These delightful French properties are peacefully situated at the foot of the Black Mountains, in a beautiful rural setting with open country views, yet only five minutes from all amenities, and lots of tourist activities. Whether you are sitting by the pond watching the fish and frogs, or relaxing under a shady tree with a good book, there is an abundance of space for everyone to spread out and roam freely.
SITUATION - : The property is situated on a quiet lane which forms part of the famous pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella. With very little traffic, it is safe, peaceful and ideal for a walk or a morning jog past fields of sunflowers, vines and grazing cattle with their baby calves.
From your window you can see a wealth of wildlife such as red squirrels, hares and dozens of species of birds, including egrets, owls, kestrels, woodpeckers, kingfishers and hoopoes. Children love to feed the fish in the pond and see and hear the big green frogs.
During the warm evenings you can watch the bats accompanied by the sounds of the crickets and nightingales.
The Lauragais area is farming country and the home of the famous blue dye woad. There is a happy atmosphere about the place, in unison with its welcoming architecture – picturesque hilltop villages, lively small market towns, ancient stone farm buildings and dovecotes, all set in a rolling countryside of gentle hills, fields of sunflowers and waving corn.
Our local market is listed as one of the best in France, but within an hour’s drive you can find a different market for every day of the week. You can’t help but work up an appetite as you stroll round the colourful stalls with their beautiful displays of delicious local produce.
Every Sunday sees a choice of flea markets in the surrounding villages where the locals empty their attics of unwanted items.
Bars, cafes, bistros, brasseries, pizzerias, and restaurants - within a short drive, there is a large choice of places to eat. On the terraces of small restaurants or in grand establishments awarded Michelin stars, you can enjoy delicious characteristic specialities that reflect local produce - foie gras, duck, charcuterie and the famous cassoulet, all accompanied by excellent local wines.
Wine dominates the Languedoc region and has been produced here for more than 2000 years. Well known areas such as Minervois, Corbieres, Fitou and St Chinean.
As you drive around the Languedoc, you will see numerous signs reading 'dégustation' which means you can stop and taste wines, and if you like what you taste you buy direct from the producer, sometimes at a significant discount.
White wine enthusiasts can gather in Gaillac as this lovely small town in the Tarn boasts a dry, fruity white AOC wine.
The Smiths are English from the Maidenhead area. We are Lynne & Robin and grandson ( 6yrs) Tommie. We come from a travel industry background. We moved here to enjoy the sunshine and the peace and quiet of the countryside. Tommie attends the local school and speaks pretty good French already, whilst his Grandpa is still trying to catch up! Lynne speaks good French.
Lynne A Smith purchased this farmhouse in 2013
We bought this property because it had been superbly renovated by the previous owners - which left us nothing to do except keep up to their standards. We had no previous knowledge of the area but have definitely fallen in love with it. Calm, peaceful countryside but with so much to see and do. So many gorgeous little villages still to explore and one of the best markets in France in the nearby town.

Back to rainy London, we (family of 2 adults, 3 kids of 9, 6 and 4) already miss our perfect (summer) holiday in the Lauragais. The other reviewers below already mentioned the high standards of the property (from the house interior to the pool, grounds, covered games section, etc), as well as the perfect location to exercise body and brain: close to quite a few beautiful and historical French towns (the closest being Soreze and Revel, but Albi and Carvcassone within a 1 hour car ride), but it also very near family-friendly riding facilities and water sports (10 minutes away in the Lac St Ferreol) and close to Toulouse (where families can spend some time on the Space Center). We are already trying to figure out when can we return and meet again our perfect hosts Lynne and Robin.
Our family holiday at The Stables 19-26 July 2014 was the PERFECT choice. The accommodation proved to be 'home from home' comfort with a very well equipped kitchen, really comfortable beds and extremely clean in all areas. Plenty on offer in the grounds but an essential, well maintained pool with lots of sun loungers. Lots to see in the nearby interesting villages, including lakeside. I had a painting lesson from a (patient) local watercolour artist! We will return in the summer season but out of season will tempt us back to visit the skiing area...then back to the log burner in that lovely lounge! The coast is a great day out and so was our visit to Albi. Can't thank the owners enough....we certainly made the right choice.
We have just returned from two fantastic weeks in the Lauragais. The house was perfect for us as a family (2 adults, 3 kids, aged 10,8,8). It is beautifully and thoughtfully renovated, well decorated and equipped. The pictures don't do it justice! The outdoor covered area was superb, making outdoor eating/living very easy. It was also very private and not overlooked. The swimming pool area was of very high quality and again we were impressed by the thoughtfulness of the design of the shaded area, including poolside fridge. Everything was very clean. The gardens are large and very well kept, it was beautiful to look out on as well as large enough for our kids to roam and play in. The covered area for games was great for when the sun was too hot, although would also be good for wet weather too. The owners, Steph and Jules, were very welcoming and quick to help with any issues or questions we had.
The area is rural France although the nearest town is only 5 mins away by car and has all the amenities you need. It also has a fantastic market on a Saturday morning. Lac St Ferriol is also a very short drive away and we spent two wonderful mornings playing/swimming in the water there, there are water sports as well if you want that. Carcassonne is only 40 minutes away, busy and touristy but well worth a visit for its Disney inspiring turrets!
This is a superb place to stay, we are keen to return and would highly recommend it.
Having read some of the other reviews of this property, it's clear that everyone finds it an exceptional place to stay. We had a week in the Lauragais in August 2012 and concur with the other gushing reviews. It's really all about quality and attitude. The owners Stephanie and Jules haven't stinted on the furnishings or on the decor and insist that the place is at its best for every visitor. The space available is excellent with a large well-equipped kitchen and extensive living areas both inside and outside the gite with the covered, shaded area just outside the front door being a lovely place to relax on an evening. The grounds and pool were much more than we had expected and the extras of fridge, toilet and hot/cold shower by the pool were much appreciated.
Our family had the most amazing stay at the Farmhouse - indeed a holiday to remember! We had no idea when we booked just how perfect a place it would be to relax for 2 weeks - the accommodation is fantastic, the grounds are so beautiful and interesting and Steph and Jules are truly fabulous hosts.
The pool area is just perfect and the protected, undercover space meant we could relax there for hours with our newborn without worrying about the heat. The pond provided hours of entertainment for our toddler - the fish were very well fed during our stay!
We had no idea how much there was to explore in the region and La Terrasse is the perfect base. We never ran out of things to do and we just can't wait to return!
We really enjoyed our week's stay at La Terrasse. The description on the site if anything underestimates the charms of this rural retreat. The farmhouse has every convenience you could wish for and has been tastefully restored. The swimming pool is great and there is even a large, natural pond for peaceful contemplation. The area has plenty to offer, from the relatively undiscovered villages and historic bastides of the Lauragais to the more well-known attractions of Carcassonne and Toulouse. We would certainly recommend this property, not least for the extremely helpful and welcoming hosts and their relaxed, friendly approach. This is definitely one to revisit!
