The Asylum Inn is located along the beautiful lakeshore of South Haven, Michigan. Just four lovely blocks to the Lake Michigan beach. This three-story brick building was once a private hospital in the 1930's, founded by the Penoyer family. Today, after a full restoration in 2001, this historic building has been transformed into a gorgeous Inn with three master suites and lots of classic charm. The Inn is a place to relax and regain your thoughts, or to have an adventure with your family! We can accommodate 14-16 guest comfortably. Plus we offer a unique place for private events and family gatherings. A new Pavilion and Gazebo for outdoor events. Each flat can be rented separately, or opened up to rent the full mansion. All three flats have fully-equipped kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms, with satellite TV and WiFi. Each flat also offers a private deck and a common courtyard with gas grill and picnic tables; a perfect gathering place for family and friends.
Our new Pavilion and Gazebo will be perfect for hosting private events, such as bridal parties, birthday parties, holiday gatherings and much more! Contact Tina for more details.
Lake Michigan is only steps away from the Inn, offering access to all the local nature and culture this beautiful beach town has to offer, such as fishing opportunities, gorgeous beaches, biking trails, natural sand dunes, scuba diving, and even sailboat rides on The Friend's Goodwill, who makes her home in the nearby harbor and offers breathtaking sunset cruises as well as daytime adventures. In addition to the natural beauty and culture, South Haven has many wonderful restaurants to choose from, all conveniently located in the downtown area. For some fresh seafood, try Captain Nemo's, The Thirsty Perch, or Admiral Jack's, or the ever-popular Clementines for some rustic charm. For some adventurous fun, try one of the local wine tours, beautiful golf courses, or one of our private clubs, such as the Legion, VFW, Elks, Moose or the South Haven Yacht Club. Memories in the making await you!

We are Mark and Tina Goodrich, South Haven locals with five lovely children. When the Asylum Inn was first founded in 2003, it was in disrepair and needed a lot of TLC. Our family together worked on restoring the building until it became what it is today. We love to share the Inn with our family and friends, whether it's for hosting parties and gatherings, or simply share with our children and their family. It's updated with modern amenities for today's millennials.
Tina Goodrich purchased this estate in 2001
South Haven is a beautiful place to live and vacation. The locals are very friendly, the lake is breath taking, and there is always something to do. We know you'll absolutely love it, because we do! This beautiful brick building is so full of charm and character, and the convenience of location makes it that much better! Plus it's full of character and wisdom. The building is a solid brick building. 4 levels from the basement to the 3rd flat. Beautiful hard wood floors. Stunning wood throughout the building. When we bought it in 2001. She was painted white from the hospital in the 1930's. We stripped everything and kept it original. The wood came to life. It's been a experience. The "Asylum" came to mind quite easy. We love the name and have fun with it.
The Asylum Inn is one of the few properties that accommodates up to 16 comfortably... of your family & friends. You can choose to stay together, or have your own separate suites. The Inn is close enough to Lake Michigan to enjoy all the festivals and local culture, yet far enough away for privacy and quiet time. Enjoy the new Pavilion and Gazebo. It's a great addition at The Asylum Inn for private events.
14 women. Laughter. Friendship. Catching up. Board games. Wine. Ice skating. Window shopping. And most importantly - time spent together. Perfect end to a year filled with happiness/sadness, laughter/tears, successes/challenges and change. Thank you! The home was perfect for us :)
What a fabulous place for a ladies weekend! We rented all 3 floors and were not disappointed. Having the kitchens available for breakfasts was time saving. At dinner we walked downtown to several restaurants - Casa is great Mexican and the Tavern was perfect for burgers and comedy night. The Asylum's location was ideal for our large group to split up for ice cream or shop after the day's paddle.
Not one of the 13 women were disappointed with the Asylum... beds were comfortable and the place is very well kept. The kayaking was wonderful on both Lake Michigan and the river. Looking forward to a return trip!

My large family and I had a great weekend at the Asylum. There was plenty of space for all of us. Plenty of washrooms and bedrooms. It is also at a great location to the lake and the downtown South Haven. Everything was within walking distance, which was a huge plus. The inn was very clean, except for our bed sheets which had a few stains on them and under the top floor couch there was a spilled stain. We moved the couch to give the babies more space to crawl around. However, I contacted Tina and she quickly responded with the fact that there were more sheets in the basement, I never mentioned the stain under the couch. I gave the rating of 4 stars because of the sheets and the stain under the couch. Other than that, fabulous weekend and great communication. I would stay here again.
Very nice, roomy place! Great location, easy to walk to downtown South Haven and the water. We enjoyed out stay!
What a perfectly, wonderful week! Our family traveled from five states to spend a week together in beautiful South Haven. We could not have chosen a better home to rent for our week together. We arrived on the Friday of the Blueberry Festival. The inn was spotless, comfortable and had everything we needed. We totally enjoyed the gazebo, new pavillion and BBQ grill. We were a large group but were able to share all of our meals together at the big table in the pavillion. The beds were extremely comfortable and we had plenty of clean linens for the week. There were two washers and dryers as well as a pack n play and high chair for our little one. Wow, this home had it all! A one block walk took us to great restaurants and bars, ice cream and lots of unique shops. We particularly enjoyed the beautiful marina and the riverfront main stage concerts. The beach was an easy walk or a quick drive of a few blocks and we spent several afternoons there. One day we rented a pontoon boat in nearby Saugatauck and enjoyed the riverfront for the afternoon. We just can't say enough about The Asylum Inn. Tina answered every question and was so easy to reach at all times. Even The Blueberry Festival Parade came right by our front door and all we had to do was take our lawn chairs out to the curb and we had a front row seat. Overall, just an excellent place to stay and we will be back for sure.
Great for our large family gathering of 15 people. House was very clean and sheets, towels, dishes, etc. were all like new. Location was perfect, easy to walk to everything in town and beach. The compromise you make for a large group is that you don't have an indoor gathering space sized for all 15, however, you do have the benefit of more privacy and multiple family room areas. One night we cooked out on the grill and emjoyed our evening meal together under the new pavillion. Everyone enjoyed their stay at the house and in the area. The owner was very responsive when we called at check in/check out and when we had a WIFI password question. I would recommend this house to others.
Walking distance to most South Haven attractions!!
