing the ocean is exactly as seen in the picture (cushion covers on all 3 day beds are very stained, grab some large clean towels upstairs to lay on each one).

Our stay started out a little rough, housekeeping issues that were dealt with the next day. Thomas, who takes care of the cottage, did everything in his power to deal with the problems as quickly as possible. We had just come from an absolutely pristine, sparkling clean beach house in PEI (which was actually cheaper than Whalesback) so our expectations were high, it was a bit of a let-down. As mentioned, Thomas did his best to fix things. We left some suggestions regarding how to make the cottage more comfortable, and accommodating for future tenants. The 2 bdrms are both upstairs (slightly steep stairs) not conducive for people that have a difficult time climbing stairs. Both beds are low to the floor, one bdrm is a box spring and mattress on the floor and the other is a mattress on some sort of very low bed frame. (Thomas called me after and said that he would be taking my suggestions of raising the beds in the future). There were no lamps to read by in the bdrms or living room. Actually no table lamps at all. A note or sign needs to be put up warning tenants, "Do not leave any food, whatsoever, out. Put bread, chips, etc. away in refrigerator or microwave". The lobster untensils were missing, Thomas said that maybe the last tenant took them and he would be replacing them immediately. Personally, I believe all of these things should be looked into prior to the next tenant arriving.

The location and view really are amazing and we enjoyed exploring down on the rocks out front. I would definitely return to Whaleback Cottage and recommend it, if the beds are raised and lamps brought in, & housekeeping issues dealt with. Again, Thomas did his very best to accommodate us, was available to try to help deal with the problems we encountered.

This review wasn't written with the intent to dissuade travelers, it is an amazing location. I'm sure Thomas has already taken care of the few problems

Owner's Response: As this was the start of the rental season things did happen that are not normal.. The country mouse was immediately asked to leave by a professional firm We agree re /cushion covers & they are presently being replaced, one bed is being replaced . The master bedroom bed is a custom hand crafted & low by design "most guests say they would like to buy it" or one like it. Whaleback Cottage is the oldest house in the area thus the step stairs. but with substantial handrails it really adds to the charm. This is really the first criticism we have received. Any comments that we receive are appreciated & will make Whaleback Cottage even a better place to stay.

A private, peaceful and utterly magical retreat.

  • 5 of 5

In the early planning stages of our trip to Nova Scotia, my mother, sister-in-law and I agreed on one thing: this white cottage with the yellow door. Intrigued by its proximity to Peggy's Cove and swayed by romantic visions of rock outcroppings and passing lobster boats, we planned the rest of our journey around a three-day rental of Whalesback Cottage. The house more than lived up to our expectations. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is well stocked and the views are divine. Three chaises in the windowed sitting room offered each of us a vantage of the sea. It's a perfect spot for morning coffee and evening wine. We spent a bit of time each day exploring the trails into the Preserve and never tired of the changing views, the reflection of sky in watery pools, the sound of the surf. At night, the "peepers" -- local frogs -- sang us to sleep. Meeting our hosts, Tom and Donna Maguire, was a delight. Tom, a born raconteur, regaled us with stories of the community. Donna (whose wonderful paintings are on display at the Rogues Gallery) offered a steady gaze, dry wit and numerous recommendations for dining and shopping in Mahone Bay. (Don't miss a meal at "Oh, My Cod!") Their generosity, good humor and kindness set a tone for the rest of our journey. I am already imagining a return to Whalesback Cottage. It's an ideal place to escape the hustle, reconnect with nature and savor the company of friends and family.

Magnificent Maritime setting

  • 5 of 5

Whalesback provides an ideal home base to explore the south shore. We stayed for 3 nights with our adult daughter, so having 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths and a kitchen was perfect for our family. We stayed in mid April, which meant that many stores and restaurants nearby were either not yet open for the season or on reduced hours. However, we were able to find lovely places to eat in Lunenburg, Chester & Wolfville and stocked up on groceries for breakfasts at Whalesback.

The vistas from the daybeds in the main sitting area are magnificent. Every morning we watched fishing boats working right in front of the cottage and at night we had a panoramic view of the sun setting. We wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

Perfect seaside getaway

  • 5 of 5

This rustic cottage close to Peggy's Cove has a large plot of land and is adjacent to a long stretch of protected coast stretching almost to Peggy's cove. We spent a few days just staring out the windows at the waves and lobster boats and walking along the water. Absolutely beautiful spot. The cottage was comfortable and Tom (manager) was extremely helpful with everything we needed during our stay.

Relaxing December Stay at Whalesback Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We spent three laid back days here in early December, enjoying magnificent views of sunsets, listening to the ocean and taking short hikes along the shoreline. The cottage was warm, inviting and comfortable. Our hosts were helpful and always available - we had a wonderful spread of fruit and wine waiting for us when we got there, and they were available any time we wanted to talk about sightseeing, food, etc.

Amazing location, excellent service, perfect for us to get away and relax - We are already looking forward to our next stay!
