Overview

About the property

This antique country farmhouse is near the Thomaston town center offering a country setting with town amenities. A short drive to summer activities and festivals in the Rockland, Camden area. One and a half hours from Portland or Bangor. Where the mountains meet the sea, take pleasure in the nearby beaches, parks, lobsters, light houses, lakes, golf, skiing in winter. Many scenic and historical sites for day trips. An hour to Bowdoin or Colby colleges.

The home has 3,075 feet of tidal frontage on the Oyster River. There are three bedrooms and a bath, one double bed first floor, two single beds in rooms upstairs. Other bed arrangements can be made for longer stays if needed. It has a washer dryer, and all bedding etc. is included. Enjoy the mowed walking trails through 50 acres of hay fields. If lucky you may, toward dusk, spot an albino deer in a field by the pine woods. Lots of other animal and birds to see.

Pet and child friendly. Owned by artists living in the pumpkin colored farm house next door. A private painting lesson can also be arranged or ask for a tour of the barn and studio.

Feel free to pick the raspberries when in season and enjoy the gardens. A nice collection of games and reading material for a rainy day, also wifi and cable television.

Take a walk to the small cabin in the back field. Sit by a campfire in the evening. Listen to the peepers and watch fireflies sparkle in summer evenings.

Perfect!

We had an absolutely perfect stay! Everything was provided and then some. It’s a stunning property, which we loved roaming with our dog. We couldn’t ask for more and can’t wait to come back!

This home BECAME our vacation...

  • 5 of 5

You know you’ve picked the right vacation accommodations when your family doesn’t want to leave. And I don’t just mean they didn’t want to leave when this leg of our trip was over, they didn’t even want to leave to go sightseeing!

This stay marked the first time our family had ever tried a vacation rental such as VRBO or Airbnb, and our stay here was perfect. The Van Campens were very gracious hosts and the two-story, centuries-old home was nothing short of lovely and an incredible overall value. The fridge was stocked with eggs, toast, and drinks and the kitchen had everything we needed for our boys to cook their own breakfasts in the morning. Oh, and Moxie! We got to try this Maine staple drink here for the first time, and we loved it! It’s all we wanted to drink the rest of the time we were in Maine.

During the daylight hours our boys (ages 15, 12, and 10) just wanted to wander around the expansive property, and especially down to the river. The Van Campens had a kayak and a canoe that they allowed us to take out on the river for as long as we wanted. This became a highlight of the trip for our kids! We didn’t find the time, but they also had a gorgeous badminton court that beckoned to us. And we spent a lot of time just strolling around their 50 acre estate, taking many photos. There’s so much history here! If you’re interested and you get the chance, ask Tim about the trolley that ran along the property and the dairy farm that once operated here. And make sure you check out the Van Campens art! It’s all over the house, so you won’t miss it, but there’s even more in the barn if they get a chance to take you in there.

But back to the house, it just couldn’t get any better. Four bedrooms gave us lots of space to stretch out. We got caught up on our vacation laundry with the machines that were in the basement. And we were tempted to use the outside fireplace, but never got around to it. Everything was so clean and tidy that we felt bad “living” in it, so on our last morning there we tried to clean things back up a bit.

As I reflect back on our experience at this home, I guess that’s what strikes me the most, I never felt like I was staying at rented accommodations, I felt like I was staying with friends. The Van Campens set a pretty high bar for our first experience with a vacation rental. The way I feel right now, I doubt we’ll ever have another experience as good as this one. :-)

Restful

  • 5 of 5

If you need to take some time away and get out in restful natural setting this is an ideal spot. The beauty of the wild flowers envelops you as you walk mown paths to the river's edge accompanied by songbirds as they flit over the spacious fields.

The home was a delightfully furnished , cheerful place ideal for a family. There were several helpful items stocked in the frig and spices and kitchen ware helpful to us as we cooked for ourselves a few times during our stay. A warm greeting and lovely bouquet of flowers were much appreciated and a great way to to begin our time in Thomaston...Just days from returning home I have recommended it a few times already!

wonderful

Beautiful, charming, peaceful house and property. Generous hosts who go above and beyond, with art on the walls and food in the fridge. House is immaculate, while still allowing dogs - a great find!

A warm and cozy winter retreat with access to winter activities just outside the front door!

  • 5 of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this charming 1820's New England cape. The house offers plenty of room, comfortably accommodating additional family members for several days, and the snow covered farm provided plenty of outdoor entertainment for all. I'm in complete agreement with previous reviews that the Van Campens are wonderful, welcoming hosts. I look forward to visiting again to experience this beautiful retreat in spring, summer, and fall.
